New Kilbarchan Community
Group makes a difference
Kilbarchan Smile
A new community group is putting a smile on villager’s faces with the
improvements it has started to make within the historic village of Kilbarchan.
Kilbarchan Smile is all about making Kilbarchan a better place to live, work
and visit by getting involved. Following the success of its inaugural “Clear Up
the Woods” campaign “The Big Kilbarchan Smile Clear Up” recently brought
together more than 100 volunteers across a weekend with more than 160
sacks of rubbish collected!
Damon Scott, one of the organisers, said: “The enthusiasm and commitment
from so many people prepared to give up their time has been overwhelming. It
was a fantastic effort and it is great to know that there are so many people who
share our vision to make Kilbarchan an even better place to live, work and visit.
We had lots of families joining in over the weekend so hopefully the kids that
took part will learn the importance of not dropping litter in the first place.
He added: “Now we’ve taken this first step we want to try and keep the
village in good shape for the future. We are looking at running a campaign
that encourages residents and businesses to look after areas outside their
premises to try and keep on top of litter and improve the overall look and feel
of the village. Other ideas we’re working on include recruiting dog walkers to do
a bit of litter picking while they walk their dogs and undertaking some simple
refurbishment projects within the village. With help of Community Payback
we’ve also started work on the development of a community garden at the old
petrol station at the start of the village.”
Fellow organiser, Gail Scoular added: “Kilbarchan Smile would like to thank
everyone for attending The Kilbarchan Smile Big Clear Up. Over the 2 day event
more than 100 people attended with more than 160 sacks of litter collected.
A special thanks to Glenleven Inn for their generosity and support by donating
refreshments and crisps which hopefully will serve as an example for other
businesses in the village to do their bit too. Many hands certainly made this big
task much more manageable.”
For more information about Kilbarchan Smile and to get involved contact Gail
Scoular on 07985 749220, email gailscoular@gmail.com or join the group
“Kilbarchan Smile” on Facebook which now has almost 300 members.
Greener Renfrewshire Do You Bit provided equipment including litter pickers, hi
viz vests, bags, bag hoops and gloves and the group were joined by Councillors
Bibby, Doig and Gilmour who “did their bit”.
.....................................................
During the summer, Street Stuff came to the village. It was
well received, however, there were some complaints that
there were not enough activities provided so, along with
the community council, I have been told there will be dance
classes for youngsters held in the village. I am sure this will
be successful.
The council are doing all it can to help during the current
refugee crisis. At Septembers meeting of the full council,
there was a report tabled given details of how the local
authority are helping with this terrible sitiation. I am very
proud of the part Renfrewshire has played in the past
helping displaced people and is doing the same in this situation.
The council have agreed a sale with Persimmon homes which allow them to
buy the site of the former St Cuthberts school. Although no formal planning
application is in yet, one is expected to be submitted asking to bulid around
126 homes. I will keep you updated on the situation.
The upgrade of the Broadband service in the village has not reached all parts of
the village. Officers from the council met with officials to discuss this situation
on the 21st September. It was too late to report the outcome for printing
purposes to The Advertizer, but I will let you know how this went. A number of
people have contacted me expressing their frustrations at the lack of speed in
particular areas of the village.
At the last meeting of the Community Council, the police were told again
about the concerns over the speed
of cars through the village. As you
know this has been a problem for a
number of years. Lets hope there
is some positive action following
these discussions. Remember I can
