represent Foundation Academy’s Class of 2017
as valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

Advocating the Collaborative Approach
Orlando Attorney Richard West of the
West Family Law Group is recognized
on a regular basis for his expertise
in to helping couples through the
difficulties of divorce and other Family
Law matters.
Now the Florida Bar Association is
tapping into his sound principles and
expertise, appointing him, for the
second year, to be co-chair of a Florida
Bar Association ethics committee for
2017-2018.
Richard will help lead the Ad Hoc
Bounds of Advocacy Committee in
updating the original Florida Bounds
of Advocacy, which he helped draft 10
years ago. He will also be lecturing on
this topic to Family lawyers attending
the Marital and Family Law Review
course, which will be held here in
Orlando in January of 2018.
“I’m honored to be appointed to help
lead an important committee that
deals with ethics specific to this field,”
Richard said.
“Family Law attorneys work with
couples often going through the most
challenging times of their lives,” he
said. “When a couple is involved in a
divorce, it affects not just them but
their children. Family lawyers need to
hold themselves to a higher ethical
standard than the minimum standards
required by the Rules of Professional
Responsibility.” The Bounds of
Advocacy are non-binding aspirational
standards for Family lawyers.
Richard was selected as Orlando’s
2016 Family Lawyer of the Year by Best
Lawyers in America. This was the second
time he was selected for this distinction.
Richard also was named one of the Top
100 Lawyers in Florida by Super Lawyers
for 2015 and 2016. He has also been
recognized for more than a decade by his
peers in Florida Trend’s Legal Elite, Best
Lawyers and Best Law Firms in America,
and Best Lawyers in Orlando magazine.
THE COLLABORATIVE APPROACH
Richard, who is a frequent speaker on
Family Law issues, is also a recognized
leader in Collaborative Law and recently
delivered a lecture to the Florida
Academy of Collaborative Professionals
in Tampa, at that organization’s annual
statewide meeting.
In a divorce, the Collaborative
approach promotes low-conflict,
mutually beneficial negotiations outside
the courtroom, frequently providing
a quicker resolution, lower cost,
and more privacy and control for the
divorcing couple. Couples work toward
acceptable financial settlements and
appropriate custody arrangements.
Richard’s list of credentials is long
and impressive. He is a Fellow of the
prestigious American Academy of
Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) and a
past president of the Florida Chapter
of the AAML. He is also a Fellow of
the International Academy of Family
Lawyers.
His law firm colleague, Shane Herbert,
was recently named to the 2017 Rising
Star list by Florida Super Lawyers,
an honor given to no more than 2.5
percent of the lawyers in this state,
regardless of practice area. It’s an honor
for promising attorneys 40 years old or
younger who have been in practice no
more than 10 years. Shane practiced in
Jacksonville before moving to Central
Florida and served as president of
the Jacksonville Asian-American Bar
Association for two terms. He is set
to begin his second term as Treasurer
for the Orlando Asian-American Bar
Association. Prior to attending law
school, Shane worked as a crisis
counselor serving distressed families
involved in the child welfare system.
PRACTICE AREAS
The boutique law firm practices
exclusively in the area of Family Law,
which includes Dissolution of Marriage,
Complex Property Distribution, High Net
Worth Divorce, Pre- & Post-Nuptial
Agreements, Same-Sex Divorce,
Cohabitation Agreements, Alimony,
Child Support, Time Sharing/Parenting
Plans, Modification and Enforcement
Actions, and Paternity.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Richard has donated countless
hours and dollars to our community
and local charities, including the Team
Gamez Foundation and the Central
Florida Women’s League. Shane enjoys
volunteering his time as a coach with
Upward Sports and attends First
Baptist Church of Windermere with his
Invented by 11-year-old Frank
Epperson more than 100 years ago,
there’s something nostalgic about
Popsicles. They evoke memories of
carefree summer days, riding bikes
and swinging on a front porch with
a sweet, frozen treat in hand. These
days, ice pops are experiencing renewed
popularity with peak-season
produce, savory spices, coffee, fresh
herbs and even vegetables. They are
easy to make, fun for kids, inexpensive
and versatile enough to accommodate
any diet. So, why not make some this
summer? The only tools you need are
a mold, a few ingredients and your
imagination.
