While concerned citizens could 

not agree on a preferred “fix” to 

Sand Lake Road, west of Interstate 4, 

there was unanimous agreement at 

a fall community meeting that something 

needs to be done to relieve the 

congestion and traffic. 

“I did not hear anyone say they 

didn’t want us to do anything,” 

said Anoch Whitfield, Orange 

County project manager, about the 

feedback the county received during 

the first community meeting, at 

which about 80 people attended. 

“We heard views about different 

improvements.” 

Since that meeting, the Orange 

County Transportation Planning 

Division has completed a study of 

Sand Lake Road, from Apopka- 

Vineland Road to Turkey Lake Road. 

The data collection, some analysis 

and preliminary alternatives 

have been considered. Currently, 

67,200 vehicles travel on Sand 

Lake Road between I-4 and Turkey 

Lake Road. From Turkey Lake Road 

to Dr. Phillips Boulevard, 49,000 

make the journey daily, and 30,200

Orange County officials are examining data and determining the best way to improve 

traffic conditions along Sand Lake Road. 

westbound, with about one-third 

of the traffic trying to turn right at 

Dr. Phillips Boulevard. From 2012 

through 2015, 859 motor vehicle 

accidents occurred, with the highest 

number (203) happening between 

The Fountains and Dr. Phillips 

Boulevard. More than one-half were 

rear-end crashes, followed by leftturn 

accidents, and fewer than 1 

percent involved a pedestrian or 

bicycle. 

The study also included identifying 

improvements to Wallace Road, 

because it was the closest parallel 

road. It carries about 14,700 vehicles 

daily between Turkey Lake 

Road and Dr. Phillips Boulevard. 

Those improvements, including medians 

and turn lanes near the intersection 

of Dr. Phillips Boulevard, will 

begin this fall. 

The study began in May 2016. 

The county sought suggestions from 

the public. People from local neighborhoods, 

civic organizations and 

businesses are participating in a 

Study Advisory Group. 

“We had a good dialogue and 

feedback,” Whitfield said. 

Recommendations will be presented 

to the Orange County Local 

Planning Agency and then the

Orange County Board of County 

Commissioners, who, ultimately, will 

make the final decision. 

The first option under consideration 

is to leave the road as it is. 

The second and preferred option 

is to make operational improvements 

to the north and south sides of 

the 1.3-mile corridor, such as adding 

continuous right-lane turns and 

improving access and widening the 

median in front of The Fountains and 

Plaza Venezia shopping complexes 

between Turkey Lake Road and Dr. 

Phillips Boulevard. On the western 

portion, from Dr. Phillips Boulevard 

to Apopka-Vineland Road, the 

county is considering a widened 

sidewalk on the south side that 

would extend to near Turkey Lake 

Road. 

“We heard consistently [about] 

the operational project,” said Brian 

Sanders, chief transportation planner 

at the county. 

Many of the people who attended 

the meeting favored this operational 

improvement plan. 


The third alternative is a full reconstruction, 

building additional lanes, 

so there would be three lanes in 

each direction from Turkey Lake to 

Apopka-Vineland roads with bike 

lanes and the wide sidewalk on the 

south side, as well as an opportunity 

for transit. Some in attendance said 

they do not see many people walking 

in the area and thought wider 

sidewalks would be a waste of money. 

However, the county observed 

more than 300 people walking 

and bicycling in the area during a 

two-day survey taken in September 

2015 and May 2016. 

The board of county commissioners 

has approved the operational 

improvements. Design should begin 

in 2018, after a consultant is hired. 

Sanders does not anticipate needing 

to purchase right-of-way, so construction 

can begin when the design 

is completed, about one year after 

the design contract is let.

Orlando Repertory Theatre’s 2017-18 Season 

It’s almost showtime again 

for Orlando Repertory 

Theatre, but the 2017-18 

performance season marks a 

different focus for the theater 

in providing quality entertainment 

for children and their 

families. This season encompasses 

shows that reflect the 

current times young people 

are living in and offers theatrical 

opportunities that give a 

voice to children’s perspectives 

on life. 

