Happy New Year and hoping that, 

that fella’ in the red suit brought what 

you were wishing for. 

As reality bites and we all line up to 

get back on the ‘treadmill’ of work etc, 

hopefully after a reviving break 

for all, it could be suggested that 

things ‘ain’t’ so bad for the local 

Motorcycle Industry. 

It certainly wouldn’t be news 

to anyone (unless you had been 

either hibernating under a rock or 

marooned on a desert island for the 

last three to four months) how much 

pending doom and gloom is afoot 

within economic circles. In fact so 

much so that one would suggest 

that economies are nearly stalling 

due to the combined effects of 

lacking confidence and the hard cold 

reality that most countries of global

economic significance are either in 

recession or teetering on the brink of 

recession. All that said the Australian 

Motorcycle Industry would possibly be 

one of the few industries showing little 

effect of the economic down turn. 

You would all remember our 

report in issue 8 how the local 

scooter market is literally booming 

as commuters are realising the 

economic, environmental and time 

saving effects these little two wheeled 

vehicles can offer. In fact in this issue 

a motoring journalist shares his month 

long experiment of trading his V8 for a 

scooter and admits to being a convert 

to the scooter. But there is more good 

news BMW, Harley Davidson and 

Paggio are reporting record sales for 

2008, and for Harley Davidson their 

traditionally busiest month, December

HARLEY-DAVIDSON BEATS TRACK RECORD 

2008 motorcycle sales hit record 

numbers in just 11 months Harley- 

Davidson Australia is celebrating another 

year of outstanding sales with the news 

that 2008 sales results are the best on 

record ever in Australia. 

In just 11 months of 2008 the iconic 

brand has sold 7,150 motorcycles, 

surpassing all previous yearly 

results with December, traditionally 

one of the best retail trading 

months of the year, still to be 

recorded. 

The exceptional year-on-year 

sales increase highlights Harley- 

Davidson Australia as one of 

few companies prospering in a 

challenging economic environment. 

A key strategy underpinning the 

growth is the diversity of appeal 

in the Harley-Davidson suite of 

motorcycles. 

There are exciting plans in the works on 

the environmental technology front with 

the announcement by Honda’s President 

and CEO, Takeo Fukui, that the company 

is currently developing a battery-powered 

electric motorcycle which emits no CO2 

during operation. 

According to Fukui, in order for Honda 

to sustain its business during the next 

100 years of the automotive industry, the 

company will further strengthen its ability 

to continue advancing environmental 

technologies and to apply them to creative 

and attractive products. 

Honda believes the characteristics of a 

battery can be better utilized in the area of

In 2008 the Softail Fat Boy (FLSTF) 

remains the highest selling model with 

874 motorcycles sold to date, continuing 

the 2007 trend. Strong sales performance 

is also recorded by the Night Rod Special 

(VRSCDX), part of the new ‘Dark Custom’ 

range. 

In 2007 Harley-Davidson introduced 

Visitors at the Harley Davidson stand Sydney Show 08 

motorcycles, which are often used for short 

distance travel. 

In the pursuit of advanced environmental 

technologies for motorcycles, Honda has 

been developing and releasing products 

that use energy sources other than 

gasoline for quite some time. In fact, Honda 

has been developing electricity-powered 

scooters since the latter half of the 1980s. 

In 2004, Honda unveiled a fuel cell 

scooter prototype in addition to the hybrid 

scooter and electric moped developed as 

prototypes for eventual mass production. 

The Honda FC Stack, which was 

originally used in automobiles, was applied 

to the fuel cell scooter, after being made 

a new range of motorcycles collectively 

referred to as ‘Dark Custom’. 

The range is a distinct break from the 

classic chrome styling for which H-D is 

renowned. 

Dark Custom is instead defined by 

black monochromatic finishes and 

modern urban street styling.

said “Although our classic Softails 

continue to sell extremely well the 

introduction of ‘Dark Custom’ has 

boosted our outstanding sales 

result. In addition, our Sportster 

range is on the rise thanks to 

fantastic new models and the sheer 

affordability.” 

The Dark Custom range includes 

the Nightster, Cross Bones, Night 

Rod Special, Night Train, Street 

Bob & Fat Bob. 

ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE FOR HONDA BY 2010 

Defying the doom and gloom 

merchants, Piaggio scooter brands 

continue to lead the growth in scooter 

sales. They finished 2008 strongly, further 

cementing their acceptance as the most 

chosen scooter brands on Australia with 

3591 units purchased by commuters and 

enthusiasts alike. Comprising the Piaggio, 

Vespa and Gilera Brands, Piaggio appear 

to bucking a number of consumer trends 

in the challenging economic environment. 

Piaggio increased sales by 44.7% 

over the previous year in a market that 

increased by 7.6%. This provided Piaggio 

with an increase in market share from 

17.4% to 23.4%. 

With fuel prices dipping below $1.00, 

many expected scooter sales would slow. 

Not the case says Simon Gloyne Piaggio’s 

brand Manager in Australia, 

“We understand why people might think 

that, but the factors that drove scooter 

growth in the past 6 years remain. An 

increase in apartment living, worsening 

traffic congestion, unreliable public 

transport, sky-rocketing parking costs, 

more concern for the environment & 

fun lifestyle choices have been strong 

influences for people to get on a scooter. 

Petrol prices may have come down but 

lighter and more compact to be the 

optimal size for scooters. The 50 cc hybrid 

scooter prototype employs both an internal 

combustion engine and an electric motor 

and provides ample storage space. 

The electric moped has a built-in 360kW 

light nickel hydrogen battery inside an 

aluminium frame. Being powerful enough 

to climb a 12-degree incline, the electric 

moped offers performance comparable to 

that of a gasoline-powered moped. 

Honda is aiming to introduce the 

fully electric motorcycle to the market in 

approximately two years and envisages it 

could be viable for commercial as well as 

individual applications.

Closing out the year on another high, 

Piaggio also received the most coveted 

“Scooter of the Year” award from Scooter 

magazine for the Piaggio MP3 250 and 

MP3 400 models. Mr. Gloyne commented,

To have the leading industry publication 

recognise this is fantastic. We accept this 

award proudly”.

A TRIUMPHANT GRAND OPENING! 

The grand opening of Triumphs’ new 

flagship store in Melbourne ‘City Triumph’ 

was held on December 16. The crowd 

started to gather at around 6.30pm for 

the 7.00pm opening and cutting of the 

ribbon, and by mid evening it was strictly 

‘standing room only’ as an estimated 

800-1000 Triumph fans packed the 

store to take advantage of some 

great opening specials and listen to 

the sounds of bands ‘Peter Gawith 

and Band’ and ‘Tantalum’. 

The evening was extremely well 

received, with regular raffle draws 

and a dyno shootout for those who 

thought that their bikes were up to 

the task. 

The building where City Triumph is 

housed is steeped in history, having 

been involved in the motor industry 

for 100 years. 

Sixty years ago, on December 17 1948 

the first post-war BMW motorcycle rolled 

off the Munich production line. The singlecylinder 

R 24 was the motorcycle that 

would bring BMW back from the brink of 

extinction. 

At the end of WWII Germany lay in ruins 

with industry destroyed and the population 

dislocated and dispirited. BMW plants 

were badly damaged and there was an 

Allied plan for the company to be broken 

up. The future looked bleak. However 

the American army was in need of a 

vehicle maintenance base and BMW had 

a trained workforce, some buildings and 

equipment, so the company was given the 

contract. This arrangement would keep 

the Americans mobile, give much-needed 

employment to the German people and 

give BMW time to work on a future. 

Under Director Kurt Donath, BMW 

gained a manufacturing licence to 

produce pots and pans, agricultural 

equipment and bicycles but behind the 

scenes, company management was 

working on plans to return to motorcycle 

production. 

In 1946 BMW was given approval to 

produce motorcycles up to 125cc. Work 

began on the creation of a two-stroke 

Boxer and the R 10 was quickly developed 

to a running prototype. Donath, believing 

that the capacity restriction would be 

lifted to 250cc, had Alfred Böning and

his engineering team secretly begin work 

away from Munich on a new motorcycle. 

This would be a difficult task as all the 

production plans and technical drawings 

were either destroyed or located at the 

Eisenach plant, which was in the Sovietcontrolled 

sector and out of BMW control. 

