Home
My name is Pippa and I like to design
things. (I also like coffee…)
My true love is interiors and I believe
everyone should be able to live in
a space that they love. Ever since I
can remember I have been creating
concepts and mood boards and
lusting over all things interior. Since
then, I’ve been to university, worked in
fashion, property and interior design.
Pip Interiors aims to act as a friendly
and simple design consultation service.
Whether it be practical advice, home
inspiration or a full scheme. I am here
to help in a no-strings-attached way.
Gone are the days of intimidating
interior designers, E-design and
styling is fast becoming the number
one alternative to traditional interior
design services. I try to place myself
comfortably in the middle, having as
much or as little input as required by
my clients. But ultimately designing
a room or a scheme you will love, all
within a budget that doesn’t burn a
hole in your pocket. Be this digitally,
or on paper – which is where it
normally all starts.
If you are interested in how Pip
Interiors can help you, be it with
styling, a refresh, moving into a new
home, or perhaps a total revamp
(requiring the full works) I would love
to hear from you.
You’ll be hearing a little bit more
from me as we’ve got some exciting
issues coming up in the next few
months, so watch this space. For now,
here are some concepts based around
all the things we love about interiors.
ARTea – a reputation to be proud of
When James Swansborough-
Smith took over ARTea Room in
Wakefield Country Courtyard, he was
determined to build a reputation as
a venue for delicious home-made
food and drinks. Watching customers
return again and again, he has proof
that he has achieved his aim. As
its name suggests, local artwork
adorns the walls and an eye-catching
mural created from tea has revived
a little-used corner of the tearoom.
Mismatched chairs and tables and
quirky gifts complete the perfect
setting for a quaint tearoom.
James, a Pru Leith School of Food
and Wine trained chef, has developed
a menu that offers more than cream
teas. Light bites, heartier meals and
appetising cakes are all available.
The early morning breakfast platters,
delicious sandwiches, jacket potatoes,
soup and one pot wonders are
drawing hungry customers with their
flavour, quality and value.
The home-made cakes will
challenge the most sweet-tooth
customer’s decision-making skills and
luxury cream tea lovers will enjoy
the addition of an indulgent glass
of sparkling wine. Coeliac diners will
welcome the gluten free scones.
And thirsty visitors, impressed by
the selection of loose-leaf teas,
are delighted to find they are also
available to buy for home.
James has firmly stamped his mark
on this must-go-to tea-room – pop
over and see for yourselves.
Animal services
Lost and found
RSPCA Milton Keynes & North Bucks branch is always busy
trying to reunite lost and found pets with their families. If
you lose a pet, make sure you visit their website where you
will find lots of help on what actions to take.
Microchips are probably the most effective way to
reunite you with your pet. Now a legal requirement for
dogs, it can be crucial for reuniting any pet with its owners.
Remember though, you
must also update your
details if you move home.
Many pets never find their
owners simply because the
microchip information is no
longer correct.
The RSCPA always scan for a chip to find the owner as
soon as a lost animal is brought to their attention. If no
chip is found they advertise the animal on social media and
where possible provide it with shelter and care.
For more information on lost pets or the animals in their care: call the RSPCA Milton Keynes & North Bucks on
Is your rabbit at risk of Flystrike this summer?
Summer is great news for our rabbits,
as they can get outside more often to
exercise and enjoy the grass. However,
during the summer months, rabbits
are at increased risk of suffering from
Flystrike (Myiasis). Flystrike occurs
when flies are attracted to damp,
smelly fur. This is usually caused by
faeces accumulation or urine scalding
around the rabbit’s backend. The
attracted flies lay their eggs on the
rabbit and when the maggots hatch
(which happens within hours) they
eat away at the rabbits flesh, causing
serious problems very quickly.
The good news is that Flystrike can
be prevented by taking a few simple
precautions:
1) Remove all wet and dirty bedding
daily.
2) Inspect your rabbit twice daily –
focusing especially on the backend
to make sure there is no urine or
faecal staining and that your rabbit
is clean and dry. If you see any urine
or faeces then wash and dry the
area. Seek help from your vet if your
rabbit is having problems keeping
himself clean.
