Happy New Year and hoping that,
that fella’ in the red suit brought what
you were wishing for.
As reality bites and we all line up to
get back on the ‘treadmill’ of work etc,
hopefully after a reviving break
for all, it could be suggested that
things ‘ain’t’ so bad for the local
Motorcycle Industry.
It certainly wouldn’t be news
to anyone (unless you had been
either hibernating under a rock or
marooned on a desert island for the
last three to four months) how much
pending doom and gloom is afoot
within economic circles. In fact so
much so that one would suggest
that economies are nearly stalling
due to the combined effects of
lacking confidence and the hard cold
reality that most countries of global
economic significance are either in
recession or teetering on the brink of
recession. All that said the Australian
Motorcycle Industry would possibly be
one of the few industries showing little
effect of the economic down turn.
You would all remember our
report in issue 8 how the local
scooter market is literally booming
as commuters are realising the
economic, environmental and time
saving effects these little two wheeled
vehicles can offer. In fact in this issue
a motoring journalist shares his month
long experiment of trading his V8 for a
scooter and admits to being a convert
to the scooter. But there is more good
news BMW, Harley Davidson and
Paggio are reporting record sales for
2008, and for Harley Davidson their
traditionally busiest month, December
HARLEY-DAVIDSON BEATS TRACK RECORD
2008 motorcycle sales hit record
numbers in just 11 months Harley-
Davidson Australia is celebrating another
year of outstanding sales with the news
that 2008 sales results are the best on
record ever in Australia.
In just 11 months of 2008 the iconic
brand has sold 7,150 motorcycles,
surpassing all previous yearly
results with December, traditionally
one of the best retail trading
months of the year, still to be
recorded.
The exceptional year-on-year
sales increase highlights Harley-
Davidson Australia as one of
few companies prospering in a
challenging economic environment.
A key strategy underpinning the
growth is the diversity of appeal
in the Harley-Davidson suite of
motorcycles.
There are exciting plans in the works on
the environmental technology front with
the announcement by Honda’s President
and CEO, Takeo Fukui, that the company
is currently developing a battery-powered
electric motorcycle which emits no CO2
during operation.
According to Fukui, in order for Honda
to sustain its business during the next
100 years of the automotive industry, the
company will further strengthen its ability
to continue advancing environmental
technologies and to apply them to creative
and attractive products.
Honda believes the characteristics of a
battery can be better utilized in the area of
In 2008 the Softail Fat Boy (FLSTF)
remains the highest selling model with
874 motorcycles sold to date, continuing
the 2007 trend. Strong sales performance
is also recorded by the Night Rod Special
(VRSCDX), part of the new ‘Dark Custom’
range.
In 2007 Harley-Davidson introduced
Visitors at the Harley Davidson stand Sydney Show 08
motorcycles, which are often used for short
distance travel.
In the pursuit of advanced environmental
technologies for motorcycles, Honda has
been developing and releasing products
that use energy sources other than
gasoline for quite some time. In fact, Honda
has been developing electricity-powered
scooters since the latter half of the 1980s.
In 2004, Honda unveiled a fuel cell
scooter prototype in addition to the hybrid
scooter and electric moped developed as
prototypes for eventual mass production.
The Honda FC Stack, which was
originally used in automobiles, was applied
to the fuel cell scooter, after being made
a new range of motorcycles collectively
referred to as ‘Dark Custom’.
The range is a distinct break from the
classic chrome styling for which H-D is
renowned.
Dark Custom is instead defined by
black monochromatic finishes and
modern urban street styling.
Harley-Davidson Australia
Managing Director, Peter Nochar,
said “Although our classic Softails
continue to sell extremely well the
introduction of ‘Dark Custom’ has
boosted our outstanding sales
result. In addition, our Sportster
range is on the rise thanks to
fantastic new models and the sheer
affordability.”
The Dark Custom range includes
the Nightster, Cross Bones, Night
Rod Special, Night Train, Street
Bob & Fat Bob.
ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE FOR HONDA BY 2010
Defying the doom and gloom
merchants, Piaggio scooter brands
continue to lead the growth in scooter
sales. They finished 2008 strongly, further
cementing their acceptance as the most
chosen scooter brands on Australia with
3591 units purchased by commuters and
enthusiasts alike. Comprising the Piaggio,
Vespa and Gilera Brands, Piaggio appear
to bucking a number of consumer trends
in the challenging economic environment.
Piaggio increased sales by 44.7%
over the previous year in a market that
increased by 7.6%. This provided Piaggio
with an increase in market share from
17.4% to 23.4%.
With fuel prices dipping below $1.00,
many expected scooter sales would slow.
Not the case says Simon Gloyne Piaggio’s
brand Manager in Australia,
“We understand why people might think
that, but the factors that drove scooter
growth in the past 6 years remain. An
increase in apartment living, worsening
traffic congestion, unreliable public
transport, sky-rocketing parking costs,
more concern for the environment &
fun lifestyle choices have been strong
influences for people to get on a scooter.
Petrol prices may have come down but
lighter and more compact to be the
optimal size for scooters. The 50 cc hybrid
scooter prototype employs both an internal
combustion engine and an electric motor
and provides ample storage space.
The electric moped has a built-in 360kW
light nickel hydrogen battery inside an
aluminium frame. Being powerful enough
to climb a 12-degree incline, the electric
moped offers performance comparable to
that of a gasoline-powered moped.