A pre-war R 23 was located and it was 

disassembled and every part measured in 

order to produce new plans. 

The restriction on capacity was 

increased to 250cc and work on the new 

model continued at an increased rate. 

Designing the motorcycle was only the 

first step; there were other problems to 

encounter such as sourcing production 

equipment and the raw materials needed 

for manufacturing, as both were in short 

supply and rationed. Donath went about 

gathering all the much-needed machinery 

from businesses in worse condition than 

BMW. 

In March 1948 the R 24 was unveiled 

at the Geneva motor show and the initial 

reaction from the press, public and 

motorcycle dealers was positive. In May 

the R 24 was again on show in Hanover 

and by the end of the exhibition there were 

over 2,500 forward orders for the new 

single. There was now a sound economic 

basis for the rebirth of BMW. 

The R 24 looked very similar to the R 23 

but there was considerable redevelopment 

in the M225/1 motor and - for the first time

work has been maintained as has the 

beautifully rounded glass corners of the 

front windows. 

It’s been revived to its former splendour 

and saved from the commercial pressures 

that may have seen it converted into a 

multi-level anonymous office or a 

residential block. 

Much like the Triumph brand, 

the new home of Triumph is a true 

classic that has stood the test of time 

and will remind us of a time when 

quality, passion and style was more 

important than a balance sheet, glitz 

or the modern sterility demanded of 

most other brands.

Much of the technical improvement 

came directly from the wartime R 75 as 

well as the two-piece rocker cover, giving 

a clean and up-to-date style. The 12 hp R 

24 was a quality motorcycle. 

The first R 24 was not destined for life in 

a museum. There was a draw from within 

the BMW workforce to see who would own 

this historic motorcycle. 

The winner was Mr Erdinger but 

unfortunately nothing more is known of 

him or the fate of the first R 24. 

The R 24 was the most expensive 

motorcycle available in Germany but by 

1950 when the R 25 replaced the model, 

12,020 had been sold. 

It was an undoubted success and 

paved the way for the return of the 

Boxer in 1950 and the restarting of car 

production in 1951. December 17 is 

indeed a day to celebrate.

MOTOR JOURNALIST PITS HONDA SCOOTER AGAINST V8 

Motor journalist David Dowsey recently 

exchanged his V8 car for a Honda SH150i 

scooter for a one month commuting trial 

around the streets of Melbourne, and 

found it difficult to switch back. 

As the editor of ‘Australian Automotive 

Workshop’ magazine, published by 

the Victorian Automobile Chamber of 

Commerce (VACC), David is passionate 

about cars. 

“I’m a big fan of V8 performance cars 

and never gave scooters much thought,” 

said Mr Dowsey. 

That was until he got his learner permit 

from Honda Australia Rider Training 

(HART), and found himself considering 

two wheels over four.

Andrew Hooper Wins Kawasaki 

Kawasaki congratulates Andrew 

Hooper from Aitken Motorcycles in 

Moorebank, NSW for winning the 2008 

Kawasaki Technician of the Year Award 

in Sydney. On top of the honour of 

being Kawasaki’s Technician of the 

Year, Andrew also took home $2000 

prize money. 

In order to become Kawasaki’s 

Technician of the Year, Andrew had 

to prove himself as he and four other 

finalists from around the country 

were thoroughly tested at Kawasaki’s 

headquarters in Sydney. Andrew shone 

through as Kawasaki’s Technician of 

the Year, exhibiting great knowledge of all 

things motorcycle, specifically Kawasaki. 

After a month of commuting on the 

Honda SH150i, David was a convert. 

“I live in the city so driving a big car 

through peak hour traffic just doesn’t 

make sense. Riding a scooter to work cut 

my commute in half. And need I mention 

the money I saved on petrol!” 

“After the HART rider training and 

spending some time on a scooter I’m 

going to find it hard to justify my former 

ways.” 

“Not only would I now recommend 

scooters to my friends, I am going to put 

my money where my mouth is and am 

going to go and buy one for myself.”

Scorching pace set for 2009 Le Minz 24 Hour Scooterthon 

The fifth Le Minz 24 Hour Scooterthon 

is shaping up to be the biggest yet, and 

with organisers confirming a switch from 

September to February, the pace is set 

to glow red-hot around the clock on the 

Gold Coast. 

