VIU.EDU Abror Nazirov is an Uzbekistan native working on his MBA at VIU. Mr. Nazirov is a young entrepreneur who founded and remotely runs his own language school in his home country. I grew up in rural Uzbekistan, we didn’t have a lot, but I did have school. It took me a while to realize that education would provide me the platform to achieve whatever I wanted. It drove me to work harder in school. I went to a lyceum and learned English prior to college. I knew that this was my future; education was the future. It opened doors and provided me with opportunities. Uzbekistan has a sustainable education system which is undergoing serious reforms to increase the quality of education and prepare skilled professionals who can contribute to the growth and development of the country. The education system is set up differently than here in the United States. Education is divided into pre-school, school, vocational and higher education systems. Pre-school education is the responsibility of parents, that is, they pay tuition fees for their children’s education. However, the state provides free schooling in all state schools as well as vocational colleges and academic lyceums. Young children attend primary school starting at age 6 and enter the US equivalent of 1st grade. Students attend this school for 4 years and then enter general secondary school at age 10 and encompasses US school grades 5-9. This system closely matches that of the education in the United States, however, when a student reaches the age of 15 or US grade 10, schools in Uzbekistan offer upper secondary schooling at a lyceum or gymnasium. A lyceum is similar to 11th and 12th grades in the United States. Because Primary and Secondary schools are compulsory for all students in Uzbekistan private schools were nonexistent until 1999. Upon leaving school, learners must choose either a vocational college, where they learn the basic and important aspects of their chosen profession and qualify in that field or an academic lyceum to prepare for higher education at universities. Higher education comprises four-year intensive study at an institute or university. The government supports individuals who demonstrate higher academic results. Each year, up to 30% students with the highest results are awarded state grants. The government also supports those who do military service with devotion and good discipline. Every year a number of servicemen, who successfully qualify during their military service, are awarded 25% bonus scores in entry exams. This makes individuals more inspired and prepared to serve the prosperity and development of the country. However, the education system is also facing challenges to be overcome. The country needs experienced and skilled specialists in all regions including rural areas. Therefore, special attention is being paid for private education. Private companies and centers are growing in number every year. They are responsible for a share in the preparation of competitive and skilled cadres who possess up to date knowledge of foreign languages, computer technologies, and professional skills. Education has placed me at a crossroads sometimes and life has given me a lot of unexpected challenges over the time. But, learning isn’t just inside the classroom; it’s all around us. Upon graduation, students can enter university or specialized vocational training. POST-SECONDARY Ages 15-17: Similar to grades 10-12 in the US. or** Ages 15-17: Similar to grades 10-12 in the US. TECHNICAL SECONDARY UPPER SECONDARY(LYCEUM) Ages 10-15: Similar to grades 5-9 in the US.* GENERAL SECONDARY Ages 6-10: Similar to grades 1-4 in the US. PRIMARY SCHOOL Ages 3-6: Program costs are paid by parents. PRESCHOOL UZBEKISTAN EDUCATION TIMELINE * Primary and Secondary school is mandatory for all students. **Students have the opportunity to choose between general upper education which provides studies to enter university; or a technical vocational school.
