JOKE CORNER A young man saw an elderly couple sitting down to lunch at a cafe. He noticed that they had ordered one meal, and an extra drink cup. As he watched, the older gentleman carefully divided the hamburger they had ordered in half, then counted out the fries, one for him, one for her, until each had half of them. Then the old man poured half of the juice into the extra cup and set that in front of his wife. The old man then began to eat, and his wife sat watching, with her hands folded in her lap. The young man decided to ask if they would allow him to purchase another meal for them so that they didn’t have to split theirs. The old gentleman said, “Oh, no. We’ve been married 50 years, and everything has always been and will always be shared, 50/50.” The young man then asked the wife if she was going to eat, and she replied, “Not yet. It confirms continuing improvement in the Government’s books and solid economic growth (expected to average around 3 per cent over the next five years). This is delivering more jobs and higher wages. The average annual wage is expected to reach $64,300 by 2021 – 20 Hamilton greypower Magazine – June 2017 up more than $17,000 since we came into office. Over 200,000 jobs have been created in the last three years – and a further 215,000 jobs are expected over the next four years. A $2 billion a year Family Incomes Package will help New Zealanders get ahead by adjusting income tax thresholds, increasing Working for Families and providing additional support for people on low incomes with high accommodation costs. Around 750,000 superannuitants will benefit from the package. The couple rate for superannuitants will increase by $13 a week on 1 April next year in addition to the normal adjustments. The package will lift the incomes of 1.3 million families by an average of $26 a week. As part of the $7 billion new investment in public services like health, education, and law and order over the next four years, Budget 2017 includes $321 million in Social Investment initiatives to help the most at-risk New Zealanders become more independent. I’m proud of the considerable progress we have made as a country in recent years and of the significant measures in Budget 2017 that deliver for all New Zealanders.