The Parklands precinct will again host 

the event, which will be fought out over 

24 hours - midday on Saturday February 

14 to midday on Sunday February 15. 

Hailed as the world’s longest and most 

gruelling scooter reliability test, a full field 

of riders will grid up to determine which 

manufacturer and 50cc model has the 

reliability and fuel efficiency to go the 

distance. 

In 2007, 18-year-old Jake Dolan 

eclipsed the existing Guinness World 

Record by covering 1178.76km in 24 

hours on a TGB 101S. 

When the event returns, both individuals 

and teams of up to three riders will 

attack the existing benchmark, vying to 

write themselves into the record book. 

To do so they will need to turn over 

1500 laps of the 660m track on showroom-spec 

scooters.

a strong following from within the industry 

and receives plenty of mainstream exposure 

as well - it’s a unique concept and 

one of the most demanding events of its 

kind in the world,” said Petersen. 

“Scooter reliability is becoming more 

and more relevant as it is becoming a 

popular method of transport for those 

wishing to beat the rising costs at the 

petrol bowser - the average 50cc model 

uses just 2-4 litres per 100km.” 

“We’re pleased to be returning to the 

Gold Coast Parklands in 2009 and the 

event will kick off all the excitement of the 

Australian Motorcycle Expo and Australian 

Scooter Festival to be held a week 

later at the Gold Coast Convention and 

Exhibition Centre from February 20 - 22.” 

“We’re moving from September to 

February, so the hotter temperatures 

will make the going tough for riders, 

and make scooter reliability even more 

important.” 

“Each previous Le Minz has seen the 

Guinness World Record fall - it remains to 

be seen if anyone can top the time set by 

Jake Dolan in September last year.” 

“We’re expecting another huge line-up 

of popular identities and are hoping to 

get a number of local personalities on 

board as well.” 

The Le Minz 24 Hour Scooterthon is 

open to any manufacturer exhibiting at 

the Australian Motorcycle Expo Melbourne 

or Gold Coast (also incorporating 

the Australian Scooter Festival). 

The field will be separated into 3 

classes - A Class (LA Moped) , B Class 

and C Class. 

The LA Moped class includes scooters 

that do not exceed 50km/h and is open 

to both teams of up to three riders or 

individuals on two or four-stroke models. 

B and C class allow the entry of scooters 

that travel faster than 50km/h.

Tens of thousands head to Sydney’s 

premier two wheel showcase 

The 2008 Sydney Motorcycle Show 

welcomed 26,995 two-wheel enthusiasts 

through its doors from Friday November 

21 to Sunday November 23. 

Showcasing the latest motorcycles, 

scooters, ATVs and a range of industry 

product and service providers, the event 

received an overwhelmingly positive 

response from visitors and exhibitors alike. 

The presence of all major motorcycle 

manufacturers ensured the show truly was 

a one-stop shop for both first-time and 

experienced riders, with a host of sports 

bikes, cruisers, dirt bikes, scooters and 

ATVs on display. 

Inclement weather and an equally 

gloomy economic forecast did little to 

dampen spirits, with exhibitors reporting 

record sales once again, continuing the 

trend from the Australian Motorcycle Expo 

Melbourne. 

Event Manager Mark Petersen of 

Exhibitions and Trade Fairs congratulated 

all 115 exhibitors on creating the most 

visually exciting and visitor-friendly event 

to date. 

“The Sydney Motorcycle Show has 

generated an overwhelmingly positive 

response from both visitors and our 

exhibitors, with the event rated as the best 

yet,” said Petersen. 

“The support of every major motorcycle 

manufacturer was invaluable, as was the 

presence of an extensive range of industry 

exhibitors showcasing a range of exciting 

products and services. 

“Our entertainment lineup featured 

some of the nation’s best stunt riding, 

freestyle motocross, trials and mini bike 

talent who whipped crowds into a frenzy 




from Friday through to Sunday despite the 

weather working against them. 

“Our international guest, freestyle 

legend Seth Enslow was a fantastic 

ambassador for the Show, only too 

happy to involve himself with various 

presentations and visitor autograph 

sessions over the three days. 

