This sentiment has pervaded my working life. What had simply
been an after school job became the stepping stone on the path
to a career in sales and marketing. This complemented my
personal interests in travel and the beauty industry.
Hi, I’m Jo Ewington, the new
face here at Waikato Business
Publications. My role as an

is an exciting chapter in my
sales career.
I’ve worked in the print and

many years and some of you
may recognise me from my

The team grows at
Cheal Hamilton
Cheal welcomes Dr František
(Frank) Havel to its Hamilton
team. Cheal is a multidisciplinary
consultancy, offering
a full range of Engineering, Surveying and
Planning services.
With a PhD, MSc (Hons) in Geotechnical
Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering
and more than twenty years’ experience
from fifteen countries, the addition of Frank
as Technical Lead and Senior Geotechnical
Engineer has further strengthened our
existing Geotechnical capacity. He
completed his MSc at the Technical
University of Ostrava, Czech Republic
in 1997 and his PhD at the Norwegian
University of Science and Technology in
2004 with his Doctoral thesis “Creep in Soft
Soil”.
Frank has extensive knowledge in general
geotechnical and foundation engineering,
site investigation, laboratory testing,
mathematical modelling in geotechnics,
feasibility studies, and tunnelling.
Before joining Cheal, Frank worked at
Czech and Norwegian Universities and
for big multi-consulting companies
such as Atkins in the United Kingdom,
WSP and Poyry in Finland and Tonkin
and Taylor in Malaysia and New
Zealand.
“I am trying to approach every
project with an open mind, looking
for the optimal geotechnical solution”
says Frank. “I love challenges
and geotechnical engineering is a
challenging subject regardless of project
size. I am happy to be a part of Cheal
and I believe we will build a strong
consulting group here in the Waikato
region”.
Besides geotechnics Frank is interested in
music, movies and photography. Frank is
married and has one daughter.
The requirement for good geotechnical
engineering has become more and more
evident following the Christchurch
earthquake events. Most District
and Regional Councils now require
investigation and specific design for all
Resource Consents, whether for building,
land use or subdivision. Good design starts
from the ground up and having Frank as
part of the team provides great support
to our Planning, Structural and Civil
engineering disciplines.
Be it an addition to your existing home
that may require a resource consent through
to a Geothermal Power Station, no job is too
big or too small for this long-established
professional consultancy.