Fresh & Fruity
Perfectly ripe peaches, berries and
melon blended with a little bit of apple
juice make delicious and healthy
ice pops. Try filling molds with fresh
slices of nectarines, kiwi, strawberries
and blueberries, covering the fruit with
white grape juice and freezing. These
“fruit salad pops” are stunning, simple
FOODIE FOR
and great for parties. Blend chunks of
mangos or papaya with pineapple
juice for a tropical treat; a few basil
leaves with pureed watermelon
make light and refreshing ice pops.
Remember to start with very ripe fruit
and taste the mixture before freezing.
Sweeten to taste with a teaspoon of
agave nectar or maple syrup. If you’re
feeling bold, try a pinch of chili powder
or hint of cinnamon for an added
kick.
Cool & Creamy
Add a creamy dimension by blending
in Greek yogurt, coconut or almond
milk, or half-and-half to pureed
fruit or juice. Add your favorite milk to
bananas, mangos or avocados with a
touch of honey or maple syrup to make
smooth and silky pops. Pudding pops
are an old-time favorite. Simply whisk
one package of pudding mix (3.9
ounces) with 2 cups of milk for two
minutes, stir in 1 cup of thawed Cool
Whip topping and freeze in molds.
Healthy Boost
Blend and freeze your favorite smoothie
recipe for a healthy, cool treat. Chia seeds
look lovely frozen in fruit pops and add
healthy omega-3 fatty acids and protein.
Ground flax seeds, protein powder, nut butter,
cocoa powder, dried goji berries, spirulina
powder and fresh greens like spinach
can all be added for an extra nutritional
boost; blending in a very ripe banana adds
sugar-free sweetness.
Dip & Decorate
Add the finishing touch by dipping
or drizzling ice pops with melted dark
or white chocolate and then sprinkling
on chopped nuts, grated coconut
or rainbow sprinkles. Experiment,
have fun and be creative!
Remember, freezing dulls flavors,
so make the mixture a little stronger
or sweeter than normal to ensure bold
ice pop flavors. Run frozen treats under
hot water briefly to loosen from
molds. Recipes yield about six ice
pops.
Avoid The Probate Canyon
Do Your Estate Planning Now
by: Kristen M. Jackson / Attorney
Jacob and Michelle, who were
married with two minor children.
Unexpectedly both were killed in
an automobile collision. They had
no last wills. It was impossible to
determine who died first, and each
person is presumed by law to own
half of all of their assets, so both
estates had to be probated.
Because the children were
minors, a court-appointed guardian
was required to manage the estates
until the children were 18 years
of age. Had Jacob and Michelle
established a revocable living trust
naming a successor trustee to handle
their assets upon their deaths, neither probate nor guardianship for their children would
have been required.
Unfortunately, death seems to occur when families are least prepared and most
vulnerable. As if hit by a ton of bricks, death leaves an enormous crevice between dreams
and reality. Our firm refers to this massive crevice as “The Probate Canyon.”
Imagine on one cliff of a canyon are all of the possessions acquired during your lifetime:
a home, cars, bank accounts, life insurance, retirement accounts and more. Now imagine
your surviving loved ones on the opposite cliff of that canyon. While they are entitled
to everything you worked for during your lifetime, there is no “estate
planning bridge” that guides them to your possessions because you
failed to build one before you died.
When this happens, you cannot avoid probate in Florida and your
loved ones shall be forced to wait for the court to build a bridge for
them. That bridge comes with a large price. Your loved ones will only
receive your possessions after the court and the attorneys have been paid
for their fees, probate court costs, recording fees, death taxes, accounting
fees, appraisal costs, executor commissions, publication costs and more.
Payment will come from assets that would have been distributed to your
beneficiaries had you taken the necessary steps to avoid probate.
What is Probate? It is a legal process that takes place after someone
dies. If a person dies with or without a last will, their heirs are required
to hire an attorney to manage the probate settlement by the court.
Furthermore, the probate process may take a year or longer if there are
complex issues to resolve and can cost 6 percent or more of the total
value of your estate. However, you can take steps to avoid the costs and
delays of probate.
Avoid the probate canyon, discussed in the above example, by
contacting a qualified estate planning attorney who can help you plan
for unexpected events by preparing an
estate plan for you.
SPORTS SPOTLIGHT
Diving Into New Heights
Shining a New Light on Women’s Cliff Diving
by Blair Parke
“I didn’t plan on doing this as a career,
and I am very aware of how dangerous
high diving is, but I love diving
and am figuring out every year that I get
better and learn a little more,” she said.
“I learned I was physically stronger than
I thought I was, even in the 40+ group.”