Honda is aiming to introduce the
fully electric motorcycle to the market in
approximately two years and envisages it
could be viable for commercial as well as
individual applications.
PIAGGIO DOMINATES SCOOTER GROWTH
our owners still remain interested in
reducing consumption and improving their
quality of life. It’s never been more fun to
do the right thing”.
Closing out the year on another high,
Piaggio also received the most coveted
“Scooter of the Year” award from Scooter
magazine for the Piaggio MP3 250 and
MP3 400 models. Mr. Gloyne commented,
“We’ve always known the unique 3wheeled
scooter provides unmatched
benefits levels of safety and confidence.
To have the leading industry publication
recognise this is fantastic. We accept this
award proudly”.
A TRIUMPHANT GRAND OPENING!
The grand opening of Triumphs’ new
flagship store in Melbourne ‘City Triumph’
was held on December 16. The crowd
started to gather at around 6.30pm for
the 7.00pm opening and cutting of the
ribbon, and by mid evening it was strictly
‘standing room only’ as an estimated
800-1000 Triumph fans packed the
store to take advantage of some
great opening specials and listen to
the sounds of bands ‘Peter Gawith
and Band’ and ‘Tantalum’.
The evening was extremely well
received, with regular raffle draws
and a dyno shootout for those who
thought that their bikes were up to
the task.
The building where City Triumph is
housed is steeped in history, having
been involved in the motor industry
for 100 years.
Sixty years ago, on December 17 1948
the first post-war BMW motorcycle rolled
off the Munich production line. The singlecylinder
R 24 was the motorcycle that
would bring BMW back from the brink of
extinction.
At the end of WWII Germany lay in ruins
with industry destroyed and the population
dislocated and dispirited. BMW plants
were badly damaged and there was an
Allied plan for the company to be broken
up. The future looked bleak. However
the American army was in need of a
vehicle maintenance base and BMW had
a trained workforce, some buildings and
equipment, so the company was given the
contract. This arrangement would keep
the Americans mobile, give much-needed
employment to the German people and
give BMW time to work on a future.
Under Director Kurt Donath, BMW
gained a manufacturing licence to
produce pots and pans, agricultural
equipment and bicycles but behind the
scenes, company management was
working on plans to return to motorcycle
production.
In 1946 BMW was given approval to
produce motorcycles up to 125cc. Work
began on the creation of a two-stroke
Boxer and the R 10 was quickly developed
to a running prototype. Donath, believing
that the capacity restriction would be
lifted to 250cc, had Alfred Böning and
The building is heritage listed, and City
Triumph has painstakingly restored the
art deco brass façade full glass front, as
well as many other strong period design
features.
Also the early period undersized brick
BMW Motorrad Turns 60
his engineering team secretly begin work
away from Munich on a new motorcycle.
This would be a difficult task as all the
production plans and technical drawings
were either destroyed or located at the
Eisenach plant, which was in the Sovietcontrolled
sector and out of BMW control.
A pre-war R 23 was located and it was
disassembled and every part measured in
order to produce new plans.
The restriction on capacity was
increased to 250cc and work on the new
model continued at an increased rate.
Designing the motorcycle was only the
first step; there were other problems to
encounter such as sourcing production
equipment and the raw materials needed
for manufacturing, as both were in short
supply and rationed. Donath went about
gathering all the much-needed machinery
from businesses in worse condition than
BMW.
In March 1948 the R 24 was unveiled
at the Geneva motor show and the initial
reaction from the press, public and
motorcycle dealers was positive. In May
the R 24 was again on show in Hanover
and by the end of the exhibition there were
over 2,500 forward orders for the new
single. There was now a sound economic
basis for the rebirth of BMW.
The R 24 looked very similar to the R 23
but there was considerable redevelopment
in the M225/1 motor and - for the first time
n e w s
work has been maintained as has the
beautifully rounded glass corners of the
front windows.
It’s been revived to its former splendour
and saved from the commercial pressures
that may have seen it converted into a
multi-level anonymous office or a
residential block.
Much like the Triumph brand,
the new home of Triumph is a true
classic that has stood the test of time
and will remind us of a time when
quality, passion and style was more
important than a balance sheet, glitz
or the modern sterility demanded of
most other brands.
We think it is the type of place that
only a product like Triumph can or
should be displayed.
- a four-speed gearbox.
Much of the technical improvement
came directly from the wartime R 75 as
well as the two-piece rocker cover, giving
a clean and up-to-date style. The 12 hp R
24 was a quality motorcycle.
The first R 24 was not destined for life in
a museum. There was a draw from within
the BMW workforce to see who would own
this historic motorcycle.
The winner was Mr Erdinger but
unfortunately nothing more is known of
him or the fate of the first R 24.
The R 24 was the most expensive
motorcycle available in Germany but by
1950 when the R 25 replaced the model,
12,020 had been sold.
It was an undoubted success and
paved the way for the return of the
Boxer in 1950 and the restarting of car
production in 1951. December 17 is
indeed a day to celebrate.
MOTOR JOURNALIST PITS HONDA SCOOTER AGAINST V8
Motor journalist David Dowsey recently
exchanged his V8 car for a Honda SH150i
scooter for a one month commuting trial
around the streets of Melbourne, and
found it difficult to switch back.