Among the upcoming 

shows are Disney’s Newsies 

The Musical; Polkadots: The 

Cool Kids Musical; The Best 

Christmas Pageant Ever: The 

Musical; Flora & Ulysses; 

Madagascar — A Musical 

Adventure; and Judy Moody 

& Stink: The Mad, Mad, Mad, 

Mad Treasure Hunt. 

“The crucial role of theater, 

and the arts in general, is to 

reflect the times we are living 

in, and I have chosen shows that are 

told or shown from the viewpoint/ 

perspective of a child, or we see the 

story through a young person’s eyes,” 

said Jeffrey Revels, Orlando REP’s 

artistic director. “Children understand 

situations a lot more than we 

give them credit for, and these are 

shows about young people making a 

diffe rence.” 

The Shows 

To start the season off with a bang, 

Orlando REP is the first theater in 

the southeastern United States to 

produce Disney’s beloved Newsies 

(Sept. 5-Oct. 22), which is based on 

the real-life newsboy strike in 1899, 

following a successful Broadway run 

and recent national tour. 

“What we love is that the story 

shows young people affecting social 

change, where those who are

considered ‘weak,’ stood up to those 

in power (publishing giants in the industry) 

and actually affected change 

when they saw that things weren’t 

fair,” Jeff said. 

Following Newsies’ social change 

stance is a unique musical that focuses 

on the civil rights movement, 

particularly the events inspired by 

young Ruby Bridges entering a 

newly segregated school in Little 

Rock, Arkansas, during the 1960s. 

Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical 

(Oct. 23-Nov. 19) features a girl 

with purple skin and pink polka dots 

entering a new town and school 

filled with people who have blue 

skin with orange squares. 

“It illustrates how a young person 

can make a difference in the world, 

where this young girl comes to town 

and challenges everyone’s world 

views,” Jeff said. 

PROMOTIONAL FEATURE 

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: 

The Musical (Nov. 13-Dec. 30), based 

on the treasured children’s classic, is 

sure to put everyone in the Christmas 

spirit, as six rowdy and disobedient 

children learn about the Nativity story 

while taking part in a local church’s 

Christmas pageant. 

“It has fun and inspirational music, 

with every character making discoveries 

along the way” Jeff said. 

Up next, from Jan. 29-Feb. 25, 

is Flora & Ulysses, based from the 

Newbury Medal-winning book about 

a young girl grappling with her parents’ 

divorce until she meets a superhero 

squirrel named Ulysses. 

“Many children have found themselves 

in the same position [as Flora] 

and felt alone. In this play — and 

many others — Orlando REP finds exceptional 

ways of exploring challenging 

themes and creating a theatrical 

experience families can 

share together,” said Ashley

Rounding out the season 

is a musical adaptation of 

Dreamworks’ Madagascar 

(Feb. 26-April 8) and from 

the popular children’s series, 

Judy Moody & Stink: The Mad,

(April 9-May 13); Judy Moody 

is part of a co-commission 

Orlando REP is participating 

in with six other theater for 

young audiences around the 

country, collectively offering 

seven different productions of 

the same show for audiences 

nationwide. 

Interspersed this season are 

four staged readings comprising 

Perspectives: A Series 

of Staged Readings presented 

in conjunction with the 

Holocaust Memorial Resource 

& Education Center of Florida 

and featuring guest speakers to discuss 

timely topics with audiences following 

their performances. Themes of 

these readings include a young refugee 

escaping his war-torn country, a 

Muslim-American tee na ger attending 

school in a hijab, high school girls 

who are undocumented citizens, and 

a ceremony for the last paving stone 

over natural earth. 

“In any of the productions this season, 

I think young people watching 

will see themselves in some role of 

the story,” Jeff said. “Our vision for 

every production is all about how we 

can find the voice of the young person 

and give them a platform for creating 

conversations with others. We 

feel this is our contribution to society.”

