If people are concerned about the speed of
traffic through the village, perhaps they would
like to help monitor it, and report any vehicles
travelling at excessive speed.
We have a Community Speedwatch team in the
village, which has a speed monitoring device
to measure traffic speeds, and can report any
vehicles breaking the speed limits to the police,
who will contact the motorists concerned, and
take appropriate action.
(Motorists will usually be given a warning in the first
instance, but repeated speed violations reported
through the Surrey and Sussex Community
Speedwatch teams can result in prosecution).
The primary aim of the Speedwatch initiative
is to show motorists using the village roads
that we are concerned to monitor speeds and
encourage people to drive safely. The high
visibility yellow jackets worn by the team when
they are monitoring can have a really good
effect in reminding everyone that they should
be observing the official speed limits at all times.
Volunteers are needed to help with the
monitoring, and it does not require a massive
commitment. We simply want people who from
time to time (perhaps once a month) are willing
to spend 30 to 45 minutes or so monitoring one
of the 4 official sites in the village where we are
permitted to operate. (one site on Green Road,
one on North Common Road, one in South
Road and one on Ditchling Road).
We work in teams of three, and it is simply a matter
of registering as a volunteer on the website (http://
www.communityspeedwatch.co.uk/), doing a bit
of training online, and then coming out with one of
the teams to put it into practice.
If you would like to help please contact the
local Speedwatch Co-ordinator, John Wigzell,
(wiggymail@btinternet.com) or the Parish
Clerk (clerk@wivelsfield.net).
