Couples who train
together, stay together
Husband and wife Annie
and Bill Konnings
wholeheartedly agree
that doing exercise and training
together is more than just
keeping in shape.
"We always try to egg
each other along," says Annie,
who has proudly called
Bill her workout partner since
1995. That was when Annie
persuaded Bill to come along
to The Healthy Heart group –
now a part of UniRec’s LifeFit
programme, and they’ve both
been members ever since.
They regularly attend UniRec
classes at the University of
Waikato campus on Tuesday
and Friday mornings aimed at
strength and cardiovascular
fitness.
CLASS TIMES:
Even back in their native
Holland, Bill and Annie had
active lifestyles and the benefits
of working out together
extend far beyond the gym.
It’s not only something that
keeps their bodies healthy and
fights signs of ageing, but also
endears them to one another
more and more.
"It makes the commitment
so much easier and we both
have peace of mind that our
partner is doing all they can to
keep moving and staying fit,"
says Annie.
“It’s a great group and
we’re part of a very unique,
social and caring family so it’s
always great to catch up with
the members that are part of
the LifeFit group that gather
every week morning”.
Annie and Bill are among
the 152 active senior members
at UniRec, and one of 21
couples in UniRec’s LifeFit programme.
The UniRec LifeFit programme
is designed for seniors,
people with green
prescriptions or medical conditions
and others needing
additional support and encouragement
to be active. The
programme offers enjoyable,
social and achievable exercise
sessions that focus on resistance
and cardiovascular training
at a light and manageable
pace.