3) Disinfect your cage weekly.
4) Apply a topical treatment regularly
throughout the summer months to
repel flies and prevent any eggs
that are laid on your rabbit from
hatching – please contact your
vet for more advice about these
treatments.
Vet Kate from Cherry Lane surgery
says, ‘’If you notice any maggots on
your rabbit please contact your vet
immediately, as this is an emergency.’’
Other signs of Flystrike you may
notice include irritation, loss of
appetite and lethargy.
We hope that you and your rabbits
are enjoying the sunshine and by
following the above advice you can
help prevent Flystrike in your rabbits
this summer.
Have fun and get fit with ECKA Newton Longville and Wolverton
Students from 5 years upwards,
any fitness or skill level will enjoy
training with Sensei Lauren and her
team. Classes are tailored to ensure
beginners will feel as welcome as
experienced members. This exciting
sport promotes fitness, mental
awareness and self-control. It also
expects respect while encouraging
friendship.
Students take part in full contact
karate, using full safety equipment
during sparring to reduce risk of injury.
Mitesh, a student at Karate MK, chose
the sport because it was something
he and his children could easily do
together. He explained, “The club has
a real family feel and it has become
part of our lives, rather than simply
another after-school activity.”
The club offers family time while
learning new skills and techniques and
getting fit. It also brings so much more
– mental agility, technical skills and
fun. One of Mitesh’s funniest moments
was watching his 8-year-old son doing
a jumping back fist on a black belt
adult. Mitesh has also seen the sport
build confidence in his children and
watching them complete their first
freeform routines in front of the whole
class was one of his best moments.
To get in touch and book a class call Sensei Lauren
Going natural for summer
Alchemy Therapy Centre in Old
Stratford launched the new
range of Mii make-up earlier
this year. It’s designed
to give wearers
confidence in
whatever they’re
doing – work,
getting married,
prom ball or
simply meeting
friends.
Holly Jenkins
says the minimalist
neutral look is the strong
influence for summer and
she is excited! There are
plenty of nudes and natural
shades in the range but you
can also have fun with colour.
Eye shadows take on every look
imaginable – 50s pastel, subtle smoky, frosty and even
80s bright and radiant. During the day paint your lips with
softer shades like peach or raspberry but at night you can
go red!
Limit the use of powders
and use yellow toned
bronzers to highlight your
features.
Relief from pain
Pain is extremely debilitating and no one treatment
fits all. A chiropractor aims to reduce pain, improve
function and increase mobility.
Chiropractors use gentle, specific spinal adjustment
to free joints in the spine that are not moving
properly, often in combination with specific soft tissue
release techniques and exercise. They consider how
musculoskeletal disorders affect your nervous system
and general health. Their assessment includes looking
at your physical, emotional and social wellbeing.
While chiropractors are especially interested in the
neck and back, they are trained to diagnose, treat
and prevent problems with bones, joints and muscles
throughout your body. They can help with hip and knee
pain, shoulder and elbow pain and even headaches
and migraine. This is more than a do-to-you treatment;
you may need to follow advice to work on your posture
and lifestyle and exercise regimes. Satisfied chiropractic
patients say that the results are worth the extra effort.
Wellbeing
Take care of that perfect smile
A good teeth-cleaning routine should begin as soon as
your new baby’s first tooth pops through. A regular visit
to a dentist is also an excellent way to prevent decay and
identify any problems at an early stage.
Help your child to clean his/her teeth in the morning and
before bed for about two minutes. Dentists prefer fluoride
toothpaste, as this helps to prevent and control tooth
decay. Your child should spit out excess toothpaste but not
rinse with lots of water. Brush your child’s teeth until you are
confident that your child is doing it right without help.
Some dentists recommend applying fissure sealants to
your child’s permanent back teeth, to keep germs and food
particles out of the grooves and protect them from decay.
Fluoride varnishes can give further protection.
