Are you getting enough sleep?<br />

I imagine we’ve all had mornings where we<br />

didn’t get enough sleep, it can make you feel<br />

quite irritable and in a low mood. The Sleep<br />

Council report an alarming 4 out of 5 of us<br />

complain of inadequate or disturbed sleep. So<br />

why is getting a good night sleep important?<br />

computers, phones, tablets and TV’s can hinder<br />

it’s production and so preventing you from feeling<br />

drowsy.<br />

Limit Caffeine: Caffeine is a stimulant, which<br />

means it makes us feel more alert.<br />

WHY DO WE SLEEP?<br />

We spend one third of our lives asleep and the<br />

reason for this is simple, sleep is essential for our<br />

physical health and mental well being. Not getting<br />

enough sleep can affect how well you learn, get<br />

along with others, work, react and think. Even<br />

after just one night without sleep, concentration<br />

can become more difficult. Long term sleep<br />

deficiency has been linked to an increase in the<br />

risk of chronic health problems like heart disease,<br />

kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure,<br />

stroke, obesity and Alzheimer’s disease.<br />

TIPS FOR A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP…<br />

Avoid Bright Screens Before Bed: Melatonin<br />

is the hormone that helps you enter into your<br />

sleep cycle and light from screens such as<br />

Use Relaxation Techniques: It’s suggested that<br />

half of all insomnia cases are caused by emotional<br />

issues such as anxiety, stress and depression.<br />

So a good relaxation technique like 7/11 (as<br />

mentioned in last months article) is always handy<br />

to have.<br />

Exercise: Regular exercise can not only help you<br />

sleep but also improve your quality of sleep.<br />

Habit: Create your own habit of going to bed and<br />

waking up at the same time.<br />

Do Something Boring: If you find getting up<br />

helps you if you can’t sleep, make sure you do<br />

something boring until you feel sleepy. Avoid<br />

engaging in a fun or stimulating activity because<br />

you don’t want to reward your brain for staying<br />

awake!<br />