As the editor of ‘Australian Automotive
Workshop’ magazine, published by
the Victorian Automobile Chamber of
Commerce (VACC), David is passionate
about cars.
“I’m a big fan of V8 performance cars
and never gave scooters much thought,”
said Mr Dowsey.
That was until he got his learner permit
from Honda Australia Rider Training
(HART), and found himself considering
two wheels over four.
Scoots the pool!
Piaggio’s awesome 3 wheeled MP3
has taken out the inaugural ‘Scooter of
the Year award’.
Piaggio’s Mal Jarrett said “The MP3
provides unparalleled road grip and
stability levels, and being available in
250cc and 400cc engines, the MP3
offers power, performance and an ease
of use that makes for a thoroughly
entertaining ride.
The MP3 is a scooter that you
just have to experience to be able to
appreciate.
It’s very satisfying to see the MP3
receive the recognition that we feel it
justly deserves”.
“What amazed me about the HART
experience was how confidently and
quickly my group of fellow learners were
up and riding.
Almost none of us had any two-wheel
experience and yet we were changing
gears, indicating and emergencystopping
within no time.”
“The instructors were first class. I
wanted people who were encouraging,
but honest with me; the crew gave me
what I was expecting and more.”
“The open road is an intimidating
place for a beginning rider to develop
their skills, so I really appreciated the
safe and non-threatening environment of
HART.”
Andrew Hooper Wins Kawasaki
Kawasaki congratulates Andrew
Hooper from Aitken Motorcycles in
Moorebank, NSW for winning the 2008
Kawasaki Technician of the Year Award
in Sydney. On top of the honour of
being Kawasaki’s Technician of the
Year, Andrew also took home $2000
prize money.
In order to become Kawasaki’s
Technician of the Year, Andrew had
to prove himself as he and four other
finalists from around the country
were thoroughly tested at Kawasaki’s
headquarters in Sydney. Andrew shone
through as Kawasaki’s Technician of
the Year, exhibiting great knowledge of all
things motorcycle, specifically Kawasaki.
After a month of commuting on the
Honda SH150i, David was a convert.
“I live in the city so driving a big car
through peak hour traffic just doesn’t
make sense. Riding a scooter to work cut
my commute in half. And need I mention
the money I saved on petrol!”
“After the HART rider training and
spending some time on a scooter I’m
going to find it hard to justify my former
ways.”
“Not only would I now recommend
scooters to my friends, I am going to put
my money where my mouth is and am
going to go and buy one for myself.”
For more information about HART
www.hartridertraining.com.au
Andrew and the other finalists had
to undertake a written exam, practical
exams and show their competence in
handling a difficult customer relations
situation.
While Andrew took out top honours,
Antony Boyland from Down South
Motorcycles in WA was awarded 2 nd
place and Evan Byles from SA Dirt
Bikes rounded out the top three.
Kawasaki is confident that
customers of Aitken Motorcycles will
be even more impressed and assured
knowing that Kawasaki’s Technician of
the Year is servicing their motorcycle.

Scorching pace set for 2009 Le Minz 24 Hour Scooterthon
The fifth Le Minz 24 Hour Scooterthon
is shaping up to be the biggest yet, and
with organisers confirming a switch from
September to February, the pace is set
to glow red-hot around the clock on the
Gold Coast.
The Parklands precinct will again host
the event, which will be fought out over
24 hours - midday on Saturday February
14 to midday on Sunday February 15.
Hailed as the world’s longest and most
gruelling scooter reliability test, a full field
of riders will grid up to determine which
manufacturer and 50cc model has the
reliability and fuel efficiency to go the
distance.
In 2007, 18-year-old Jake Dolan
eclipsed the existing Guinness World
Record by covering 1178.76km in 24
hours on a TGB 101S.
When the event returns, both individuals
and teams of up to three riders will
attack the existing benchmark, vying to
write themselves into the record book.
To do so they will need to turn over
1500 laps of the 660m track on showroom-spec
scooters.
Correction: An incorrect phone number was published with
the Brisk Spark Plugs editorial on page 22 of issue 8
November – December 08 release.
The correct number to contact Brisk on is 03 9531 1315.
Mark Petersen of Exhibitions and Trade
Fairs said the organising team had been
inundated with enquiries about the return
of the popular event.
“Over the years Le Minz has generated
a strong following from within the industry
and receives plenty of mainstream exposure
as well - it’s a unique concept and
one of the most demanding events of its
kind in the world,” said Petersen.
“Scooter reliability is becoming more
and more relevant as it is becoming a
popular method of transport for those
wishing to beat the rising costs at the
petrol bowser - the average 50cc model
uses just 2-4 litres per 100km.”
“We’re pleased to be returning to the
Gold Coast Parklands in 2009 and the
event will kick off all the excitement of the
Australian Motorcycle Expo and Australian
Scooter Festival to be held a week
later at the Gold Coast Convention and
Exhibition Centre from February 20 - 22.”
“We’re moving from September to
February, so the hotter temperatures
will make the going tough for riders,
and make scooter reliability even more
important.”
“Each previous Le Minz has seen the
Guinness World Record fall - it remains to
be seen if anyone can top the time set by
Jake Dolan in September last year.”
“We’re expecting another huge line-up
of popular identities and are hoping to
get a number of local personalities on
board as well.”