Children should avoid sweets and fizzy drinks and never
consume them regularly or in large amounts. Fizzy drinks –
including sugar-free ones – contain acids which can erode
teeth. Fruit and raw vegetables are good snacks, whereas
dried fruit is high in sugar and should only be given as
a dessert. Juices and smoothies also contain sugars and
acids, so remember – small quantities only.
Water and plain milk are the best drinks and plain
popcorn makes a great snack. Your child may not like it but
there is no better way to protect their teeth and they will
thank you in years to come.
New teeth bring confidence
You can lose the confidence to smile if
you have missing or broken teeth and it
can even be a challenge to seek advice.
There are many reasons why you
may have lost teeth – an accident,
disease or even genetics. Let the
DaVinci team replace your missing
teeth – it will help you to look better
and your mouth should feel like it is
working normally again. There are
now a variety of choices to easily
achieve this.
At Da Vinci Dental Clinic, the
dentists believe implants are the
next best thing to having your own
natural teeth. As experts in dental
implantology, they use the MED 3D
computer-guided implantation system.
This 3D system produces an incredibly
precise template for the type and
size of your new implant, as well as
helping the dentist to place it in the
best position for maximum stability.
An additional benefit of this
approach is that treatment and
recovery are far quicker, less painful
and with reduced swelling and
bruising. Some people even go back
to work the next day! The incision and
exploration associated with traditional
methods are no longer required.
Implant prices start from £590 and
0% credit finance is available for the
following 6-24 months, subject to status.
The Care Quality Commission oversee
the work of Da Vinci Dental Clinic. The
dental team are registered with the
General Dental Council and insured for
SSTS performed their first
full Shakespeare play,
The Merchant of Venice,
in a truly magical space.
Caz Tricks, SSTS Artistic
Director, successfully
led her acting team to
receive rave reviews:
‘It’s not a play in a theatre – it’s an experience. Excellent acting in a superb
location. It draws you in. Paints pictures.’ Kevin
‘Had a really lovely evening immersed in this story. Great performances
enhanced by the setting and little musical moments – just wonderful – well done
to everyone!’ Wendy
‘Felt I was part of the play and really had to hold myself back from joining in
at times!’ Pat
‘We had a wonderful evening ... loved the setting and the closeness of the
actors.’ Ian
Caz, who has been directing SSTS plays for the last couple years, said, “I like
theatre to be intimate, for the audience to be in the moment of the play and in
the Mason’s wonderful Temple we could achieve that.”
Congratulations Caz and team and here’s to your next big production in 2019.
A Breast Cancer Charity Concert
Saturday, 30 September
Boobs & Brass in concert with
Bradwell Silver Band will link female
players from across the country to
showcase big-band numbers while
raising money for Cancer Research.
Brian Keech, Musical Director of
Bradwell Silver Band commented
“This is a truly exciting project for
Bradwell Silver Band. The opportunity
to play alongside Boobs and Brass
momentous!”
This June The Music Day Brass
On Saturday, 17 June the amazing
Brooke Layla wowed the judges on
The Voice Kids with her interpretation
of Running up that Hill – one of Kate
Bush’s most successful releases.
As her parents looked on
slightly nervously, Brooke’s rousing
performance saw both Danny and
Will.i.am spin their chairs. She
delighted the audience and all three
judges were amazed by her talent
and the powerful voice of one so
young.
The tension rose further as Brooke
had to choose between Will.i.am,
a judge since the show began and
Danny Jones, lead vocalist and guitarist
with McFly. Will.i.am was triumphant as
Brooke made her selection. We all now
look forward to seeing what happens
next as we wish Brooke the best of luck
in The Voice Kids.
Community
A resounding success
The Willis Pipe Organ Restoration and Reach-Out project
is now complete. After three years of restoration, the organ
with its Victorian Heritage will look and sound magnificent
long into the future.
As part of the restoration project, a fascinating history
has been compiled, which can be viewed on- line or as a
DVD. Volunteers will provide on-going educational visits
and musical events. Post restoration they have already
organised 26 events using the organ with over 3,000
participants. They have also trained volunteers to support
Education and Community Music activities.
