Something for everyone! Directions - Access to Quarriers Village from Bridge of Weir via Torr Rd or from A761 Bridge of Weir-Kilmacolm Road. Craigends Avenue is off Torr Road and will be signposted on the day. Access also from B786 Lochwinnoch to Kilmacolm, follow signs to Quarriers Village. Society This month the Society welcomed David Menzies formerly Assistant Curator, Glasgow Botanic Gardens. David’s topic was “A Plantsman in Costa Rica”. This country is located between Nicaragua and Panama and similar in size to Scotland - but that’s where the similarity ends! Growing in Costa Rica’s tropical climate are 1500 native Orchids. The forest floors are dense with plants, such as Tree Ferns and Bamboo; the Orchids grow up tree trunks, along with Ferns, Lichens and Mosses. Climbers we recognise as indoor plants such as Petrea volubilis and Passion Flower break through the tree canopy and, in sunnier spots, Bromeliads, Busy Lizzies, Begonias and Dahlias may be seen. To make the most of this trip of discovery, David took the “Skywalks” through the trees. These are lengthy, suspended walkways which stretch across ravines and valleys. A cool nerve is required but the sights from above the tree canopies are stunning. Another form of transport for the eco-tourist is the “Aerial Tramway” with cable cars which glide silently through the forests. As it is so quiet, this is the best way to see the wonderful bird life. Farming is a way of life in Costa Rica with the verdant slopes being cleared for dairy cattle, Duchal, Kilmacolm, PA13 4RS Gardens Open on Sunday 14 June from 2pm - 5pm. The volcanic ash on the slopes of Mt Irazu is so fertile and mineral-rich, farmers work the soil, despite their proximity to the dormant volcano. There has been no eruption since the day in 1963 when President Kennedy visited the Island but the potential is there. On Costa Rica there are numerous botanic gardens including the Lankester Botanical Garden established in 1917 by an English coffee grower, Charles Lankester West who had a passion for Orchids. The Wilson Botanical Garden is a must for photographers being home to a mammoth collection of palms, as well as diverse plantings of beautiful tropical and subtropical ornamentals and rare and endangered plants from Costa Rica. The five acre garden of Bali Rica is well worth a trip, if only to arrive by sea and step on to a beach fringed with palm trees. The coconuts are washed into the Pacific and taken to other islands in the Caribbean. The garden is being landscaped by the owners, Mac and Sharon McIver who have settled at Bali Rica from America. This is a new, evolving botanical garden planted with indigenous plants and trees, including fragrant Ylang Ylang and Mango and mighty stands of Bamboo. At ground level there are Heliconias, Orchids and Ginger and up in the trees a colourful array of Toucans, scarlet Macaws, Parrots and Hummingbirds. Meanwhile, back on the Costa del Clyde, we gardeners wait for the Jet Stream to move north and the cool, damp weather to leave us so that our own gardens can progress. The Society plans an outing to Ardarden on Saturday 20th June and any member who wishes transport should contact one of the Committee if they would like a lift. Meanwhile, good gardening!

Then put on a dazzling display of the hardy perennial Anemone Japonica, flowering from August right through to late October with masses of blooms in various colours [illustrated.] Plant in well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Mulch around plants each year, and be prepared to lift and divide clumps if they spread beyond their bounds. Divide plants March/April. Konigan Charlotte previously known as ‘Queen Charlotte’, is a handsome variety of Japanese anemone brightening up the autumn garden with its soft pink, semi-double flowers which have dark purple shading on the reverse. RSPB We have been having a superb springtime here at RSPB Lochwinnoch! The reserve is looking gloriously fresh and green, wild flowers are blooming and, with lots of exciting wildlife to see, it is the perfect time to pop down and explore the reserve! Some of our recent wildlife highlights have included a pair of garganey which has spent the last several weeks enjoying the ponds and channels on the Aird Meadow, as well as repeated sightings of osprey and otters on the reserve – how wonderful! Moving into summer time there is even more wildlife to be discovered, and there will be an excellent opportunity to do so as part of our summer Bioblitz! Whether you’re interested in enjoying the natural world as a family, or enthusiastic to find out more about specific wildlife, we’ll have something for you! As well as encouraging everyone to have a go at recording the wildlife they see (no experience necessary!), we will be holding walks throughout the day, with mammals at 9am and bats at 9pm, as well as a variety of other walks led by our knowledgeable and friendly reserve staff! This event will take place on Saturday 13 June and is free of charge – so why not come along and join in the fun! Photography Competition Submissions accepted NOW! Closing Date 17th July. Winners announced at the reserve at 4pm on Sunday 6th September. Take part in our annual photo competition. Photographs must be taken on or from the reserve. September Charm has masses of large, rosy pink, cup-shaped flowers on tall wiry stems. One of the most reliable and free-flowering of the Japanese anemones.