The Le Minz 24 Hour Scooterthon is
open to any manufacturer exhibiting at
the Australian Motorcycle Expo Melbourne
or Gold Coast (also incorporating
the Australian Scooter Festival).
The field will be separated into 3
classes - A Class (LA Moped) , B Class
and C Class.
The LA Moped class includes scooters
that do not exceed 50km/h and is open
to both teams of up to three riders or
individuals on two or four-stroke models.
B and C class allow the entry of scooters
that travel faster than 50km/h.
Tens of thousands head to Sydney’s
premier two wheel showcase
The 2008 Sydney Motorcycle Show
welcomed 26,995 two-wheel enthusiasts
through its doors from Friday November
21 to Sunday November 23.
Showcasing the latest motorcycles,
scooters, ATVs and a range of industry
product and service providers, the event
received an overwhelmingly positive
response from visitors and exhibitors alike.
The presence of all major motorcycle
manufacturers ensured the show truly was
a one-stop shop for both first-time and
experienced riders, with a host of sports
bikes, cruisers, dirt bikes, scooters and
ATVs on display.
Inclement weather and an equally
gloomy economic forecast did little to
dampen spirits, with exhibitors reporting
record sales once again, continuing the
trend from the Australian Motorcycle Expo
Melbourne.
Event Manager Mark Petersen of
Exhibitions and Trade Fairs congratulated
all 115 exhibitors on creating the most
visually exciting and visitor-friendly event
to date.
“The Sydney Motorcycle Show has
generated an overwhelmingly positive
response from both visitors and our
exhibitors, with the event rated as the best
yet,” said Petersen.
“The support of every major motorcycle
manufacturer was invaluable, as was the
presence of an extensive range of industry
exhibitors showcasing a range of exciting
products and services.
“Our entertainment lineup featured
some of the nation’s best stunt riding,
freestyle motocross, trials and mini bike
talent who whipped crowds into a frenzy
from Friday through to Sunday despite the
weather working against them.
“Our international guest, freestyle
legend Seth Enslow was a fantastic
ambassador for the Show, only too
happy to involve himself with various
presentations and visitor autograph
sessions over the three days.
“With the trend of soaring motorcycle
and scooter sales set to continue and the
City of Sydney’s refreshing new outlook on
the social, environmental and economic
benefits of two wheels, we are already
looking forward to another incredible event
in 2009.”
A star-studded entertainment lineup
kept crowds on their feet in the Yamaha
Action Arena.
Australia’s leading rider and a pioneer
of the stunt scene, Matt Mingay made his
debut on a Harley-Davidson paired up with
teammate and Triumph rider Lukey Luke
to show off a bold new range of moves
across four daily shows.
The action then became airborne
as Steve Mini and Rhys Hillier from the
Yamaha Showtime FMX team took to
the skies, performing a host of the most
extreme freestyle tricks ever seen.
The Mini Moto Playground was another
crowd favourite, and the addition of a new
quarter pipe to the mix saw the Brown’s
Grafix Honda Jet Pilot riders reinvent their
list of tricks aboard their fleet of 50cc mini
bikes.
Trials champion duo Colin and Kevin
Zarczynski intrigued onlookers as they
manoeuvred their way
up and over a range of
obstacles within the confines
of the Sherco Trials Zone.
The NSW round
of the National Pogo
Championships presented
by Motostik and Dirt Action
saw Melbourne winner
Brendan ‘BJ’ Kelly continue
his winning ways. He will
head to the Gold Coast in
February for a final pogo
playoff to attempt to secure
the grand prize.
Joe Schembri took out the
‘Best of Show’ award for his
incredible chopper at the second round of
the East Coast Custom Australian Custom
Bike Championships presented by Heavy
Duty Magazine and QBE Insurance.
And everyone was a winner at the
hugely-popular Freerider MX Buff
giveaways, with thousands of dollars worth
of gear and prizes, including family passes
to Gold Coast Dreamworld and White
Water World, along with Motostiks, given
out to the loudest and luckiest visitors,
both the young and young at heart.
The action will heat up again as the
Australian Motorcycle Expo prepares for
its first ever venture to Queensland’s Gold
Coast this summer, from February 20-22.
Hosted by the Gold Coast Convention
and Exhibition Centre, the Expo will
team up with the inaugural Australian
Scooter Festival and Australian Personal
WaterCraft Show, creating the ultimate
lifestyle and recreation event for all ages.
BMW Motorrad Australia New Zealand
celebrates another record year in 2008
BMW Motorrad in Australia and New
Zealand has secured another record sales
performance underlining the strength of
the brand and the growing appeal of its
ever widening portfolio of motorcycles.
In 2008, BMW Motorrad added seven
new models to its Australian and New
Zealand line-ups which helped secure
the exceptional result of 2,119 machines
delivered to customers across both
markets. This represents growth of close
to six percent for the year.
The figure could have been even
higher, since the biggest selling individual
model, the BMW R 1200 GS was run out
at the end of 2007 leaving dealers with
no stock for almost three months until the
facelifted BMW R 1200 GS arrived with
the revised R 1200 GS Adventure, both
of which were launched at the BMW GS
Safari in March.
Furthermore, the two most hotly
anticipated all-new machines joining
the BMW family did not arrive until
very late in the year: the BMW FG 800
GS and the BMW G 450 X.
They were both launched in
October. Also joining the line up in
2008 were the BMW F 650 GS parallel
twin preceded by the BMW G 650
Xcountry and G 650 Xmoto singles.