The support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, which
amounted to £82,700, has been fundamental in achieving
this goal and Fr Ross Northing said, “The Rector,
Churchwardens and Parochial Church Council are very
grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund, the huge number of
volunteer fundraisers and the countless people who have
supported fund-raising events.”
A 3-day Pipe Organ Festival is planned between 8–10
September as part of Heritage Open Days. It will include a
Silent Movie with pipe organ, a musical Teddy Bears’ Picnic,
Hands on Our Willis!, a Gala Organ Concert, a Heritage
exhibition, a lunchtime recital and a requests recital.
money for local charities like Emily’s Star, Harry’s
Rainbow, The Hollie Foundation, Rhiley’s Smile
and MacIntyre.
These charities work tirelessly to support local
people and their needs.
In addition they are collecting tinned food to
support The Food Bank in MK.
MKFM will also be at this fun event and so
you’ll be guaranteed some great music. With
popcorn and candyfloss, organic ice-creams and
other local foods and drinks, what’s not to love?
Hope to see you there!
Asbestos in the home
Until its ban in 1999, the building
industry used asbestos for a variety of
purposes -fireproofing, insulation and
roofing. Its ban came about because
of the harmful fibres that are released
when it is damaged. Without damage
it is safe but fibres released pose
a risk of lung cancer, asbestosis or
mesothelioma.
Asbestos is found in everyday
items like artex, floor tiles, rainwater
pipes and garage roofs. Simple
home improvements or accidents
can damage it – a burst water pipe
could attack the coating on your artex
releasing fibres.
Home insurance only covers
removal of asbestos as part of a
damage claim, rather than removal
when identified. Asbestos in good
condition should be monitored for
damage and repaired or isolated if
damaged. Removal, however is the
only permanent solution. A specialist
will normally locate your asbestos
and take samples for analysis at an
approved laboratory. Asbestos should
only ever be handled by a competent
professional who complies with
current Health and Safety legislation.
Any concerns call Paul on 01604 240507 or 07738 786572 • www.uk-asbestos.co.uk
Reduce your risk
Electrical faults are a common cause of domestic fire and
while rewiring isn’t cheap it could cost you less in the long run.
You should rewire or upgrade your electrics every
25-30 years to bring them in line with current standards.
Damaged, worn and out-of-date wiring and sockets as well
as overuse of extension leads can cause overloading and
risk of fire.
Tell-tale signs suggesting a rewire include fuses blowing
and sockets overheating or not working. Evidence of
vermin like rats or mice is also an indicator. A rewire should
include new cables, sockets and fuse box. If you haven’t
had a rewire since 1984 your electrician may also need to
install an earth cable to prevent risk of an electric shock.
Under current building regulations home owners should
have their electrical installations tested every 10 years and
landlords every 5 years.
Those annoying
little drips…
If you notice water dripping from your tap spout the washer
or ceramic disc/cartridge may be damaged and need
replacing. Water leaks around the diverter leaver on your
shower mixer tap or around the base of the swivel spout or
around the spindle of your sink tap are likely to be caused
by a faulty gland. Wear and tear, back pressure or lack of
grease may be the cause.
Before carrying out any work on your taps always turn
off the water supply at the stop cock or the isolating valve
for the relevant tap. Once turned off, turn on your taps to
empty the water in the system, then put the plug in the sink
hole to prevent anything falling down the wastepipe.
If you don’t know what you are doing or don’t have the
right tools you could cause further damage and it may be
cheaper to call a plumber.
From leaks to new toilets, bathrooms, kitchens or
central heating issues you can get your problem
sorted by calling local plumber. See page 34 for some
great local plumbers.
Overseas travel tips with the sites you will need
1 A European Health Insurance Card
gives free or discounted medical
treatment in state-run hospitals in
any European Union country, plus
a few others. The card is free and
should be in date – keep it with
you to use in emergencies. Apply
through the official site www.ehic.
org.uk or you may be charged.
2 Check visa and other entry
requirements. They take time to
confirm and have a cost. The USA
offers the ESTA visa-waiver scheme
and you may need a ‘chipped’
passport. Apply at https://esta.
cbp.dhs.gov/esta/esta.html.
