16 ORIENTAL PAINTING OSTASIATISCHE MALEREI Court Dragon / Hofdrache VIOLINIST GEIGER “… his soles like those of a tiger, his claws like those of an eagle …” These were the similes used in ancient China to describe the dragon. The mythical beast was seen to symbolise fertility and happiness in the Middle Kingdom. It was dubbed the “celestial stag” as well as additionally representing the sun, light and life. The Emperors of China, “Sons of Heaven” as they were deemed to be, opted to adorn their coat of arms with the winged creature. Initially captured on Chinese and Japanese porcelain, in around 1730 a red version appeared on Europe’s first porcelain, that from MEISSEN ® . „… seine Sohlen gleichen denen des Tigers, seine Klauen denen des Adlers …“. So beschrieb man im alten China die „Ebenbilder“ des Drachen. Dieses Fabelwesen gilt im Reich der Mitte als Symbol für Fruchtbarkeit und Glück. „Himmelshirsch“ nennt man ihn, ist er doch darüber hinaus das Zeichen für Sonne, Licht und Leben. Die Kaiser von China, als „Söhne des Himmels“, erkoren das geflügelte Geschöpf zu ihrem Wappentier. Zunächst auf chinesischem und japanischem Porzellan eingefangen, erschien der „Rote Drache“ um 1730 auf dem ersten europäischen Porzellan, dem MEISSENER PORZELLAN ® .
