Crestview Middle exceeds
expectations in robotics
Crestview Middle’s VEX Robotics teams,
with guidance from mentor and recent Marquette
grad Mandar Bhoyar, left a lasting
impression at a robotics competition this
spring at Mineral Area College. Their competition
included 44 high school teams.
Seventh-grade Academic STRETCH
teacher Dr. Robin Lady said Crestview
robotics organizers decided to do the VEX
program, which is the type of robotics that
goes along with Project Lead The Way curriculum.
“We did some fundraising with some nonprofits
and parents, and decided we were
going to have 20 kids and two teams,” said
Lady. “The first day, 70 showed up. After
that I had 50, consistently, every day. So we
decided on five teams and all five teams did
well, and we won three awards, including
the highest award.”
The Hydrowaves won the highest award
for excellence. The Techno Wizards won
the award for robot design. The Circuit
Breakers won the judge’s award.
Christ, Prince of Peace,
dominates STEM competition
The U.S. Army Educational Outreach
Program announced the winners in the 15th
annual eCYBERMISSION competition
– one of several science, technology, engineering
and mathematics [STEM] initiatives
they sponsor.
In the state competition, Christ, Prince of
Peace School had three sixth-grade teams
finish strong. First place went to The Psycho
Recyclers, which included Carly Haid,
Emily Griege and Gracie Ruyle. The Compostables,
which included Peter Underwood,
Grant Kuhn and Andrew Marty, placed
second. The MANA Planter team received
an Honorable Mention and included Annie
Mortland, Nola Burgener, Abby Hickman
and Maddie Medler.
eCYBERMISSION, administered by the
National Science Teachers Association, promotes
self-discovery and enables students to
recognize the real-life applications of STEM.
The program challenges students in grades
six through nine to develop solutions to realworld
problems in their local communities.
Students compete for state, regional and
national awards for up to $9,000 in U.S. EE
Savings Bonds, valued at maturity.
Robotics students compete
in world championship
The John Burroughs School’s robotics
team advanced as the only St. Louis team
to qualify for the FIRST Tech Challenge
[FTC] World Championships. They recently
competed in a field of 128 teams from 10
countries at Union Station in St. Louis.
The Burroughs team 4211 “The Bombers”
[along with alliance partners team 10294
The Edge from Wisconsin and team 3537
MechaHampsters from Indiana] finished
fourth in the world championship. Team
4211 was ranked 10th out of 64 teams in the
Edison Division after nine rounds of qualifying
matches.
The Bombers also were nominated for the
Think Award, which is for the best engineering
notebook. Only six teams were nominated
out of 128 at Worlds. Even though the
Bombers didn’t win the Think Award, they
are among 0.02 percent of FTC teams globally
to be nominated.
To earn its place at worlds, the Burroughs
team competed throughout the state and
region, most recently at the North Super-
Regional Championship in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, where its robot, Sharpie Bot 2.0, won
the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award. Earlier
this season, the team earned a variety of
awards at two Missouri qualifying tournaments
and at the Missouri State Championship,
held at Missouri University of Science
and Technology in Rolla.
As in all FIRST competitions, the winning
teams’ robots were those judged most
capable of fulfilling tasks by virtue of their
design, construction and programming.
Grannie Annie authors, artists
gather for festival
Twelve students from five area schools
were among the 25 young people recently
honored at The Grannie Annie’s Family
Stories Festival at the Missouri History
Museum.
The event was presented in collaboration
with the Missouri History Museum and in
conjunction with publication of Grannie
Annie, Vol. 12, released in May in paperback,
eBook and PDF. Other honored students
came from New York, Alabama and
other parts of Missouri.
As part of the program, authors whose
stories were published in Grannie Annie,
Vol. 12, read their stories aloud. In addition,
young artists talked about how they decided
to illustrate stories as they did. In all, 20
local students were featured in the recent
publication.
Complete details about The Grannie
Annie, including details on how to submit
a work for consideration and published stories
and illustrations can be found online at
