ELLISVILLE
Ellisville tables appointment
to fill council seat
The Ellisville City Council voted, on
June 21, to table for future consideration
the appointment to fill the late Gary Voss’s
unexpired council term. Voss passed away
on May 23.
Voss was well-respected by his fellow
councilmembers and the mayor, who said
he also thought of Voss as a friend.
“My wife always joked around and said,
‘Your best friend is 76 years old and twice
your elder,’” Mayor Adam Paul said at the
June 21 meeting. “In the last five-and-ahalf
years, we’ve done a lot of great things
for the city. He poured me a drink when I
was thirsty, he told me a joke when I was
sad. He was my 76-year-old best friend.”
Voss had served on the council for four
years and was recently re-elected to serve
a second term. According to City Clerk
Leigh Dohack, Voss was about one week
into his second term as a councilmember.
Voss’s term would have officially expired
in April 2021.
“He was a business owner, he owned
West County Lanes, he was a hall-of-fame
bowler, he was a father, he was a council
member and he was my mayor pro tem,”
Paul said. “He was my boy. I loved Councilmember
Voss and I’ll miss his jokes and
solving the world’s problems at the end of
a bowling alley.”
While the council moved to consider
possible candidates at a later date, Paul
appointed Councilmember Dan Duffy
[District 3] as deputy mayor pro tem and
Councilmember Cindy Pool [District 3] as
the successor to Duffy as a deputy mayor
pro tem.
Stop sign to be erected at
‘awkward’ intersection
At its June 21 meeting, the Ellisville
City Council voted in favor of an ordinance
that would amend the traffic code
and add a stop sign at the intersection of
Tulip and East Meadow lanes, located
a short distance off Manchester Road.
Sponsored by Councilmember Cindy
Pool [District 3], the bill passed with a
6-0 vote in favor, with Mayor Adam Paul
voting.
Currently, the only signage that exists at
the three-way intersection is a yield sign
between Tulip and East Meadow lanes.
However, the city previously was made
aware of a traffic hazard at that intersection,
which prompted the June 21 council
decision.
“I’m not aware of any actual accidents,
but it is an awkward intersection,” City
Manager Bill Schwer said. “Especially for
people from out of town who aren’t familiar
with the area, there have been a few
near-hits and close misses.”
Replacing the existing yield sign with a
stop sign would effectively make the area
a three-way intersection subject to typical
Missouri right-of-way rules, where individuals
traveling from Tulip Lane to East
Meadow Lane would be required to come
to a full stop and yield to ongoing traffic
from East Meadow Lane.
According to Schwer, the city hopes to
have the stop sign erected and on the books
for police enforcement within the next 30
days.
Amending the traffic code is standard
procedure every time the city votes to
place a stop sign in a new location, he said.
“It needs to be on our books, otherwise
we can’t have the police enforce it,”
Schwer said.
MANCHESTER
Missouri and England are
‘Manchesters United’
At the regular Manchester Board of
Aldermen meeting on June 19, Mayor
Dave Willson presented a banner that will
be forwarded to the municipality’s international
sister city of Manchester, U.K.
The city of Manchester wants to show
solidarity with its namesake city following
a suicide bombing attack that left over 20
people dead and dozens more injured last
month in England.
The banner depicting both cities was
signed by city staff members and area residents
to show their ongoing support. Along
with a letter from Mayor Dave Willson, the
banner will be sent to Manchester, U.K.
