PARAMEDIC RESPONSE PROGRAM A SUCCESS A few months ago, the Mauldin Fire Department began operating Paramedic level first response to the residents of the City of Mauldin and the Mauldin Fire Service area in Greenville County. The objective of the program is to provide advanced life support care to critically ill patients prior to the arrival of Greenville County EMS. To date, the paramedic engine company has responded to over 200 high acuity medical responses, approximately 77% of which required advanced life support intervention. A few of these actions were as follows: • 7 unresponsive diabetic patients received IVs with Dextrose to correct low blood sugar conditions • 2 patients with severe allergic reactions received Benadryl injections • 6 overdose patients were treated with Narcan • 6 patients in cardiac arrest were revived and had a return of circulation This program was made possible through support of Mauldin City Council, which voted to fund this initiative several months ago without an increase to taxpayers. The following key employees worked diligently to give this program a successful start: Capt. Andy McAbee, Lt. Eric Lutz, Lt. Mike Taylor, Firefighter Jacob Looney and Firefighter Anthony Horton. These individuals were recognized at the Mauldin City Council meeting March 20, 2017 for their contributions to this program and the quality of life to the citizens the program serves. HOT OFF THE PRESS This month, all firefighters completed refresher training on roof ventilation techniques, giving them the opportunity to review safety for operating chainsaws and roof and ground ladders. Dr. Holmes getting ready her citizen ride-a-long.. The department also hosted Dr. Rebecca Holmes, who spent several hours touring fire stations, learning the daily life of a firefighter, and spending time with the police department as part of her Leadership Simpsonville requirements.