“With the trend of soaring motorcycle 

and scooter sales set to continue and the 

City of Sydney’s refreshing new outlook on 

the social, environmental and economic 

benefits of two wheels, we are already 

looking forward to another incredible event 

in 2009.” 

A star-studded entertainment lineup 

kept crowds on their feet in the Yamaha 

Action Arena. 

Australia’s leading rider and a pioneer 

of the stunt scene, Matt Mingay made his 

debut on a Harley-Davidson paired up with 

teammate and Triumph rider Lukey Luke 

to show off a bold new range of moves 

across four daily shows. 

The action then became airborne 

as Steve Mini and Rhys Hillier from the 

Yamaha Showtime FMX team took to 

the skies, performing a host of the most 

extreme freestyle tricks ever seen. 

The Mini Moto Playground was another 

crowd favourite, and the addition of a new 

quarter pipe to the mix saw the Brown’s 

Grafix Honda Jet Pilot riders reinvent their 

list of tricks aboard their fleet of 50cc mini 

bikes. 

Trials champion duo Colin and Kevin 

Zarczynski intrigued onlookers as they 

manoeuvred their way 

up and over a range of 

obstacles within the confines 

of the Sherco Trials Zone. 

The NSW round 

of the National Pogo 

Championships presented 

by Motostik and Dirt Action 

saw Melbourne winner 

Brendan ‘BJ’ Kelly continue 

his winning ways. He will 

head to the Gold Coast in 

February for a final pogo

BMW Motorrad Australia New Zealand 

celebrates another record year in 2008 

BMW Motorrad in Australia and New 

Zealand has secured another record sales 

performance underlining the strength of 

the brand and the growing appeal of its 

ever widening portfolio of motorcycles. 

In 2008, BMW Motorrad added seven 

new models to its Australian and New 

Zealand line-ups which helped secure 

the exceptional result of 2,119 machines 

delivered to customers across both 

markets. This represents growth of close 

to six percent for the year. 

The figure could have been even 

higher, since the biggest selling individual 

model, the BMW R 1200 GS was run out 

at the end of 2007 leaving dealers with 

no stock for almost three months until the 

facelifted BMW R 1200 GS arrived with 

the revised R 1200 GS Adventure, both 

of which were launched at the BMW GS 

Safari in March. 

Furthermore, the two most hotly 

anticipated all-new machines joining 

the BMW family did not arrive until 

very late in the year: the BMW FG 800 

GS and the BMW G 450 X. 

They were both launched in 

October. Also joining the line up in 

2008 were the BMW F 650 GS parallel 

twin preceded by the BMW G 650 

Xcountry and G 650 Xmoto singles. 

The BMW F 800 GS arrived with a 

huge backlog of orders to be filled, 

only a few of which were actually 

delivered within the 2008 total, the 

remainder to be delivered in early 2009. 

With a huge year just behind it, BMW 

Motorrad is shaping for an even more 

exciting12 months in 2009, with the 

launch of the Works Superbike Team and 

the debut of the BMW S 1000 RR, with 

Australian Troy Corser joining Ruben 

Xaus in the hunt for podiums and glory 

on the tar. A full complement of BMW G 

450 X works riders will take the innovative 

race-bred dirt bike to the Works Enduro 

Championships once again. 

BMW Motorrad has a busy year in 2009 

with the arrival in March of the BMW K 

1300 S, BMW K 1300 R and BMW K 1300 

GT four-cylinder update models, while the 

long-awaited BMW HP2 Sport is destined 

for an imminent Australian debut. 

“Our dealers were initially deprived of 

stock through the first part of the year after 

a successful BMW R 1200 GS run out,” 

says Cameron Cuthill, General Manager 

BMW Motorrad Australia and New 

Zealand. 

“That situation has certainly been 

addressed. Now we are working through 

the backlog of orders for the BMW F 800 

GS, for which very many people were 

waiting very patiently for a long time 

through 2008. 

“We are delighted that once again 

the BMW R 1200 GS is our top seller, 

underlining the enduring appeal of this 

go-anywhere machine, that suits both 

urban riding as much as longer trips, and 

of course the Adventure which is still the 

benchmark for serious challenges off the 

beaten track. 

