So why would we turn off our GPS system if it’s so vital, valuable and real?
Well, most children come into the world being very loved and nurtured. Really, what
does an infant really require? In the beginning, there’s not that much to do. Parents give
the bottle or breast, bathe the baby and change the diaper. (Yes, I know some of them
are poopy!) Anyway, at this point the child gets to feel only the energy that’s wonderful
because it’s nurturing and caring—and they are received for who they BE. Their GPS
system is intact.
In every child’s life however, comes the defining moment when that energy changes
and the GPS system switches off.
Here’s how it happens….
Picture an infant sitting happily in her high chair. Mom serves her a plate of spaghetti
and meatballs with lots of sauce. Now the little girl has just started playing with gravity.
She sees a “ball” on her plate. She throws it. And the tomato-sauce covered meatball
hits Mom’s new designer wallpaper.
Mom blows up. “My new wallpaper! It’s ruined! Look what you did!” She loses it. And so
does the little girl. Her world has changed dramatically. The cooing and loving has
turned to anger and wrongness.
The little girl decides she is wrong. In the moment she was just being her pure self, she
did something wrong to anger Mom. She forms a conclusion and makes a decision that
being ME and playful is a wrongness that gets me that energy. Therefore, I am never
going to be me and allow that energy to happen again.
She starts to cut off pieces of herself. Because, she thinks, if I am too playful, if I am
being ME, this will happen again.
Let’s join our little girl a few years later. She loves to sing. She’s discovered her voice.
