From Beds to the Street for
Edinburgh’s Youth Homeless
Charity
Charity Sleep Out sees comfy beds swapped for 40 winks outdoors in aid of
youth homelessness. On Friday 6 November, The Rock Trust’s annual Sleep
Out will see hundreds of people from across central Scotland spend the night
together outdoors and they are urging you to be real change, not just spare
change.
This year’s Sleep Out will take place at Festival Square, Edinburgh. Participants
will sleep outdoors in the square to raise awareness of youth homelessness
and much needed funds for the Rock Trust, which provides vital support for
homeless young people in Edinburgh and the Lothians.
Kate Polson, chief executive of The Rock Trust, said: “The Sleep Out is one of our
most important events of the year. It does not intend to replicate homelessness
– but it does give participants a glimpse of what homeless young people
experience when they sleep on the streets of Edinburgh.
It’s a challenge - cold, uncomfortable and often wet but it is an experience that
lives with the participants forever. Most of us can’t imagine what it’s like not
have a safe home to go to.
Homelessness is a real problem in Scotland. We support approximately 400
young people every year to build a better future and avoid or move on from
homelessness.
We’re encouraging
workmates,
families, teams
and individuals to
sign up and take
part to show that
homelessness
cannot be
ignored.”
Refreshments
will be available
throughout the
night along with
entertainment and
prizes for the best fundraisers and fundraising team and for those with the best
onesies. Marshalls and security guards will be on watch all night and Stoats will
serve a porridge breakfast from 6am.
For more information on how to take part please contact Katriona Harding at
Volunteers
This is a group of creative
whom are VOLUNTEERS.
Based at Bargarran
Community Centre, Erskine,
their occupied space is
impressively furnished with
musical kit, decks, games,
camera equipment. Last night they were making
a short film outlining the benefits of the ‘Young
Scot Card’.
They are currently in the process of agreeing their
VOLUNTEER STRATEGY along with the specific
VOLUNTEER roles required to help them on their
journey. In addition they are registering young
they receive recognition for VOLUNTEERING.
in due course. Meantime, if you think you would be
Daring Provost plunges 10,000ft
to raise 1000’s for four charities
Renfrewshire’s Provost Anne Hall soared through the skies as she jumped out
of a plane for her first-ever charity skydive.
The daring Provost has taken up
a mission to raise thousands of
pounds for four charities based
in Renfrewshire – Accord and
St Vincent’s hospices, Recovery
Across Mental Health and
Renfrewshire Carers Centre.
Provost Hall was joined by
a team of charity-focused
daredevils, who snapped up
the chance to experience 30
seconds of free-fall at 120
mph from a drop of 10,000 ft.
Provost Hall said: “Many people have said a skydive is not something you
expect every Provost to do, but when you listen to the inspirational stories of
the many people my four chosen charities have helped, you realise you need to
do something big, and this is big.
The skydive was thrilling and I was
lucky enough to experience it with
a dedicated team of daredevils just
as keen on charity as I am.
My goal is to raise thousands of
pounds for four charities based in
Renfrewshire. They do fantastic
work in the community and it is vital
we give them something back for
the hard work and dedication they
give to others.”
Previously, Provost Hall has taken
part in a charity wing-walk to raise
money for Help for Heroes and
a charity abseil from the roof of
Renfrewshire Council HQ, Cotton
Street in Paisley. Both events raised almost £13,000. In total, the Provost’s
charity fundraising scheme has raised over £18,000.
Skydive participants are hoping to raise a minimum of £500 each. All money
raised will be shared equally among the four charities – Recovery Across
Mental Health, Renfrewshire Carers Centre and two hospices – Accord and St
Vincent’s.
The skydive was organised by Skydive St Andrews.