“With the launch of the BMW G 450 X 

enduro, we have entered yet another new 

segment of the market. The response 

has been positive. With its innovative 

engineering and agile handling the G 

450 X will have a very strong future in 

Australia. 

“After being supply constrained 

on hot stock for much of the year, 

we should see far better supplies 

reaching dealerships in 2009; not to 

mention the arrival of the updated 

four-cylinder K Series bikes, which 

sporty riders will no doubt be 

looking forward to with unmatched 

enthusiasm,” Cameron said. 

LIGHTHOUSE FOUNDATION HONDA HOME OPENS ITS DOORS IN MELBOURNE’S NORTH 

A new Lighthouse Foundation “Honda 

Home” begins operating in late 2008, 

providing long term accommodation in the 

northern region of Melbourne for a group 

of young people who would otherwise be 

homeless. 

The Home is the result of Honda 

Australia making a significant contribution 

over three years to establish a residence 

through the Foundation, the biggest 

contribution the company has ever made 

to one charitable organisation. 

Honda donated funds have been 

earmarked specifically to support, run 

and administer the home which is located 

approximately 30 minutes from the City. 

The residence has now been leased, 

furnished and staffed with a full time carer. 

The Lighthouse Live-in Care Program 

provides disadvantaged young people 

with a stable family environment, living 

together with a full-time carer who 

provides constant emotional and practical 

support. 

Honda Home residents - aged 15 to 22 

- are further supported by volunteers who 

assist them in dealing with daily and long 

term issues. 

While the Lighthouse program is highly 

unique and extremely successful, the level 

of care provided is not possible without 

corporate financial support. 

According to Honda’s Managing 

Director Stuart Strickland, the work the 

Foundation does is incredibly beneficial to 

the community. 

“I’m proud to be part of something that 

gives young people the chance to realise 

their dreams,” said Mr Strickland. 

“When we saw how much demand 

there was for the Lighthouse programs 

in Victoria, we realised one of the most 

directly valuable activities we could do 

would be to create an entirely new home.” 

Youth homelessness is worse now 

than it was 20 years ago, with nearly half 

of all homeless people in Australia under 

24 years old, according to the National 

Youth Commission Inquiry into Youth 

Homelessness conducted earlier this year.

Almost 2/3 of the spark travel between 

the electrodes is along the surface of the 

insulator. 

The length of the spark discharge is 

maximized with only a slight increase in 

the required supplied ignition energy. 

The higher voltage buildup at the center 

electrode before the spark-over results 

in delivering more spark energy into the 

combustion chamber. 

However, this spark plug requires a 

sound ignition system (in good condition) 

for proper operation.

Utilizing a special ground electrode 

design - The spark discharge can 

occur in almost 360 degree perimeter 

at the place with the most optimal 

air fuel composition; which is where 

the ionization of the molecule is most 

easily achieved. This special feature 

ensures that the spark occurs at the best 

possible place for ignition, unlike in the 

conventional spark plug design where the 

spark always occurs in the same confined 

place. Since the air fuel mixture inside the 

combustion chamber is not homogenous 

(has different concentration at different 

places) this results in faster and better 

ignition of each ignition cycle. 

In addition, there is no need for indexing 

of the spark plugs since the plug is 

symmetrical and there is no ground 

electrode restricting the access of the air 

fuel mixture.

Shifting the spark gap deeper inside 

the combustion chamber provides better 

access of the air fuel mixture to the 

point of ignition. Since the flame front 

propagates evenly in all directions the

Better mixture ignition, and thus higher 

combustion speed, and faster flame front 

spread, especially at the beginning of 

combustion, allows better fuel energy 

utilization. The subsequent increase 

in medium effective pressure in the 

engine cylinder and balancing of values 

of medium effective pressure during 

individual working cycles contribute to 

increased engine power.

A rugged mains-fed vehicle servicing worklight that 

combines the safety of nine volt power with the clarity of 

a super-wide 70-degree LED beam has been released in 

Australia by GO Distribution. 

The HEMITECH 4 LED light – part of a new series of 

HEMITECH work lights and cord reels - features a unique 

hemispherical lens to deliver a powerful beam equivalent to a 

100 w incandescent bulb, but with no hot spots or halos in its
