FITNESS: Team Members Find Fun, Innovative Ways to<br />
he Fitness Department of Sun City Summerlin Community Association, Inc., touches the lives of roughly 1,500<br />
Tresidents a day. Our mission is to help residents stay healthy and active <strong>for</strong> a longer and fuller life. We<br />
pursue that goal through two avenues – our fitness centers and our health and wellness programs.<br />
OUR TEAM<br />
The lifeblood of the Fitness Department is our people! Every<br />
member of the fitness team is an example of active, vibrant<br />
living. You can catch many of our team members during<br />
their off-duty time swimming, playing sports, dancing,<br />
serving with community health organizations, teaching<br />
and more.<br />
Kristie McWhorter, our fitness manager, holds a master’s<br />
degree in exercise physiology and has been with us <strong>for</strong> 10<br />
years. She is also a certified senior fitness specialist, an<br />
ACE-certified personal trainer and a group exercise<br />
instructor, as well as a functional aging specialist. She is<br />
an active health ambassador within our community as well<br />
as outside. One of her passions has been improving balance<br />
and falls prevention. She has spearheaded falls prevention<br />
programs in Sun City <strong>for</strong> several years running.<br />
She also represents Sun City Summerlin as a member of<br />
the Nevada Goes Falls Free Coalition and promotes falls<br />
prevention in the Las Vegas community.<br />
Heather Senn is our assistant to the fitness manager. She<br />
is a certified health education specialist, holds a bache-<br />
lor’s degree in public health and is a physical therapist<br />
assistant. She is the main coordinator of the health and wellness<br />
programs, including the monthly health education<br />
seminars and the annual health fair. Heather began a<br />
new diabetes empowerment education program <strong>for</strong> residents<br />
this year that made a great impact in many of our resident’s<br />
lives.<br />
Charli Douglass, fitness specialist, is a certified senior fitness<br />
specialist and ACE-certified personal fitness trainer<br />
and group exercise instructor. You may have caught up with<br />
her at a fitness center, or read one of her “Charli’s Corner”<br />
monthly features in the <strong>Link</strong> that focus on proper technique,<br />
types of workout plans and making exercise science<br />
easier to understand.<br />
Pam Shields, fitness specialist, is certified senior fitness<br />
specialist, an ACE-certified personal fitness trainer and a<br />
group exercise instructor as well as a functional aging specialist.<br />
She also is a member of the Alzheimer’s Association<br />
Speakers Bureau. She oversees our fitness department<br />
equipment maintenance program, keeping our exercise equipment<br />
in top shape. You’ll also be seeing more of her as she<br />
launches the “Use It or Lose It: Brain Health Program,” a<br />
four-week program to help residents understand how different<br />
aspects of life interact <strong>for</strong> optimal brain health.<br />
