Generic Theatre Standard No 23 - Booking Emergency Theatre Cases<br />
Standard Statement: All cases booked for the Emergency theatre will be dealt with in order of<br />
clinical priority as determined by the responsible surgeon and anaesthetist.<br />
Method:<br />
• All cases requiring emergency surgery must be listed via the emergency theatre<br />
coordinator on bleep ****<br />
• All cases booked, that require anaesthetic intervention, must be referred to the on call<br />
anaesthetist on bleep. ****, by the booking surgeon.<br />
• Details including the patient’s name, hospital registration number, date of birth, ward or<br />
location, surgery required, booking doctors’ name and bleep number, the name of the<br />
surgeon expected to perform the surgery and contact details, consultant whose care<br />
the patient is under, time and date of booking, and the theatre practitioner who accepts<br />
the booking, must be recorded on the emergency theatre list.<br />
• The doctor booking the case must identify the clinical priority of the surgery according<br />
to agreed guidelines. (Details available in Theatre*)<br />
• The theatre coordinator must be notified of any cancellations as soon as possible, and<br />
the reason for the cancellation must be identified. The name of the person cancelling<br />
the case must be recorded on the emergency theatre list.<br />
Compliance: 100%<br />
Exceptions: NCEPOD Category 1 patients who require immediate lifesaving surgery, and whose<br />
details may not be complete.<br />