The BMW F 800 GS arrived with a
huge backlog of orders to be filled,
only a few of which were actually
delivered within the 2008 total, the
remainder to be delivered in early 2009.
With a huge year just behind it, BMW
Motorrad is shaping for an even more
exciting12 months in 2009, with the
launch of the Works Superbike Team and
the debut of the BMW S 1000 RR, with
Australian Troy Corser joining Ruben
Xaus in the hunt for podiums and glory
on the tar. A full complement of BMW G
450 X works riders will take the innovative
race-bred dirt bike to the Works Enduro
Championships once again.
BMW Motorrad has a busy year in 2009
with the arrival in March of the BMW K
1300 S, BMW K 1300 R and BMW K 1300
GT four-cylinder update models, while the
long-awaited BMW HP2 Sport is destined
for an imminent Australian debut.
“Our dealers were initially deprived of
stock through the first part of the year after
a successful BMW R 1200 GS run out,”
says Cameron Cuthill, General Manager
BMW Motorrad Australia and New
Zealand.
“That situation has certainly been
addressed. Now we are working through
the backlog of orders for the BMW F 800
GS, for which very many people were
waiting very patiently for a long time
through 2008.
“We are delighted that once again
the BMW R 1200 GS is our top seller,
underlining the enduring appeal of this
go-anywhere machine, that suits both
urban riding as much as longer trips, and
of course the Adventure which is still the
benchmark for serious challenges off the
beaten track.
“With the launch of the BMW G 450 X
enduro, we have entered yet another new
segment of the market. The response
has been positive. With its innovative
engineering and agile handling the G
450 X will have a very strong future in
Australia.
“After being supply constrained
on hot stock for much of the year,
we should see far better supplies
reaching dealerships in 2009; not to
mention the arrival of the updated
four-cylinder K Series bikes, which
sporty riders will no doubt be
looking forward to with unmatched
enthusiasm,” Cameron said.
LIGHTHOUSE FOUNDATION HONDA HOME OPENS ITS DOORS IN MELBOURNE’S NORTH
A new Lighthouse Foundation “Honda
Home” begins operating in late 2008,
providing long term accommodation in the
northern region of Melbourne for a group
of young people who would otherwise be
homeless.
The Home is the result of Honda
Australia making a significant contribution
over three years to establish a residence
through the Foundation, the biggest
contribution the company has ever made
to one charitable organisation.
Honda donated funds have been
earmarked specifically to support, run
and administer the home which is located
approximately 30 minutes from the City.
The residence has now been leased,
furnished and staffed with a full time carer.
The Lighthouse Live-in Care Program
provides disadvantaged young people
with a stable family environment, living
together with a full-time carer who
provides constant emotional and practical
support.
Honda Home residents - aged 15 to 22
- are further supported by volunteers who
assist them in dealing with daily and long
term issues.
While the Lighthouse program is highly
unique and extremely successful, the level
of care provided is not possible without
corporate financial support.
According to Honda’s Managing
Director Stuart Strickland, the work the
Foundation does is incredibly beneficial to
the community.
“I’m proud to be part of something that
gives young people the chance to realise
their dreams,” said Mr Strickland.
“When we saw how much demand
there was for the Lighthouse programs
in Victoria, we realised one of the most
directly valuable activities we could do
would be to create an entirely new home.”
Youth homelessness is worse now
than it was 20 years ago, with nearly half
of all homeless people in Australia under
24 years old, according to the National
Youth Commission Inquiry into Youth
Homelessness conducted earlier this year.
Honda’s New Naked CB1000R Arrives
Honda’s highly
anticipated new release
into the naked bike
market - the CB1000R
- has arrived.
The CB1000R
features a dynamic,
hard-edged design
that immediately
grabs attention with its
unmistakeable look of
muscular performance.
Its short, slim tail
cowl, brawny fuel
tank and side cowls
convey an image
of awesome street
performance whilst
its mechanical parts
including magnesium
head, nickel-plated Allen-head bolts and
ACG covers, exude a high-tech look of
purposeful performance.
Remarkably, the CB1000R looks and
feels more like a compact mid-sized
sportsbike than the full-bodied litre-class
performer it really is.
Like the mid-displacement Hornet, the
CB1000R’s compact yet powerful Fireblade
inspired 998cm3 liquid-cooled fuel-injected
engine has been tuned for maximised lowto-midrange
performance.
However, unlike the Hornet, the new
CB1000R’s engine
has also been tuned
for stronger, more
exciting power that
extends further up the
powerband, resulting
in nearly 30% stronger
performance.
All this power gets to
the rear wheel through
a light-action hydraulic
clutch that takes full
advantage of the
engine’s strong low-end
torque to allow it to
be engaged at engine
speeds of less than
2,000rpm without fear of
engine stalling.
The CB1000R comes
in two versions - Standard and ABS - and
two colours including Dragon Green
Metallic and Pearl Night-star Black.
The standard model is available now
THOSE IN THE KNOW, KNOW
KYMCO MEANS BUSINESS
Kymco’s quality is renowned by those
‘in the know’. For example, the recent
partnership where Kymco manufacture
BMW’s high-tech, 449cc, G 450 X enduro
engine is testament that you can buy
Kymco products with confidence. It’s
fair to believe BMW has staked its own
reputation on it.