NEWS SEEN 

At the end of the 2016-17 school year, Holy 

Family Catholic School teachers and staff 

members bid farewell to nearly 70 students — the 

graduates of the Class of 2017. Many of the teens 

will continue their educational careers at Bishop 

Moore Catholic School while others will join their 

peers at Orlando’s private and public high schools. 

HFCS hosted a commencement ceremony, awards 

banquet and graduation party in the students’ 

honor. Many of them had been with their classmates 

from preschool through eighth grade. The faculty and 

staff of HFCS wish the best of luck to all graduates as 

they begin their freshman year.

The 2017 Florida League All-Star 

Game, presented by Central Florida 

McDonald’s, brought a record-setting 

Home Run Derby, followed by an exciting 

baseball game between the 

North and the South. The North prevailed, 

winning the game 6-4. Winter 

Garden resident Chase Smartt provided 

the highlight of the night early on

Arts in the Community 

Orlando Boasts a Variety of Ways to Get Involved 

for older adults, which resulted in a 

National Leadership Council. 

“Social engagement and creativity 

were the key drivers behind this 

program,” said Diana Silvey, program 

director of Winter Park Health 

Foundation. “We provided Joshua 

Vickery’s team at CFCArts with a 

planning grant to survey local older 

adults and review practices of other 

programs around the country before 

this program.” 

Arts in Action offers a variety of 

eight-week courses with 90-minute 

classes each week, which encourages 

mastery of skill as well 

as creates more opportunities for 

individuals to create long-lasting 

bonds. The courses offered in 2017 

will highlight the areas of acting 

(Play It Out), singing (Just Sing), storytelling 

(Pass It On), and dancing 

(Feel It, Move It). At the conclusion 

of each program, participants 

may showcase or perform for their 

peers, friends and families. 

“The performance can be an 

important validation for the artist,” 

Silvey said. “But it’s also an opportunity 

to see the talent of our older 

adults, to better appreciate how 

vital they are and how much they 

have to offer.” 

CFCArts’ mission is to create opportunities 

for artists of any age to 

connect, serve and perform. With 

dues of $30 for each eight-week 

program, these courses are affordable 

and accessible thanks to 

a sponsorship by the Winter Park 

Health Foundation. Those who 

are unable to pay may apply for 

scholarships.

New Art Exhibition 

Officials at Albin Polasek 

Museum & Sculpture Gardens 

announced an exhibit that highlights 

the new Florida School of 

Painters. Captured in Paint: 

Central Florida in Art will run 

from Sept. 12 through Dec. 3. The 

works on display come from the private 

collections of Hal Stringer 

and Kevin Miller, local art collectors 

and plein air advocates. 

The exhibit explores a collection 

of contemporary landscapes illustrating 

the Central Florida that residents 

love — one filled with light, 

atmosphere, dramatic weather and 

a myriad of lush ecosystems, from 

palmetto scrub to sandy beaches 

— depicted by various plein air 

artists. 

Plein air comes from the French 

word meaning “open air” and is 

the painting style that the artists featured 

in the collection embrace. The 

canvases become more impressive 

when the viewer considers the challenging 

factors for the artist who 

chooses to paint in the field, with 

shifting natural light and a range 

of temperatures and weather conditions. 

Captured in Paint: Central 

Florida in Art also illustrates and 

helps to preserve some of Central 

Florida’s most beloved natural 

landscapes. 

“It is our hope that this collection 

of contemporary Florida landscapes 

not only captures the beauty of this remarkable, 

sunshine-drenched state, 

but will also kindle the spark of 

conservation within each viewer’s 

heart,” said Rachel Frisby, 

Polasek Museum curator. “This exhibit 

is a celebration of what the 

Florida landscape is today as we 

highlight relevant conservation challenges 

and the triumphs of our next 

generation of the Florida School 

painters.”