Ensure your travel insurance
provider covers your destination
or they may refuse to pay out for
issues if declared unsafe. Get advice
from foreign travel advice service
www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice
3 The UK licence is valid in the EU
but you will need an international
driving permit for around 140
countries including the USA, India
and Thailand. These cost £5.50
and should only be obtained from
the Post Office, the RAC or the
AA. Get to know the local driving
regulations before you go. Use
the AA website for information on
driving laws by country – www.
theaa.com/european-breakdowncover/driving-in-europe/countryby-country.
Some European cities
have restricted driving times,
emissions charges and require
emission stickers (vignette). It can
take 30 days to apply for a vignette
and you may be fined without it.
Stony Stratford in Bloom
Britain in Bloom Judging – volunteers
are preparing for the judges to review
their hard work beginning with the It’s
your Neighbourhood Groups in Stony
Stratford on 10 July.
The Parks Trust Youth Rangers
helped launch the Britain in Bloom
year by planting primroses and
cowslips at the North End Pond
area. This also contributes to the
RHS theme Greening Grey Britain for
Wildlife.
Change-over
At the beginning of June, Stony
Stratford in Bloom and the Stony
Stratford Business Association placed
their summer sizzling red and orange
flowers into baskets with white and
blues into planters.
Events
The Annual SSIB Plant Sale and York
House Coffee and Cake morning
made a record £625 for SSIB funds.
The Town Crier let everyone know
while the bard celebrated in verse.
Stony Stratford’s thespians entertained
visitors who also enjoyed cakes and
coffee. Children planted York House’s
new sharing bed.
Hobby Horse Nursery children
celebrated the magnificent bluebells
in the Bluebell Wood. Children
also enjoyed the hanging basket
workshops funded by MK Community
Foundation at The Big Lunch in Stony
and the Fuller’s Slade party. The gold
and blue colour scheme reflects the
50 Years of Milton Keynes.
St Mary and St Giles school children
added Mediterranean flavours to
this year’s seeds – tomatoes and
courgettes as well as aubergines and
red peppers.
Mouth-watering English Cherries – luscious and local!
Make sure you pay a visit to the
English Cherry Co at Aspley Guise
this summer. For 3-4 weeks between
July and August you can savour the
deliciously mouth-watering flavours of
8 varieties of cherry.
At the farm shop you can learn
about the growth and harvest of this
marvellous fruit, perhaps even swap
recipes with other customers. This
season is likely to start from around 10
July and the shop opens daily during
this period from 9am-6pm. If you can’t
make it to the shop, keep an eye open
at local outlets and in the lay-bys for
places to stop and buy.
Three generations of the family
manage the 2,000 cherry trees, from
tending to them to marketing and
selling the product at the end. For the
most up-to-date information follow
twitter@englishcherry or sign up to
their seasonal reminder service.
The size, quality and taste of the fruit
has to be experienced to be believed.
Gardening
Ants in your plants!
Ants don’t actually damage our
plants and trees, it is the destructive
sap-sucking aphids that they protect
who cause the problem. During
the summer they are a nuisance –
building their nests on our lawns and
disturbing the soil around the roots of
our shrubs, not to mention the bites
they can deliver, but they do little else.
Ants feed on insects but the
honeydew excreted by aphids is
their favourite food. As a result ants
protect them from ladybirds and
other predators. The aphids can then
happily munch their way through our
leaves.
Destroy a nest and another queen
ant will take over and establish even
more nests. Powders and other
controls have limited effect, as the
nests go deep into the soil. Best
advice is to leave them alone!
Small gardens
Turning your
garden into a room
Gardens are becoming complete rooms featuring
outdoor kitchens and relaxing, ambient spaces. You
can fit your own sink, weatherproof kitchen storage,
grills and pizza ovens. Garden furniture has taken
on a new lease of life with natural looking materials,
clever storage, reduced maintenance and lower
costs. Furniture and accessories are not just functional
though – colour and style is everything. Look for sofas,
swing chairs, softer retro, vintage and natural styles
in wicker, rattan or wrought iron. Complement your
seating with coffee tables, ottomans and bean bags.