Already the 4 th largest scooter supplier
in Australia, (Kymco is the name behind
the ‘Bug’ brand) now there’s a lot more
on the go with existing Bug/Kymco
dealerships gearing up for a big year in
’09, and new dealers joining the Kymco
network.
No wonder they’re all excited about the
future. Because not only will Bug/Kymco
be supporting and expanding their well
established range of scooters, they are
widening their market penetration by
introducing a range of quality ATVs and
Motorcycles.
It makes obvious sense to be part of
You’re guaranteed to be in good
company. As you’d expect, established
companies are quick to identify the
Kymco opportunity and enthusiastically
embrace it.
Located in the heart of Melbourne’s
Motorcycling retail district, Scoota
City’s Managing Director, Yvette Jones
immediately identified the potential.
“We are very excited to be on board with
Kymco for various reasons.
The product has great professionalism
and support along with huge potential for
instant growth for us. The current line up
is superb and we’re very excited about
the future development of models. I am
particularly impressed that Kymco works
very closely with the factory, thus enabling
increased dealer support and satisfaction”.
Yvette’s General Manager, David Owen
Sherco Motorcycles Australia is looking for
new dealerships. We have spots available in
QLD, W.A, TAS & certain locations in Vic, S.A.
& NSW and are looking for dealerships that
are passionate about off-road riding in their
added; “Since the first day of dealing with
Kymco, we found them terrific and we
feel privileged to be partners with such a
reputable company. We honestly believe
Kymco will be the next big brand in the
market”.
Kymco began producing engines and
components in 1963 and has experienced
massive growth, evolving into a global
supplier of over 400,000 Power Driven
Products annually – and growing.
The Kymco philosophy demands
constant and intense R&D to satisfy
the needs of their customers. No effort
is spared to reach greater heights in
developing and manufacturing innovative
products. Kymco’s ‘forward thinking’ focus
dedicates 700 employees to their ‘standalone’
R&D department, which opened in
1978.
The new team at Kymco Australia
have much to achieve. The top priorities
are maintaining the existing Bug dealer
network, while extending the reach of a
wider, stronger, network and rolling out a
comprehensive advertising campaign and
marketing program to support them.
Established New South Wales
Bug/Kymco dealer, Close Motorcycles
understands the importance of quality.
Company principle Andrew adds: Kymco
is our manufacturer of choice largely
because of their reliability.
Having been in the trade for fifteen
years, I am at a stage where I only want
to deal with companies that consistently
deliver a quality product.
As a dealer, I want my post-sale
conversations with customers to be
happy ones, as opposed to lists of faults
or general disappointment with the
scooter as often happened with other
brands.
I believe Kymco to be superior to
most of the established brands in
the marketplace, including European
manufacturers, and expect them to win
more and more customers over time.
There’s never been a better time to
get to know Kymco. When you see the
Business has featured some Motorcycle
industry related inventions, typically the
Cone Head, a new helmet shock absorption
system, and more recently RIASOB an
almost unbelievable revolutionary shock
absorption system. However the process
of taking an idea to conception and then
to market is not a path for the faint hearted
indeed great determination is required.
BIKEBusiness
14 January 2009 b u s i n e s s t o b u s i n e s s
Mostly part of the process does demand
design and prototype support, and this is
where ALNO Product Services can help kick
the idea off in the right direction. Complete
Product design, taking an idea from initial
concept through prototype development;
tool manufacturing and process design;
supported with rendered images for
catalogues and Website promotions , and if
required a Finite Element Analysis is all part
of the service.
When that idea strikes it may be a simple
accessory or a complex idea requiring
guards are punched for the distinctive
pattern and feature quick secure
mounting with no cutting or bike
modification required.
will also be stocked in New Zealand
Despite over 30 years of riding experience, one night on the way
All new HealTech GIpro-DS
The all new HealTech GIpro-DS from
Australian Motorcycle Components is a
unique Gear Position Indicator.
It is designed for motorcycles equipped
with a Diagnostic System connector
– including fuel injected motorcycles from
Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Triumph, Buell,
Harley and Ducati.
While our original GIpro/ATRE is a
preferred choice for riders looking for gear
position indicator, the list of supported bike
models is very limited.
Due to high demand for our GIpro, we
have released the DS-Series, which is
compatible with more motorcycles than the
original GIpro. (Note: The GIpro/ATRE will
not be discontinued as the DS-Series does
not have ATRE feature)
The GIpro-DS works on different
principle than competitive products on
the market. It reads the gear position
information directly from the ECU, which
can make it faster and more reliable than
other gear indicators sold today.
There are no buttons, no “programming
wires”.
BIKEBusiness
20 January 2009 b u s i n e s s t o b u s i n e s s
The unit is fully automatic. There’s no
need to cut and splice wires, and no need
to access several connectors. You need to
connect ONE plug only under the seat – it
can’t get any easier than this.
Another unique feature is the size. It is
one of the smallest, most compact gear
indicator available, while it has an extra
bright, sunlight-viewable display.
The unit will be available with Red, Blue,
the
shop
Green and Yellow display.
It has a simple and clear front face
which goes along nicely with the factory
instrument cluster. The product is rugged
and 100% weatherproof.