Whether it is diving off the cliffs of the
Azores islands near Portugal or competing
on American turf in Texas, Ginger
has seen a career she never thought
could happen, reaching higher heights
than ever before.
Ginger Huber of Dr. Phillips
participates in the Red Bull Cliff Diving series.
She walks to the edge of the platform,
mentally going through the routine she
is about to do. She readies herself one
last time, takes a deep breath, raises her
Ginger Huber, age 43, is a career cliff diver who hopes to one day become a coach for
women’s high diving.
arms and purposely plunges 72 feet (22
meters) into the water below.
For some, looking down 72 feet
into water is a feat they can’t do, but
professional cliff diver Ginger
Huber considers it a challenge she
finds thrilling and worthy, attempting
any chance she gets.
Started With Shows
After realizing gymnastics wasn’t for
her, diving was first introduced as an
outlet for young Ginger’s natural abilities
to flip. Once she joined a diving
club, she realized it was “love at first
sight” between her and diving.
“I instantly fell in love with diving, and
you couldn’t take me away from diving
practice. My parents would punish me
as a teenager by saying I couldn’t go
to diving practice,” Ginger said, when
mentioning her grandfather was a
backyard diver. “That cured everything.”
Niral Patel, M.D.

Entering college, Ginger joined the
University of Georgia diving team but
discovered a new form of diving while
on break from training one summer.
“I stumbled upon a diving show that
needed a diver for the summer, and I
was hired, which marked the start of
my professional career,” she said.
Ginger noticed the differences between
high diving and collegiate
diving, enjoying the challenges high
diving brought her and the opportunity
to continue diving even after she
graduated college.
“I love performing in shows and
loved learning different acrobatics,
branching out from diving into high
diving into aerial acts. I picked up
high diving, because if you could
high dive, you were much more valuable
and could get another contract
somewhere.”
Cliff diving became part of Ginger’s
professional career in 2013, when the
Red Bull Cliff Diving series brought
women into the male-dominated sport
of cliff diving. Thanks to Red Bull
and the FINA diving series, Ginger
has competed in exotic locations like
Russia, Wales, Abu Dhabi and even
the Yucatan, where she dove through a
hole instead of off a cliff.
“Every location in the Red Bull Cliff
Diving competition is unique, and I like
changes and challenges and figuring
out what I need to pull out of my diving
toolbox for the dive,” Ginger said with
a smile.
Knowledge to Share
To prepare for dives that range between
20-22 meters (about 66-73 feet)
above water, Ginger breaks her dive
down into two dives off lower platforms:
one height to practice the start
of her dive and the other height to practice
the finish. You might typically see
her training at Dr. P. Phillips YMCA with
Olympic diver/coach Mark Ruiz’s
team, practicing in the same location
where she first dove off a platform, or
at The Bar Method studio strengthening
her core muscles.
Diving also requires mental practice
of going through the dive, which
Ginger learned in college and
implements at home to prepare.
www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x July 20 - August 2, 2017 x 9
“Since I don’t have the height to train
on a regular basis, it is a lot of visualization
and mental imagery beforehand,
while mimicking the movements right
before dive competitions,” she said.
Ginger hopes to continue promoting
women’s cliff diving as much as she
can, holding up to her “I’ll do anything
for the sport” attitude by diving nude
for the 2014 ESPN Magazine’s Body
issue.
“I’m not really a comfortable nudisttype
person, but I do only wear a swimsuit,
and being older [43], I just thought
to myself, ‘Let it go and enjoy the
opportunity,’” she said.
The summer usually has Ginger
heavy in diving competitions — between
six to eight from June to October
— but she has also embraced chances
to judge in panels for other competitions
and hopes to follow her husband’s
coaching lead by becoming a coach
for women’s high diving.
But for now, Ginger looks forward
to continuing her cliff diving: looking
over the edge, drawing in a deep
breath, and taking the plunge to show
cliff diving isn’t just for men. ª
DEAR ORANGE COUNTY STUDENTS AND PARENTS:
Back to school is an exciting time for students, parents, teachers and
administrators. This time of year allows for a fresh start and an
opportunity to set new goals that we aspire to achieve.
At OCPS, everything we do is focused on the success of our students.
Our school district’s vision is clear — to be the top producer of successful
students in the nation. And we know that we can accomplish this with the
support and involvement of our families and the Central Florida
community.
AS WE LOOK TO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR, THERE IS MUCH TO BE EXCITED ABOUT:
• The graduation rate at our 19 traditional high schools is at an all-time high of 92.2 percent.