Create magic and romance with colourful fairy lights,
fire pits and candles; they don’t just add warmth.
Install lighting that highlights the structure of your
plants. Outdoor rugs and sleekly designed seating
with cushions should come in pastel, natural and
fresher yellow and fuchsias colours for an up to the
minute look. Once your plants are in place your room
will be complete.
Miniature gardens will bring life and colour to your new
room, as well as coping in shade. Fill a large container
with tiny trees and shrubs like lemon cypress, boxwood,
euonymus japonica and carex berggenii. They’re easy
to manage and have minimal growth.
With dry weather, choose drought-resistant plants
that require minimal effort but give colour and structure
to your garden. Lavender and jasmine bring beautiful
aromas, grasses like cortaderia selloana or pennisetum
alopecuroides offer sound and colour. Fill your borders
with amaranthus (love lies bleeding) and calendula
officinalis (marigold). The RHS have more great ideas.
To add sophistication and glamour fill spaces, soften
structures and add colour. Pack window boxes with
bulbs to brighten the wall and pop plants like sedum
on your table tops. Place terracotta pots with flowers
and shrubs around the garden. Use vertical gardening
ideas to impress your friends – hang jars filled with
herbs on a wall or drill a hole in a plumbing pipe,
stand it upright and fill it with strawberries or trailing
tomatoes, securing it against breezes.
Keep cool as the weather warms
Most cars come with air-conditioning
to make driving on a hot summer’s
day more bearable. Your car is cooled
and humidity reduced to your desired
level of comfort.
Your air-conditioning system should
be regularly checked and serviced
to keep it working efficiently. Most
manufacturers recommend the system
is recharged with gas and lubricant at
least every 2 years. With about 10% of
the gas passing from the system every
year, your car’s air-conditioning could
warm up. If cold air stops blowing out
through the vents or it becomes very
noisy you may have a problem.
Recharging is simple; it involves
removing the old gas and oil from
the system and replacing it with fresh
refrigerant and lubricant. A vacuum
test should also be carried out to check
for cracks or damage that will cause
a leak. In addition, a simple de-bug
and replacement of filters will remove
any unpleasant smells that develop if
bacteria begin to grow in the unit.
This isn’t normally part of a routine
service so book your air-con check today.
Potholes
Potholes can damage cars and bicycles. The
road controlling authority has a legal duty to
maintain roads to a fit standard and you could
make a claim for damage if repairs have not
been carried out. You must prove that damage
to your car was caused by the impact.
• Report the pothole – it must be at least
40mm deep.
• Tell your insurer – whether you claim or
not you must report the damage and it
may affect your no claims bonus.
• Take pictures & notes – when it’s safe,
close-up and distance photos showing
the pothole, as well as damage to your
car. Record the time and date, the
location and weather conditions. Provide
details of any witnesses.
• Measure – the hole’s depth, shape and
circumference except on a motorway.
• Receipts & mechanics report – To show
work required.
• Make a claim – check with the relevant
authority.
Nostalgia at its best
Towcester Garage is possibly
the oldest purpose – built
garage in the UK. It opened
in 1908 and continues to
offer the same customerfriendly,
honest approach.
Steve Fowle bought the
business 11 years ago and he
loves the nostalgia and the
fame that the garage boasts.
Ferrari and Maserati Grand Prix cars were regulars. In the 1970s, Terry
Kaby (the previous owner’s brother) and Bob Freebrough used it for
their rally cars. RAC rally champion Timo Makinen called it the shed!
Steve has stayed loyal to the original external look. Step inside and
you’ll find a garage full of the latest diagnostic software and equipment
essential for modern cars. It offers repairs, servicing and MOTs for all
makes of cars and vans even those within the manufacturer’s warranty.
Steve’s customers are equally loyal – since 2003, Steve Jones has
taken his VW Passat to the Silverstone Garage, also owned by Steve. It’s
had 48 services, 8 cam belt changes, it’s driven over half a million miles –