Testament to Wiley X
A Good Product Speaks for itself, Kev
Metcalfe shares his Wiley X experience:
“I just thought I’d get in touch and say
thanks, some months ago I purchased
both the Wiley X SG-1s and a set of Lunar
Blue lenses. I’ve been using them for
riding glasses and 2 days ago it paid off,
I hit a pothole and came off the bike (no
real idea of the details, apparently amnesia
is not uncommon in serious concussions),
but my Bike helmet was cracked through
on the right side and the right lens of my
glasses is massively gouged and slightly
pushed back in the gasket - but it held and
protected my eye, so it was worth every
cent. I’ve got a beaut shiner, some nasty
scrapes, a bit of a headache and about 4
hours of my life are missing but all in all no
real harm done.
Again thanks, if you want the damaged
lenses back for promotional purposes or
anything, just say so.” Kev Metcalfe.
DAYCO BRINGS SCOOTER BELTS TO THE
AFTERMARKET IN TIME FOR SUMMER
As the Australian summer sets in, the
increase in motorists using motorised
scooters on our roads is significant. Aside
from the warmer weather, scooters are
also the fastest growing mode of transport
on many of our major city roads for a
number of reasons.
The soaring cost of fuel is one of
the main factors driving this significant
transportation sector growth, while
scooters are also a much more
environmentally friendly alternative to
owning a car, particularly for inner city
dwellers.
Modern low to high powered scooters,
whether subjected to day to day stop and
go traffic conditions, or if only used during
the summer months, require frequent
maintenance to ensure safe, reliable and
economical operation.
As a leading global Original Equipment
supplier of scooter belts for all European
and Asian makes and models, Dayco
now offers the Australian Aftermarket the
company’s full range of premium quality
replacement scooter belts, known as
Dayco Power Plus.
The Dayco Power Plus Aftermarket
scooter belt range initially consists of
30 part numbers, which can be easily
cross referenced from OE part numbers
to locate the premium quality replacement
belt for most scooters used on Australian
roads.
FIND A PART
Don’t know how to find that ‘hard to find part’ you’ve wanted for
years? Or perhaps who can manufacture after-market necessities
at a competitive price? Then D.J.Manufacturing, a local Australian
manufacturer can most likely help. Reference to their web site www.
sportomufflers.com or calling them will expose you to the range.
Typically the Sporto Mufflers and header pipes is a product
that D.J.Manufacturing sells which has been time tested, with both
national and international sales. It is built to last, and look good
meeting all relevant standards.
Not to mention the O.C.Discs which are manufactured in steel,
hardened and anodized; and D.J.Manufacturing’s speciality -
Period 5 Racing discs along with BMW K750 – 1000.
Servicing world wide export market D.J.Manufacturing cements
its position as a committed industry supplier.
Special prices can be negotiated with bulk orders from the
The Dayco range of Power Plus scooter
belts feature aramid fibre inserts to
ensure high thermostability and reduced
elongation, particularly under engine
starting conditions.
Dayco Power Plus scooter belts can
be more resistant to wear compared to
Polyester made products. The indentation
at the rear of each Dayco Power Plus
scooter belt provides maximum flexibility,
a larger mating surface and improved
cooling during operation. The same
technological advances in engine and
drive belt design and manufacturing that
has made Dayco a world leader in both
Original Equipment supply and in the
Aftermarket, have been applied to Dayco’s
BRISK Premium Spark Plugs
BRISK Tábor a.s. offers several types
of spark-plugs that can be fitted in most
spark-ignition engines.
They comply with engine
requirements and are designed to be
used with prevailing types of operation
of motor vehicles and the character of
their users. You can choose from either
matching equipment or equipment in
individual series in our catalogue. At the
same time, we also introduce a marking
system for BRISK spark-plugs.
A spark-plug is a device placed in
cylinder heads in internal combustion
engines, functioning on the principle
of spark-ignition of a mixture of air and
fuel. The spark-plug is connected to the
cylinder head by means of a thread. The
active part protrudes into the engine’s
combustion chamber.
Its upper part is used to secure a
high-voltage supply from the vehicle’s
ignition system to the spark gap of
the spark-plug. The basic function of
a spark-plug is ignition of the air and
fuel mixture in the engine’s combustion
chamber at a precisely defined time.
Unique and Patented Design
Higher output, better throttle response
and acceleration are achieved through
better fuel energy utilization.
This in turn also lowers the exhaust
emission.
Completely New Spark Gap Shape
Brisk’s design provides an unrestricted
and more spontaneous spread of the
flame front which is achieved by:
Retracted ground electrode - Unlike
conventional spark plugs, where the
discharge is constrained by the ground
electrode, Brisk Premium Spark Plugs
utilize a design where the ground
electrode is retracted so the spark
discharge occurs at the very tip of the
spark plug.
The ground electrode
design of the
traditional spark plug
restricts the natural
spherical expansion
pattern of the flame
front.
Brisk Premium Spark
Plugs utilise surface
spark discharge along
with retracted ground
electrode designed
to ensure maximum
spark exposure and
unrestricted flame
front propagation.
Utilizing hotter semi-surface spark
discharge - It is easier (takes less energy)
for a spark to glide along the surface of
the insulator than to break through the
air gap. Brisk Premium Spark Plugs take
advantage of this feature in its design.
Almost 2/3 of the spark travel between
the electrodes is along the surface of the
insulator.
The length of the spark discharge is
maximized with only a slight increase in
the required supplied ignition energy.
The higher voltage buildup at the center
electrode before the spark-over results
in delivering more spark energy into the
combustion chamber.