• Thanks to the support of the community through the half-penny sales tax extended by voters
in 2014, we will open 13 new and renovated schools — including Windermere High School.
• And as we enter the fourth year of our digital learning initiative, more than 100,000 students
at all high schools and some of our middle schools will have their own laptop.
Thank you to our parents and community members for supporting Orange County Public
Schools. It is because of you that our district continues to be successful.
As a final reminder, if you are new to the Central Florida community, be sure to visit our
“Newcomers” page online at www.ocps.net to find information about student enrollment.
We look forward to a rewarding school year.
Sincerely,
Barbara M. Jenkins, Ed.D.
Back to
School
2017
As summer winds down, children’s thoughts across Southwest Orlando
will inevitably turn to the first day of school. The school year, which begins
Aug. 14, is less than a month away, and students and their families
can get a head start by preparing now. The beginning of school is an
exciting time, but some might worry about what the coming year may
hold.
Southwest Orlando Bulletin’s 20th annual Back to School section provides
a comprehensive look at a variety of school-related topics. In the
following articles, area experts offer insights into different concerns often
brought about by the start of a new school year. For students, there
is an article about skin care. For parents, there is information about dental
hygiene, healthy skin, stress management for the family, and more.
Through Theatrical Education
It’s back-to-school time, and that
means back-to-school shopping.
Most school-supply lists tend to
include the basics: a backpack,
lunchbox, pencils, notebooks —
the list goes on and on. But what
about things like self-confidence,
team-building skills and creative
thinking?
Theater classes and productions
can help K-12 students develop
their skills as a performer. They
also enhance other critical skills
that they’ll carry with them as
they enter adulthood and begin
their careers — no matter in what
industry.
• Are Your Kids Skin-Ready for
School?
by Michael Steppie, M.D., President, Medical
Director
Associates in Dermatology
It’s that special time of year.
Time for parents and their children
to start trading pool floats for
pencils, summer camps for classrooms,
and picnics for packed
lunches. Here are a few tips and
tricks to keep you and your family’s
skin healthy and ready for the
new school year:
• Check your family’s skin products.
If anyone has sensitive skin
or a history of eczema, this is even
more important. Look for the word
“hypoallergenic” on all soaps,
lotions and detergents. This term
means the product is free of irritating
dyes, fragrances and substances
that may cause an allergic
reaction.
• Don’t forget the sunscreen!
Summer may be coming to an
end, but remember to keep your
children protected with a “broad
spectrum” sunscreen SPF of 30
or higher.
• Tame acne. Most of us remember
high school and the
growing pains of self-confidence.
Add acne to the mix,
and you might have an emotional
teenager on your hands.
Avoid being influenced by
highly advertised brands and
visit a dermatologist to prescribe
the most suitable acne
treatment.
So, while kids enjoy the last
few days of summer freedom,
keep their skin in mind. An ounce
of prevention — and sunscreen
— goes a long way. Over-thecounter
tips, tricks and old wives
remedies can treat many skin
conditions; however, know when
to seek professional advice, and
keep your family’s skin healthy
for all seasons to come.
As an extension of performing
students improve their selfconfidence
They also boost their verbal and
• Reasons Home Schooling
Is on the Rise
by Dannette Kelly, Program Assistant
Classical School of The First Academy
407-206-8762
thefirstacademy.org
According to the National Center
for Education Statistics, the percentage
of home-schooled students in the
United States has doubled between
1999 and 2012. The NCES report
also noted that there are wide arrays
of reasons parents choose to homeschool
their children, from avoiding
negative peer pressure, adding an
increase in religious instruction, adding
an increase in family time, and
having the ability to travel.
Home schooling across the nation
is booming. Although home schooling
can take many forms, a hybrid
program allows families to have flexibility
with the educational support
they desire. This has proven to be
especially beneficial to those students
who are pursuing other passions,
whether it is the arts, athletics
or other extracurricular activities.
Home schooling has now become
the first choice for many families in
Central Florida.
• A Child’s Vision Is Critical
to Learning
by Louis Blumenfeld, M.D.,
Pediatric Ophthalmologist
Eye Physicians of Central Florida
407-398-7730
www.eyephy.com
As children are approaching a
new school year, it is important to
think about their vision. About 80
percent of learning in a child’s first
12 years comes through their eyes.
