The appointment of a Head Teacher to the sad and
unfortunate vacancy at KPS has taken an inordinate amount
of time. I do not believe that the Education HQ has covered
itself in glory. Most recently three applicants were due to be
interviewed for the position but two pulled out at the last
minute. Given that all three must have been qualified to
do the job then commonsense says "appoint the one who
remains”. No! We are going through the process once again.
The Parent Council are well aware of who I would appoint
and as I am not part of the selection panel I have expressed
my views to the Director.
I attended the Kilmacolm Dramatic Society’s presentation
of ‘Allo ‘Allo which coincided with the 70th anniversary of the Society. The
comedy was superbly acted by the cast and a quite hilarious final scene saw
six Hitlers in full regalia on the stage being ridiculed. I wonder what the Daily
Record would have made of this if you recollect my May comments.
A number of the Victorian style streetlights in Quarriers have been damaged
in the recent strong winds; these will be replaced with “ standard “ units until
appropriate replacements are secured. Complaints have been made about dog
mess around the container beside the football pitch. I was alarmed to discover
that there were dog poo bags scattered about and a number slung onto the
roof of the container. A combi bin has now been installed by the council next
to the container . Thanks to the concerned residents who drew my attention to
this anti social behaviour which is particularly concerning as youngsters are
involved around the container. I am regularly getting complaints throughout my
Ward about these dog poo bags being left on the ground and even hanging on
tree branches. I know this is very much a minority of dog walkers who do not
dispose of these properly and increasingly there are more bins close to dog
walking spots which are regularly emptied by the council.
A WW1 memorial bench has been placed at the hard standing at the entrance
to the Kilmacolm War Memorial. With the removal of the trees the Memorial is
now visible from the village the way it was intended.
The demolition of the Institute has commenced and our Building Standards
department are monitoring the process. There will be some inconvenience to
residents and it should be remembered that a receipt from the sale of the
Institute was a necessary contribution to the quite excellent Cargill Centre.
Complaints about broken glass and debris on Smithy Brae have been
handled.
My surgeries are the Cargill 10-11am, 20th and Boglestone Community Centre
6-7pm 25th June. I can be contacted on 01475 712727 and 741969 and
Weaver’s Cottage, Kilbarchan
As part of her programme for the current season Christine MacLeod has
created a length of Black Watch tartan. In the cottage’s upstairs room there
is a small WW1 map, featuring Western Front trench names with Renfrewshire
connections, and ‘socks for
soldiers’ knitting patterns.
The Weaver’s Cottage has
been in the hands of the
National Trust for Scotland
for over 50 years and is a
four star visitor attraction
and has won a silver Eco
Tourism award. Photo:
