"Semi-detached dwelling" means the whole of a dwelling ho<strong>use</strong> that is divided<br />
vertically into two separate dwelling units, each of which has an independent entrance.<br />
"Sewer Service" means a system of pipes that disposes of ho<strong>use</strong>hold sewage other<br />
than on the lot;<br />
"Sex-Aid Shop" includes any establishment or place for the purpose of retail trade<br />
where 10% or more of the value of the total stock in trade in any such establishment or<br />
place is comprised of articles relating to or portrayed as relating to sexual activities;<br />
“Sign” means any structure, device, light, painting or other representation or<br />
natural object which is <strong>use</strong>d to identify, advertise or attract attention to any<br />
object, place, activity, person, institution, organization, firm, group, commodity,<br />
profession, enterprise, industry or business, or which display or include any<br />
letter, work, model, flag, pennant, insignia, device or representation <strong>use</strong>d as an<br />
announcement, direction or advertisement, and which is intended to be seen from<br />
off the premises or from a parking lot, except any "signs" which is affixed to the<br />
inside of a window or glass door or regulated under HRM By-<strong>law</strong> S-800. (RC-Sep<br />

"Single Family Dwelling" means the whole of a dwelling ho<strong>use</strong> occupied <strong>by</strong> not more<br />
than one family;<br />
“Shipping Container” means a container originally designed for <strong>use</strong> as a means of<br />
storing and transporting cargo via ship, rail, air or truck.”<br />
"Special Care Home" means a building or part of a building in which<br />
accommodation, together with nursing, supervisory or personal care is provided or is<br />
available for four or more persons with social, health, emotional, mental or physical<br />
handicaps or problems, and only such building or part thereof as is licensed <strong>by</strong> the<br />
Homes for Special Care Act, or the Children's Services Act, or operated as a<br />
community correctional center under the provisions of the Penitentiary Act of Canada,<br />
but does not include a building or part thereof maintained <strong>by</strong> a person to whom the<br />
residents are related <strong>by</strong> blood or marriage, a public hospital, maternity hospital,<br />
sanatorium, jail, prison, reformatory, hotel or hostel;<br />
"Stacked Attached Housing" means 3 or more dwelling units that are horizontally or<br />
vertically attached and which have a principal access to the exterior ground level either<br />
directly from the unit or <strong>by</strong> means of a staircase shared <strong>by</strong> no more than 6 units.<br />
"Street" means any public street, road, highway or travelled way or portion thereof.<br />
"Street Line" means the boundary of the street.<br />
"Structure" means everything that is built or constructed of parts joined together and<br />
includes a building and an erection;<br />
“Townho<strong>use</strong>” means a dwelling unit in a townho<strong>use</strong> building which has two or more<br />
independent entrances and a front and rear yard.<br />
