Figural Painting
Figürliche Malerei
In the 1720s, Johann Gregorius Höroldt drafted a painting copybook of
“chinoiserie motifs” for Augustus the Strong, who, like most monarchs of the time,
was crazy about chinoiserie. In the process, Höroldt came up with a wholly
distinctive style of figural painting so unique as to be only found at MEISSEN ® .
Even today the Manufactory’s vastly accomplished painters create veritable works
of art that allow the beholder to immerse themselves in the gaily coloured world
of chinoiserie. European painting models increasingly began to take centre-stage
from around 1740. Paintings by French artists such as Watteau and Boucher
were particularly popular as source material.
