Voit, who was

in the 22nd round [665th player
overall] in 2013 out of Missouri State
University, is a Wildwood native. He
joined the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday,
June 25 and got his first crack at bigleague
action.
“It’s what I’ve been waiting for since
I was a little kid, man,” said Voit before
the game as he sat in the locker room.
“Growing up, you know, being a Cardinals
fan, coming to Busch every year, I
don’t know, I’ve been shaking since last

night. It’s a great feeling.”
In a nice touch, Freese, a former Cardinal
star who was playing third base for
the Pirates on Sunday night, sent Voit a
congratulatory note before the game.
The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Voit climbed
his way through the Cardinals system
without ever being considered a top
prospect. However, he drew attention
after winning the Texas League Home
Run Derby last summer and has ranked
among the Pacific Coast League’s best
in several offensive categories this
season.
He was named the Cardinals Minor
League Player of the Month in April
when he batted .360 and swatted five of
his 12 home runs on the season. He is
batting .327 against right-handed pitching
this season, .304 against lefties and
has provided a .333 [23-for-69] mark
with 32 RBI while batting with runners
in scoring position.
He was drafted by the Kansas City
Royals in the 32nd round of the 2009
Major League Baseball Draft but did not
sign, choosing Missouri State instead.
“I’m confident in my abilities, and I’m
ready to give it a go,” Voit said on June
25. “I’ve been waiting for this opportunity
for a long time, and I’m going to go
out there with a killer attitude and, you
know, hit bombs and doubles.”
