Open and rational discussion
Last week tennis star Margaret Court issued an
open letter disapproving Qantass stance in support
of same sex marriage. Consequently, some people
demanded for the abolishment of her name tagged
to stadia in Melbourne and Perth in recognition of her
achievement. PM Turnbull opposed to this viewpoint
as our acknowledgment to her should not have
bearing on her stance on same sex marriage. I think
this incident is a challenge to freedom of speech in
Australia.
Every individual is an entity of many that form the
society which in turn have its systems. One of these
social systems is the marriage system which governs
interpersonal relations of couples and families. The
definition and functioning of marriage system is
subject to changes in response to social value and
structure. For thousands of year in China, a husband
could have multiple wives until legislative change
in recent time. Different countries would also have
different legal regulation of devoice. Margaret Court
of course has the right to express her stance on
same sex marriage in public, while the public could
have the right to agree or object. Obviously, it is a
kind of bullying and challenge to freedom of speech
if in this context that her honour has to be taken
away.
Margaret Court became a pastor after retirement.
In her open letter, she expressed her objection
to same sex marriage but that she still loved
homosexual people as with anyone else. She could
not concur with Qantas as an enterprise supporting
the legislative change so she would not give
preference in taking Qantas. Her preference of any
airline obviously would be a personal choice; and
that she indicated she could discuss with the Qantas
management on her thought. It would be a big blow
to freedom of speech if her great achievement in
tennis sport is to be degraded due to her open
support of existing laws and values which made her
different to those pushing for a legislative change.
As famous Western philosopher and atheist Voltaire
said: I disagree with you but I will respect your right
to disagree with me. So in a democratic society
we must all respect others freedom of speech as
far as permissible under the laws. Sameway defends
the right for freedom of speech of Margaret Court.
People supporting same sex marriage should
realise that it is their responsibility to convince the
public on the need for a legislative change, and
they should not be little those upholding prevailing
laws. Marriage system must reflect core value of
the society. I believe a referendum preceded by
open and rational debate on the issue should be
the best way out. is their responsibility to convince
