Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696–1775) was undoubtedly
one of the most momentous porcelain
painters of all time. Not only did he come up with
the first set of 16 useable overglaze colours but it
is also him we have to thank for the stylistic
foundations of porcelain painting, most notably
through his “chinoiseries”. The great artist
produced drawings as source material for painters
that evoked an image of China as perceived by a
European in the Baroque age. This was a person,
it needs to be stressed, who never actually set foot
in the “Middle Kingdom”. Such fanciful portrayals
committed to MEISSEN PORCELAIN ® were to
fuel a craze for all things Chinese throughout
Europe. “Chinoiseries” in the manner of Höroldt
were masterpieces of porcelain art then and have
remained so ever since – the authentic item coming
only from MEISSEN ® , as here on a monkey musician.
Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696–1775) gilt
als einer der bedeutendsten Porzellanmaler aller
Zeiten.
