Supplement payments
may change from April
1, 2018, there is an updated
Accommodation Supplement
calculator on the Working
for Families website at http://
www.workingforfamilies.govt.
Superannuitants who do
not gain or are financially
disadvantaged
Some superannuitants will
not gain from the changes as
the increase in one payment is
offset by a decrease in another
payment they receive, such as
Temporary Additional Support.
A Transitional Assistance
payment will be available to
the very small number of people
who may see an overall decrease
in their income of more
than $3 a week because of
their particular circumstances.
What else is changing?
On April 1, 2018, Family Tax
Credit rates will increase for
people with children under 16
years old, to match the rates
paid for children aged 16 to 18.
Currently, if your family income
is above $36,350 a year,
your Working for Families tax
credits reduce by 22.5 cents
for every dollar you earn above
this.
From April 1, 2018, if your
income is above $35,000 a
year, your Working for Families
tax credits will reduce by 25
cents for every dollar you earn
above this.
Why are the changes being
made?
The Family Incomes Package will
increase take-home pay for people
who are working, help lower-income
families with young
children meet their living costs
and improve incomes for those
with high housing costs.
It will benefit around
1,340,000 households by an average
of $26 a week.
Around 750,000 superannuitants
and 41,000 students will
also benefit.
These changes lift the incomes
of many households, especially
those with low incomes
after housing costs (in ‘housing
stress’), and with children.
They are expected to lift
around 20,000 households
above the threshold for severe
housing stress (considered to
be households having less than
$180 a week after paying their
housing costs, adjusted for inflation,
household size and type).
These changes are also expected
to reduce the number of
children living in families receiving
less than half of the median
income by around 50,000.