Good vision is critical, not only to
their ability to read, learn and develop,
but it can also impact personality,
behavior, social skills and
self-esteem. Ophthalmologists have
long recognized that children’s eyes
are unique and quite different from
adult eyes.
Common reasons to see a pediatric
ophthalmologist include a
change in the appearance or misalignment
of the eyes, failed vision
screening at a doctor’s office
or school, and visual symptoms or
squinting. Other reasons may include
a family history of eye diseases,
such as lazy eye or medical
conditions/medications associated
with eye problems.
A child’s eyes can be examined
at any age, even as young as 1
day old if necessary. A need for
eyeglasses may be determined in
children even if they are not able
to speak or read a chart. This is
done with special equipment used
to see how light reflects off the inner
surface of the eye through special
lenses.
• Time to Schedule
Back-To-School Physicals
by Bindu Parekattil, M.D., FAAP
Ocoee Pediatrics
407-395-2037
www.ocoeekidsdocs.com
It’s that time of year again —
you’re in the middle of summer activities,
and all of a sudden you
realize there are only a few weeks
left before school starts. Along with
school supplies and new clothes,
back-to-school physicals should also

e on the list of things to do before
the school year begins.
Yearly physicals are a great opportunity
to catch issues early, such
as growth disturbances, screening
for diabetes and cholesterol, monitoring
blood pressure, and checking
any vision and hearing concerns. For
example, the doctor may notice that
your child has not grown as expected
in the past year. If they have previous
heights in the past four to five
years, they can see what pattern is
developing and whether there could
be an underlying growth issue. Your
doctor also provides information and
screening for nutrition, safety, child
development and mental health. In
addition, immunization records are
reviewed for any needed vaccines.
Vaccinations are an important preventative
measure that keeps children
healthy. We no longer need to
worry about diseases such as polio,
which has been eradicated in the
U.S.
Getting your child’s yearly physical
and immunizations will help keep
your child healthy and active.
• The Purpose of the Skin Care
Process
by Debbie Wisner, President, & Debby Tapia,
No matter what age you are,
skin care is the most essential
part of the total beauty regime. If
your skin is healthy and glowing,
then any makeup applied over it
will be picture-perfect, too. It is
important that you understand the
purpose of each step in the skin
care process.
Follow these steps twice a day for
healthy skin:
• Cleanser — Removes dead surface
skin cells and surface dirt such
as makeup, perspiration and environmental
residue.
• Astringents/Toners — The second
step of the cleansing process removes
traces of the primary cleanser,
making sure the skin is truly clean and
pH-balanced.
www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x July 20 - August 2, 2017 x 15
• Moisturizers — Help to build
water levels within the skin by preventing
the skin’s natural moisture
from evaporating. This is like a drink
of water to the skin.
• Masques — Are available in
many forms to meet the wide range
of skin care needs for various skin
types.
Don’t be influenced by big, expensive
brands. The less-expensive
ones are just as good, if not better.
Remember, what works for you is the
most important.
Back-To-School Transition
by Dawn Douglas, Co-Owner
Massage Envy Dr. Phillips
407-354-3689
Getting everything ready for
the kids to go back to school is
no easy task. Bouncing from one
store to the next, trying to find
just the right outfits and school
supplies can leave you feeling
drained and stressed out. Make
sure to remember and take the
time you need to relax throughout
the process. This will help you
and, ultimately, your children stay
calm and have smooth sailing into
the new school year.
Consider a massage or a facial
to help you unwind. Massage can
help ease muscle aches and body
pains, as well as help you shed
stress during some of your most
stressful times.
interest or passion in something,
use it. Once your child shows a
spark of excitement and curiosity,
help them pursue more resources
or information about it. There is
an abundance of digital resources,
but don’t forget about good
old-fashion hands-on experiences,
too.
Second, let your child run after
the questions. Let them do the
heavy lifting to find the answers.
When they ask a question, facilitate
them in finding the answer.
Keep a notebook, whiteboard
or digital list of all the questions
they have asked and answers they
have found.
Next, give choices. Let your
child steer the way for a family
outing or experience. Giving them
the freedom and ownership will
pave the way for higher engagement.
They chose it, so they own it!
Finally, make the time. It seems
cliché, but you can never overestimate
setting aside time for
exploration. Even a short walk
around the neighborhood can
open the door to a whole new
world.
