eSmoking & Teeth Whitening Options
Earlier this year I wrote about the variety of dental health issues that smoking
can lead to and their causes, but what about e-cigarettes?
The risk of mouth and lung cancer is certainly reduced if not eliminated entirely,
but e-cigarettes still contain nicotine and can inhibit the production of saliva. A
dry mouth can lead to bacterial build up causing halitosis and, more worryingly,
gum disease - the most common cause of tooth loss.
There have certainly been some encouraging signs that smoking has been in
decline in more recent years and the emergence of “vaping” as an alternative
is a positive one. Prolonged or heavy smoking can literally leave its mark even
if you do have the determination to give up as many smokers or ex-smokers are
left with discoloured teeth. The good news is that this is often easily rectified
and there are a number of options depending on the severity whether caused
by smoking, red wine and/or coffee.
An initial “quick fix” is Air Polishing, a simple process carried out by a hygienist
that involves air-blasting stains away with tiny particles (it’s like a mini version
of sand-blasting). At £30 it is very cost-effective and a single sessions can
make a significant difference to shade of the teeth.
At Kilbarchan Dental Practice we also offer a range of Teeth Whitening services
if you want more of a Hollywood smile. At the top of the range “Enlighten” will
guarantee a B1 white (the whitest shade) on the dental shade
guide and it is the least likely to cause sensitivity. Alternatively
“Pola” and “Dental White Beauty” systems are also highly
effective.
We would always recommend a free consultation prior
to any teeth whitening treatment. To talk to us call on
