FOLK CULTURE<br />
The festival revives <strong>Estonia</strong>n folk<br />
music through contemporary music<br />
projects. The competition-concert<br />
tests the performers’ vocal and<br />
<strong>in</strong>st rumental abilities, their imag<strong>in</strong>ation<br />
and technical skills. The undertak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
promotes folk music <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>Estonia</strong>n music culture, provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />
l<strong>in</strong>ks betw<strong>ee</strong>n the old and the new.<br />
The patron of the festival is Ingrid<br />

The festival focuses on the earlier<br />
cultural world-view of the Baltic Sea<br />
nations and the ancient Nordic<br />
countries. The <strong>2012</strong> festival is the<br />
11th. This time the topic is TALES –<br />
not only the sagas and myths, but<br />
also refl ections <strong>in</strong> dance, song,<br />
crafts and music. The ancient truth<br />
and traditions <strong>in</strong> the tales are<br />
brought to the present day through<br />
an orig<strong>in</strong>al rendition, which has b<strong>ee</strong>n<br />
passed from generation to generation.<br />
Furthermore, the performers<br />
are given an opportunity to create<br />
new songs and music <strong>in</strong> the old tradition.<br />

The festival focuses on the topic of<br />
family, welcom<strong>in</strong>g folklore groups of<br />
children aged betw<strong>ee</strong>n 5 and 15, together<br />
with their parents, sibl<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

and grandparents. Everyone s<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />
dances, plays together; folk tales<br />
and ghost stories are told, new<br />
knowledge is acquired about water,<br />
forest and limestone. Groups made<br />
up of ethnic m<strong>in</strong>orities and from<br />
abroad <strong>in</strong>troduce different cultures.<br />