• How Performing Arts Classes
Influence Your Child
by Hillary Brook, Executive Director
Theatre South Playhouse
407-489-4458
theatresouthplayhouse.org
Theater, dance and music are
important art forms to study, but
they also can have a huge influence
on your children, not only on
how they perform onstage, but also
how they perform in real life. The
tools learned in the “theater world
setting” prepare children with basic
life-coping skills. The self-confidence
gained in being a part of a
cast or “ensemble” of a theatrical
play or dance class can prepare
your children to hold their heads
up high in school, ace their oral
exams, boost their classroom confidence,
and protect them against
bullying. When they are taught acting,
they are taught to be strong,
humble and creative human beings.
They leave classes and productions
with strong confidence
and a greater understanding of
human character. These classes unleash
children’s imaginations and
teach them that there is nothing
they cannot accomplish.
It’s almost time for children to
get back on the bus to head into
another year of school. The new
school year is the perfect time to
make sure that the family is upto-date
on all their preventative
dental work. It is also an excellent
time to begin new routines or
improve existing routines around
dental hygiene.
Practicing good dental hygiene
methods can help you prevent major
dental work down the road.
Take your children to the dentist
early and often, and also make sure
that your college-age students have
their exams before they head off to
campus.
Get your student off to a new
is not only important for their style
Make sure that your pupil is fit
for the correct shoe size when you
are shopping. Younger children’s
feet grow fast and frequently, so
this is especially important when
buying for elementary and middle
school students. Also, be sure to
check your school’s uniform policy
for specifics on shoe requirements.
Many schools require a certain style
or color to be compliant with their
policies.
• Preparing for Preschool
by Deanna Gustafson, Director
Childrens Lighthouse Learning Center
of People of Faith
407-395-0077
www.childrenslighthousepof.com
Preschool offers many benefits
for children. It is a great place
for kids to interact with peers and
learn valuable life lessons. It also
prepares them for kindergarten
and beyond. Preparing for a new
school year can set the tone for a
positive experience for everyone.
Summertime schedules are often
much more relaxed, but children do
well with routines, so establishing a
school routine early on is important.
Before school starts, get your preschoolers
accustomed to getting up
and going to bed at a certain time
every day.
Listen to your preschooler and answer
any questions they might have.
Sharing insights about when you
were in school can be beneficial on
multiple levels. Reading books about
school together is a great bonding
time, and often the books will spark
a great discussion.
For first-timers attending school,
show them where they will be going
by attending an open house.
Knowing their classroom and meeting
their teacher ahead of time eases
potential anxiety.
Sometimes young children — and
even parents — deal with separation
anxiety during back-to-school time.
In both cases, those feeling are completely
normal. The more assurance
60 Years in the Making
Happy Birthday, Foundation Academy!
As the first day of school approaches,
the halls of Foundation
Academy are much like any other
school, filled with teachers preparing
classrooms and gearing up for the
start of a new school year. However,
this isn’t just any academic year for
Foundation Academy. This year
marks the school’s 60th anniversary,
the celebration of which will officially
kick off January 2018, at the annual
State of the Academy Address.
From what started as a kindergarten
school in 1958, Foundation Academy
is now a top-notch, pre-K 3 through 12,
college-preparatory school that boasts
state-of-the-art facilities and advanced
classes with more growth on the horizon.
The school has two campuses:
North and South. The North Campus
is for pre-K through sixth grades.
The South Campus is where the seventh-
through 12th-grade students attend.
As a ministry of First Baptist
Church of Winter Garden, at the
heart of Foundation Academy's success
is its biblical teaching, integrated
into the curriculum and presented in
engaging age-appropriate ways.
The school is in the unique position
to foster children from their first pre-K
3 class all the way through high school
graduation. Teachers prepare students
in each grade for the next steps in their
educational careers, whether that is
getting ready for kindergarten or preparing
for college, with the focus on
aiming each of them toward a college
experience. Foundation Academy is
honored to have 100 percent college
placement among its graduates since
2010. The class of 2017, with 60 graduates,
received more than $2.5 million
in scholarship opportunities.
“We feel like we’ve continued
to grow, improve and build on our
successes each year,” Michelle
Campbell, admissions director,
Foundation Academy’s master plan is approved, which includes an expanded gym, a
fine arts center, and a new athletic complex.
said. “Enrollment is at an all-time
high and continuing to grow.”
A STEAM Education
Foundation Academy’s curriculum
incorporates STEAM — science,
technology, engineering, arts and
mathematics. The teachers are able
to have a cohesive strategy that
makes it seamless, not using STEAM
to replace conventional learning, but
to enhance it. Students start using
technology in preschool and, as they
progress, use more advanced equipment,
such as drones and a 3-D printer.
