Are you getting enough sleep?
I imagine we’ve all had mornings where we
didn’t get enough sleep, it can make you feel
quite irritable and in a low mood. The Sleep
Council report an alarming 4 out of 5 of us
complain of inadequate or disturbed sleep. So
why is getting a good night sleep important?
computers, phones, tablets and TV’s can hinder
it’s production and so preventing you from feeling
drowsy.
Limit Caffeine: Caffeine is a stimulant, which
means it makes us feel more alert.
WHY DO WE SLEEP?
We spend one third of our lives asleep and the
reason for this is simple, sleep is essential for our
physical health and mental well being. Not getting
enough sleep can affect how well you learn, get
along with others, work, react and think. Even
after just one night without sleep, concentration
can become more difficult. Long term sleep
deficiency has been linked to an increase in the
risk of chronic health problems like heart disease,
kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure,
stroke, obesity and Alzheimer’s disease.
TIPS FOR A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP…
Avoid Bright Screens Before Bed: Melatonin
is the hormone that helps you enter into your
sleep cycle and light from screens such as
Use Relaxation Techniques: It’s suggested that
half of all insomnia cases are caused by emotional
issues such as anxiety, stress and depression.
So a good relaxation technique like 7/11 (as
mentioned in last months article) is always handy
to have.
Exercise: Regular exercise can not only help you
sleep but also improve your quality of sleep.
Habit: Create your own habit of going to bed and
waking up at the same time.
Do Something Boring: If you find getting up
helps you if you can’t sleep, make sure you do
something boring until you feel sleepy. Avoid
engaging in a fun or stimulating activity because
you don’t want to reward your brain for staying
awake!
