Kilmacolm Heritage Centre – Progress Report At the last meeting of Kilmacolm Community Council a draft Minute of the discussion is quoted as follows: "It was agreed that a Heritage Centre along the lines envisaged by Jim Wood would be of benefit to the community and that his proposal should be taken forward. The KCC could not, however, take a leading role in this but would give their support to any group set up to develop the idea. It was generally agreed that the Kilmacolm Civic Trust was probably the best local organisation to lead a project to take the proposals forward. All four local Councillors have now given their support to the idea. The leader of the Council, Stephen McCabe, has gone further and indicated that Inverclyde Council could provide some Officer support to the Civic Trust if they agree to sponsor it.” Over 1,200 Kilmacolm Residents Oppose RBS Closure Over 1,200 Kilmacolm residents have responded to a survey by local MSP Derek Mackay opposing the closure of the Royal Bank of Scotland in the village. Last month it was announced that the bank plan to close what is the last bank in the village in November. Mr Mackay wrote to over 3,000 residents in Kilmacolm seeking their views. To date 1228 have responded to say they would like to see the RBS branch stay open - accounting for 98.5% of responses. Mr Mackay will be meeting with bank bosses in Edinburgh to discuss the closure and express the views of the hundreds of constituents who have responded with additional comments on the closure. Kilmacolm is part of Mr Mackay’s Renfrewshire North & West constituency. Mr Mackay told The Advertizer: “I have been completely overwhelmed by the number of residents in Kilmacolm who have responded to my consultation on the closure of the RBS branch. “A response rate of over 40% shows just how strongly the people of Kilmacolm feel about the closure of what is the village’s last bank. Many elderly residents have raised their own personal concerns with me over how the closure will effect them, especially as many of them do not use internet banking or have difficulties using ATMs due to mobility issues or health reasons. Businesses have also expressed concern over banking takings. Theses are all issues I will be raising with bank bosses when I meet with them in Edinburgh. Expecting people to travel to Johnstone or Greenock from Kilmacolm to do their banking is unfair on locals – which is a result of not only closing the Kilmacolm branch, but also recently closing the Port Glasgow and Lochwinnoch branches. Diaporama It was great to be back to catch up with what everyone had been doing over the summer break. As usual our first meeting was looking at our latest sequences. Some members were still on holiday but everyone who was there had brought one either finished or a ‘work in progress’. We started with a look at summer and Greenock, we saw the Ospreys at Cors Dyphi, Wales rearing their young, an in depth look at making ‘ Highland Pottery’. We had a work-in-progress called ‘Concours of Elegance’ looking at classic cars. This lead to a very useful discussion where we all contributed with ideas, techniques etc.. We had a really funny sequence that combined images and video called ‘The lure of the hammock’ - how to elegantly -or not... Get into a hammock! We then took to the sky with two sequences ‘Aluminium and Rivets’ and ‘Smithsonian Institute’ in Washington. Holidays were also featured with ‘An Artic Odyssey’ and a visit to the warmth of ‘Turkish Delights at Side’. We organised our indoor programme - lots of interesting meetings/activities planned! I had the pleasure of being invited along to the Houston and Killellan Kirk for the Service of Dedication of the Killellan Halls the newly constructed hall behind the existing Kirk building and the celebration of the 140th Anniversary of the Kirk itself. The cutting of the ribbon to the new halls was performed by Mrs Marion Dawson and the Dedication of the Killellan Halls by the Very Rev John P Chalmers. At the recent meeting of the Houston,Crosslee, Linwood, Riverside and Erskine Local Area Committee, Brookfield Community Council was awarded £1000 funding towards their request for a Defibrillator that will be sited at the Village Hall. Elections to Renfrewshire Community Councils including Houston and Brookfield took place between 1st and 30th September. Full details can be obtained at Renfrewshire.gov.uk Having been informed by a resident I visited and reported the damage to the footbridge over the River Gryffe behind Crosslee Park. The damaged uprights will be inspected and repairs attended to. Following correspondence from the residents committee in the Cricketfield Estate in connection with speeding cars in Kilmacolm Road I have requested some form of speed indicator be installed to prevent the danger from speeding cars along this stretch of road. My surgeries are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month in the Brookfield Village Hall from 6pm to 6.30pm then in Houston Village Hall from 7pm to 7.45pm. Houston and Killellan Kirk 2015 is the 140th anniversary of the first service to be held in Houston & Killellan Kirk. Since then the population has expanded to about 6,700 and additional facilities were required to serve the church and the local community, and to update the church facilities to meet current health and safety and disability legislation. A decision was taken to build an annexe to the rear of the church. Following many years of planning and fund raising the project was completed earlier this year. On Friday 11th September a service, conducted by Rev. Donald Campbell, was held to mark the occasion. After the cutting of a ribbon, by the congregation’s eldest member, Mrs Marion Dawson now in her 103rd year, to allow him access, the new Killellan Halls were dedicated by the Very Rev John P Chalmers, past Moderator of the Church of Scotland. The service was attended by a number of guests including previous Ministers, representatives of the donors to the Building Fund, the design team and the builders. H.O.S.T.