The school partners with Google
Education, and all teachers receive
training on how to incorporate technology
with learning.
STEAM wouldn’t be complete without
the arts. Art classes and extracurriculars
are available to all ages. The
arts department has received high
accolades, including a 100 percent
pass rate for AP studio art class for
six years in a row and earning the
Florida ACSI Best in Show at the high
school level every year since 2010.
The Thespian Society competes at the
PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
state level against private and public
schools every year. The program is
enriched by the support of the Fine
Arts League, a parent-contributed
organization.
Growth on the Horizon
Due to Foundation Academy’s
growth, expansions and upgrades
have become necessary. The school
received approval on its master plan,
which includes an expansion of the
gym, a fine arts center, and a new
athletic complex. The South Campus
also has upgraded anatomy and
marine science labs, and is currently
upgrading a combined lab for chemistry
and biology for the new school
year.
The athletic complex broke ground
in May 2017 and is expected to
be completed in time to play the
homecoming football game on the
new field. The complex will serve
as the home field for football, soccer
and track. The football team has
been using Walker Field in Winter
Garden while track and soccer
teams practice on the current South
Campus. All programs are looking
forward to the new facility.
“It’s been a great experience using
Walker Field, but we are very excited,
because there is nothing like having
your own home field on your own
property,” Campbell said. “We’re really
excited to get facilities that match
the quality of the programs.”
School officials are planning construction
of a new fine arts center and
more classrooms in the near future.
“It’s an exciting time to be a part
of the Foundation Academy family,”
exclaimed David Buckles, school
president.
Because Foundation Academy
relies on donations and community
partners, school officials are conscious
of being wise with the funding
and plan to move forward when
they are confident everything is in
order.
With Foundation Academy, students
get the best of so many things:
a great academic program, athletic
opportunities, a family atmosphere,
enrichment and extracurricular activities.
The school is large enough
to do all the traditional events that
make special memories — prom,
homecoming, school plays, etc. —
and also offer a top education and
biblical foundation that prepare
students for college and beyond.
Windermere High will soon begin
its first school year. In an introductory
letter, Principal Douglas Guthrie
stated, “We know that [2017-18]
will be a wonderful new start for
students here at Windermere High
School. Our teachers and staff have
worked hard to establish a rigorous
curriculum based on STEAM (science,
technology, engineering, arts and
mathematics). We challenge you to
strive to achieve the highest levels in
all your endeavors. We believe all students
have the potential to complete
college-level courses or even earn
an Associate of Arts degree while
at Windermere High School. We
encourage you to challenge yourself
with honors, advanced placement
and Valencia College courses.
Course selection allows you to begin
an adventure through which you will
learn and define, not only who you
are, but also what you can become.”
The school will be offering a sneak
peek, hosted by Southwest resident
and Orange County School Board
member Pam Gould, on Aug. 2.
spoke to several Rotary clubs
about her life in Taiwan and her
experiences with American life.
She also attended school and
joined programs created by Rotary
clubs, including feeding the hungry
of the program is for bright
young people to better understand
Americans and their way of life. As
Sofhia grows up and takes important
positions, perhaps in her country’s
government, she will be better
suited to mediate issues between
America and Taiwan for peaceful
outcomes.
There is no day the music died
when you experience the sights
and sounds of Johnny Wild
and the Delights, a local tribute
band of ’50s and ’60s music.
Specializing in the timeless classics
of Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison,
Hank Williams and others from
the early rock ‘n’ roll generation,
this band seeks to immerse audiences
in the tunes of their youth
or acquaint these artists with audiences
for the first time.
“We want audiences to have
a time-traveling experience, and
I can’t tell you how many people
have come up saying, ‘Hey, that
brought me back,’ and that our energy
is different from other bands
doing this type of show. People
are responding to that, and it is really
fun for us,” said band founder
Andy Matchett, lead guitarist
and singer, who graduated from
Dr. Phillips High School’s
Visual & Performing Arts program.
What had begun as a way for
band members to be able to play
music they enjoyed has become a
SOUTHWEST
professional musical experience
that keeps Central Florida audiences
twisting, swinging and doing
the mashed potato.
Researching the Greats
Johnny Wild and the Delights
originated from the band members’
genuine love for the beloved
tunes of the ‘50s and ‘60s, whether
it was surfing songs by the
Beach Boys or groundbreaking
music by Elvis Presley and Hank
Williams.