However, this spark plug requires a
sound ignition system (in good condition)
for proper operation.
Utilizing a special ground electrode
design - The spark discharge can
occur in almost 360 degree perimeter
at the place with the most optimal
air fuel composition; which is where
the ionization of the molecule is most
easily achieved. This special feature
ensures that the spark occurs at the best
possible place for ignition, unlike in the
conventional spark plug design where the
spark always occurs in the same confined
place. Since the air fuel mixture inside the
combustion chamber is not homogenous
(has different concentration at different
places) this results in faster and better
ignition of each ignition cycle.
In addition, there is no need for indexing
of the spark plugs since the plug is
symmetrical and there is no ground
electrode restricting the access of the air
fuel mixture.
Spark Gap Deep in Combustion
Chamber
Shifting the spark gap deeper inside
the combustion chamber provides better
access of the air fuel mixture to the
point of ignition. Since the flame front
propagates evenly in all directions the
Looking for The Advantage
Extreme Power & Reliability
best place for ignition is in the center of
the combustion chamber.
The compact design of the spark
gap minimizes turbulence and therefore
increases the volumetric flow.
Integrated Ground Electrode
The massive ground electrode is the
integrated part of the spark plug shell
which provides superior heat removal
from the active part of the spark plug,
improving the resistance to pre-ignition
and electrode burn-off. Ionization and
spark-over occurs automatically together
with an optimum composition of the
fuel/air mixture. The spark plug gap
is not shielded by the side electrode,
so the mixture has unlimited access.
Better mixture ignition, and thus higher
combustion speed, and faster flame front
spread, especially at the beginning of
combustion, allows better fuel energy
utilization. The subsequent increase
in medium effective pressure in the
engine cylinder and balancing of values
of medium effective pressure during
individual working cycles contribute to
increased engine power.
Brilliant HEMITECH worklights bring double
safety to workshops and maintenance
A rugged mains-fed vehicle servicing worklight that
combines the safety of nine volt power with the clarity of
a super-wide 70-degree LED beam has been released in
Australia by GO Distribution.
The HEMITECH 4 LED light – part of a new series of
HEMITECH work lights and cord reels - features a unique
hemispherical lens to deliver a powerful beam equivalent to a
100 w incandescent bulb, but with no hot spots or halos in its
brilliantly clear white light.
Designed to provide 10 years or more of optimum clarity
and safety in maintenance tasks, the light is one of the world’s
most advanced designs from the internationally respected
Cliplight Manufacturing, which is known globally for its “See
Better, Work Better” market signature.
Cliplight products – including its rechargeable HEMIPRO
high power lights – are already in widespread use throughout
Australia and GO Distribution Managing Director Gary Oborne
says “The new HEMITECH additions expand the range’s
safety and versatility. An outstanding safety feature is that the
HEMITECH unit plugs into mains power with a switch mode
converter that takes the Power down to nine volts so there are
no electrical safety issues with cables lying across workshop
benches or floors.
This gives great safety and great economy of operation.”
HEMITECH features include:
• Availability with either 7.6 metre cord
or with 12-metre retractable cord reel,
quality constructed in stainless steel
for ongoing durability.
• Sliding hooks and optional magnet
attachments, to allow highly flexible
positioning in engine compartment or
work area.
• Easy-to-replace lens shield, which protects lens and
LEDS, and replaces in minutes.
• Tough, quality construction
throughout to withstand daily
service in busy workshops and harsh
maintenance environments
• Non-slip grip and recessed on/off switch.
HEMITECH and HEMIPRO worklights complement an
innovative range of AUTOMOTIVE & HVAC products from the
international Cliplight Manufacturing Company, which is now
in its fourth decade of producing top quality worklights and
automotive products available from GO Distribution. These
include Super Seal sealants that help remove the need for
expensive fault-chasing and repairs to commercial, industrial
A cutting edge whiz a
must for every toolkit
The primary focus of the BACHO range, the point of
difference which sets them apart form the competition, is
the ergonomic design of many of their tools. BAHCO prides
itself on aiming to create tools that are easier, safer and more
effective to use.
They help reduce the risk of strain and over exertion, which
is quite common with repetition over long periods of time.
BAHCO’s latest advanced product
is the Ratchet Bit Screwdriver,
truly cutting edge among its
contemporaries and jammed full of
features to increase efficiency and
reduce muscle strain.
The Ratchet Bit Screwdriver
includes a 1/4” bit holder and
inserted magnetic function to hold
the bits and a ratchet function
with left and right locked position
meaning that no repositioning of the
hand is needed. The spinning blade
has been knurled for faster spinning
of the fastener.
The handle of the Ratchet Bit
Screwdriver is a two component oval
handle, with a high friction surface
that provide comfort in use and
increased torque. It also comprises
of a screwdriver bit storage
compartment with a quick release
opening button.
The reason behind BAHCO’s
focus on innovation and designing
tools that are both efficient and ergonomic is simple.
Each time you grip a tool, you are putting 42 different
muscles to work. By subjecting yourself to the strain this causes
on a daily basis, you risk overexertion, pain or numbness in
parts of the hand by using incorrectly designed tools.
The constant repetition of some actions causes strain even if
they do not feel particularly strenuous at the time.
BAHCO uses a scientifically recognised 11-point program.
This program covers facts and experiences gathered from