Museum of Art 

Orlando Museum of Art welcomes 

visitors of all ages and abilities. 

Special programs have been 

set up specifically to suit the needs 

of different groups of people. Arts 

on the Go is for senior adults living 

in congregate living sites who 

are unable to travel to the museum. 

It uses art reproductions and 

hands-on objects as a way to connect 

to lifetime experiences, social 

issues and to stimulate personal 

memories as part of lifelong learning 

activities. It creates a positive, 

communal experience that gives 

older adults the opportunity to appreciate 

art and share memories 

together. 

Art With Purpose is a partnership 

with the Zebra Coalition, 

a local nonprofit organization that 

provides services for LGBTQ youth 

ages 13-24. The program offers

Zebra youth weekly art workshops 

that relate to topics of identity. 

Each youth is provided with a visual 

journal in which he or she 

creates his or her work. The process 

of art journaling allows the 

youth to engage in a progressive 

internal dialogue whose tone develops 

each week. At the conclusion 

of each session, participants 

are asked to share their work with 

the group — a conversation that 

is overseen by a licensed mental 

health counselor. The objective of 

the program is to provide engaging 

art programming that offers 

opportunities for self-development 

and self-improvement. 

Through interactive tours of the 

museum’s exhibitions, Art’s the 

Spark gives those living with 

memory or neurological impairments 

and their healthy caregivers 

a fun experience, an expressive 

outlet and an opportunity for adult 

discussions. It is based on a similar 

program at The Museum of 

Modern Art in New York and is 

the only one of its kind in Central 

Florida. It provides a safe environment 

for members of the community 

who may have lost their memory 

but not their imagination and a forum 

for dialogue through looking 

at and making art. OMA professional 

educators lead small group 

tours in the museum’s galleries during 

nonpublic hours, offering an 

experience designed to use fine 

art as a catalyst for discussion and 

reminiscing. After the tour, healthy 

caregivers enjoy social time with 

other caregivers with coffee and 

conversation while their loved ones 

engage in a studio art activity. 

The museum offers a program 

that connects visitors of all ages 

with developmental and learning 

disabilities and those on the autism 

spectrum to art and the world 

around them. In an environment 

where there are no wrong questions 

or answers, the Creative 

Connections program sparks 

imagination and fosters creative expression. 

The workshops welcome 

children and adults with a range of 

abilities and learning styles together 


with family members. All can enjoy 

the workshops, which include exploring 

art galleries and then making 

their own studio classroom. 

ArtReach delivers multifaceted 

arts enrichment programming 

for children and families living at 

the Coalition for the Homeless of 

Central Florida. The program consists 

of instructor-guided studio art 

classes and workshops delivered 

at the Women and Children’s 

Resource Center at the coalition 

and the museum, plus five interactive 

tours of exhibitions at the museum. 

ArtReach sessions provide 

participants with a creative outlet 

and safe environment for the expression 

of feelings. The art-making 

activities within the program develop 

lifelong learning skills, such 

as critical thinking, problem solving 

and patience. Successful completion 

of art projects also builds selfesteem 

and confidence in youth 

participants. 

The museum brings art to ill children 

through engaging storytelling 

and hands-on art activities. 

Hospital ArtReach provides an 

opportunity for children to spend 

quality time with their families outside 

of a sterile hospital room and a 

creative outlet for expressing their 

feelings. OMA officials believe the 

power of art will aid in the healing 

process to lift spirits, spark imaginations 

and boost self-esteem. 

The project currently provides 

programs to Nemours Children’s 

Hospital, Florida Hospital for 

Children, and Orlando Health’s 

Arnold Palmer Children’s 

Hospital. 

Outreach Lectures makes art 

appreciation and lifelong learning 

accessible to those unable to visit 

OMA. The museum offers lectures 

about a variety of artists, art historical 

trends and current exhibitions 

at the museum on a regular 

basis throughout the year to retirement 

centers, organizations and 

conferences.