Andy recalled hearing these
songs as a child, and they always
remind him of good times with
family. The opportunity to play
Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly
Story in Mount Dora strengthened
SPOTLIGHT
A Time-Travel Musical Journey
Bringing Rock ‘n’ Roll Classics to Audiences of All Ages
by Blair Parke
his knowledge of Holly and early
rock ‘n’ roll music, as well as introduced
him to his bass player,
Abe.
The two thought about forming a
band together, which established
Andy Matchett and the Minks,
and allowed them to play original
music and build their playing
repertoire of ‘50s and ‘60s music
in the meantime. The Minks performed
until 2012, leading Andy
to form another band, the threepiece
Continentals, which was
the first foray into being a tribute
band of retro music.
However, the creative juices really
began flowing when Johnny
Wild and the Delights formed in
2013, increased by the national
appreciation for the ‘50s and ‘60s
culture, thanks to shows like Mad
Men. The addition of more bandmates,
include the Wildettes —
Andy’s girlfriend, Amanda, and
Abe’s wife, Whitney — brought
the band to completion.
“We wanted to bring the style
of Mad Men, that feeling, to music
and as immersive of an experience
as possible on our budget,”
Andy said. “We will go to vintage
shops to get clothing as close to
the genre as we can get.”
Andy also took to researching
the mannerisms of the artists
whose songs the band would be
performing, finding online videos
to learn how Roy Orbison,
Buddy Holly and Hank Williams
played their guitars, interacted
with audiences and put passion
into their music. He relied heavily
on his theatrical background from
DPHS’s VPA program to embody
the musicians, while adding his
own touches here and there in
performances.
The results have been countless,
full-capacity shows in the
three squares of The Villages
in Sumter County, as well as
regular gigs at DeLand’s Athens
Theater and in Winter Haven.
Performing locally allows the
band to stay close to their families,
while bringing a retro flavor
to their beloved Central Florida
community.
All ages attend their shows, but
Andy admits the older crowds at
The Villages get the most enjoyment
from their performances.
“Entertainment has value to the
older crowds,” he said. “We place
value on what we do, because
we know it is two hours of great
memories, great times and great
dancing. For people in their 20s
and 30s, we wanted our band to
educate them on this early rock ‘n’
roll feeling and this music that was
treated with integrity.
“This band meets all of my criteria:
something I enjoy doing,
©The Villages Entertainment
Johnny Wild and the Delights perform retro music at several locations in Central Florida.
something that has limitless possibilities,
something that has an
audience, and something that I
felt I could do with some artistic
integrity. We sketch out the show
to where, when we are onstage,
it looks effortless. Many hours are
put into making it work, and, to
me, that little bit of difference between
a regular band playing the
songs and our performances is
noticed by audiences.”
More Tributes to Come
There are many shows planned
ahead for Johnny Wild and the
Delights, including this October’s
Monster’s Ball performance in The
Villages, a Motown-themed show
and a themed cruise in April 2018.
Andy has hopes to eventually put
together a Beatles show and hand
the reigns over to his Wildettes for
a special Grease singalong performance
that the ladies will direct
and choreograph.
Yet what fuels the band to keep
researching, planning shows and
bringing their best is knowing that
audiences young and old are experiencing
again (or for the first time)
the soul, energy and passion that
made rock ‘n’ roll what it is today.
“When you find an audience
who appreciates you,
you find a way to pay them
back, and you find the ways to
give them what they want.” ª
SOUTHWEST
SEEN
The MetroWest Master Association,
managed by FirstService Residential, hosted
the 2017 MetroWest MusicFest, presented
by Diamond Sponsor Girard Environmental
Services, at MetroWest Golf Club. The free,
family-friendly event attracted a crowd of
2,000 people who partook in a relaxing,
sunny afternoon filled with multiple music
genres of talented local bands and school
groups. Entertainment featured a capella
sensation Pop Fusion; Mighty Swell, a
multiple-instrument bluegrass/pop group; and
the I-4 Band, a high-energy dance/top-40
group. The event also highlighted community
talent and resources with performances by a
jazz combo from the Valencia College East
Campus Music Department; Olympia High
School Band; and Chain of Lakes Middle
School Jazz Band, featuring vocalist Vrishti
Pires. In addition to amazing music, local
businesses sponsored exhibits, and delicious
food options were available from numerous
food trucks and vendors.
