a Profile of your CouNty CouNCillor Councillor Jim Sheppard I have lived in Sussex for many years but was born and brought up in West Ham, a team I still support. My wife Jean and I moved to Haywards Heath in 1982 and then to Plumpton Green in 1986 the year our daughter Laura was born. We moved to Newick in 1992 and our daughter attended Newick Primary School and Chailey Comprehensive. My wife who was a teacher, taught at Newick for a while and at other schools in the area. I started my career as a ladies hairdresser working for my father in his salon in Crawley and then went into the insurance industry working for Pearl Assurance. I was asked if I would stand for election as 8 District Councillor for Newick when the standing councillor retired and was elected in 2004. I was then asked if I would consider standing for the County election in 2013, I said I would and was elected in 2013 as County Councillor for Newick Wivelsfield, Plumpton, Chailey and Ditchling. I will stand again for election next May. I was a member of the Cabinet on Lewes District Council responsible for Waste & Recycling and during my time I introduced the weekly collection of food waste. We were at that time also looking into the collection of garden waste, this is still being considered. I am no longer on the Cabinet but am adamant that Lewes District should always continue with a weekly waste collection from your door. As a part of my County responsibilities I have been appointed to the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Authority. This entails sitting on committees that decide on such things as the possible merger with the Police and moving headquarters from Eastbourne to share premises with the Police in Lewes, a cost saving exercise. The moving premises has been decided but the merger with the Police is still a very hot potato with the Police and Fire Fighters Unions. I have also been appointed as the County representative on the South Downs National Park. The main activity I get involved with is Planning. Lewes District is designated as the Planning Authority for many of the decisions made within our area. I am Vice Chair of the L.D.C. Planning Committee, every three weeks we make decisions relating to the S.D.N.P.A. Like Wivelsfield, Newick has been producing its Neighbourhood Plan. I fully supported the plan and my wife who is a Newick Parish Councillor sat on the Steering Committee. The Plan was “made” (adopted) in July 2015. If elected again next year I look forward to serving as your County Councillor and working with your Parish Council for another four years.
