THE MONKEY CAT
A focus on sourcing fresh local produce, local wine, beer and spirits.
ith lights strung
between lush trees and
smiling faces passing
by, Lincoln Way has long been the
heart of downtown Auburn. Monkey
Cat, a restaurant named after an
elusive exotic creature from old tales,
has been serving Auburn’s visitors and
locals alike for 13 years.
Owners Jim and Trish Bril moved
from San Francisco shortly before
they bought the 120-year-old building
that they would later transform into
Auburn’s own continental bistro.
Those who are familiar with the town’s
history know that this historic building
once served as a general store. Today,
the original flooring reminds customers
that the dedication to serving the
community is quite literally the
foundation of Monkey Cat.
The Bril’s work closely with their
culinary team to craft seasonal and
sustainable menus, while integrating
as many local ingredients as possible.
Jim admits that while the menu
changes often, there are just some
staples that stick around simply
because they are in high demand
among the regulars. These more
popular dishes include the delicately
grilled duck breast with a light ginger
mandarin sauce and the charbroiled
rib-eye served with a red wine herb
jus and tenderly roasted potatoes—is
your mouth watering yet?
In addition to the bold, fresh fare, there
is also a heavy focus on local sourcing.
Monkey Cat has over 30 wine and beer
selections, and out of this extensive list
a majority of the wines are from Placer
County and 4 of the beers on tap are
locally brewed.
Monkey Cat boasts a dog-friendly
outdoor patio and an elegant private
dining room. Events such as wedding
