On top of fitting in a trip to the gym, 

sending that last-minute email, rounding 

up homework, packing lunches 

and finding shoes that match, eating a 

healthy breakfast can be a challenge 

for everyone. However, eating smartly 

in the morning helps adults and kids 

concentrate better and resist the urge 

to reach for energy drinks and sugary 

treats later in the day. 

The following are a few tips that will 

help you and your family fuel up for a 

long day: 

Plan Ahead 

Stocking your kitchen in advance makes 

it easier to grab something healthy. Bake 

a batch of whole wheat muffins or pancakes 

and freeze them, make your own 

trail mix and portion it into single servings, 

or freeze smoothies in mason jars 

that can be defrosted the night before. 

Overnight oatmeal is a favorite at my 

house. Mix 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats, 

1/2 cup milk or yogurt in a mason jar, 

and stir in 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and 

1/4 cup of berries or sliced bananas. 

Cover and let the mixture sit in the refrigerator 

overnight. You can add a drizzle 

of agave nectar for sweetness and try 1 

teaspoon of chia seeds (the night before) 

for a creamy texture. Experiment with coconut 

or almond milk, add crunchy toppings, 

pumpkin puree or applesauce to 

find your favorite combination. 

Think Savory 

Ditch the sugary cereal box (and 

mid-morning crash), and grab a quick 

savory meal with last night’s pasta; leftover 

chicken wrapped in a tortilla; or 

a grilled cheese, egg and ham breakfast 

sandwich. Add nuts, cheese or 

steamed broccoli to oatmeal, or slather 

whole wheat toast with avocado, olive 

oil and a pinch of sea salt. From breakfast 

tacos to bagels and lox, you may 

find that something savory is easier to 

stomach in the morning. 

Breakfast Bowls 

Nutrient-rich and fun to eat, breakfast 

bowls start with a base (cooked rice, 

quinoa, black beans, steamed sweet 

potatoes, Greek yogurt, oatmeal), and 

then toppings like fresh fruit, steamed 

veggies, herbs, nuts, chia seeds, eggs, 

salsa and/or granola are added. Just 

use your imagination! Try cooked 

quinoa topped with black beans, a 

scrambled egg, sliced avocado and 

salsa, or vanilla yogurt with sliced kiwi, 

mango, berries and a sprinkle of cocoa 

powder. 

Make It Quick 

Unless you are an early riser, breakfast 

is not the time to try out a new 

recipe or bake a fussy soufflé. For 

tasty, fast fuel make the little ones a 

“banana dog” with peanut butter, 

banana slices and raisins on a whole 

wheat hot dog bun. Whip up a quick 

smoothie with some nut butter or protein 

powder, or spread a whole grain 

tortilla with low-fat flavored cream 

cheese and sliced fruit. Mix some applesauce 

into a cup of cottage cheese 

and sprinkle with granola for an easy, 

protein-packed meal. For eggs in an 

instant, scramble two eggs with a 

pinch of salt and pepper and 1 tablespoon 

of milk in a 12-ounce coffee 

mug (or other microwave safe dish) 

and microwave for 45 seconds. Stir, 

and then microwave 30-45 seconds 

more until eggs are set. 

Quinoa Zucchini Quiche 

These protein-packed individual 

quiches can be made the day before 

and quickly warmed in the microwave. 

Ingredients: 

2 cups cooked quinoa 

2 eggs, beaten 

1 cup grated zucchini, excess 

water squeezed out 

1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese 

1/2 cup grated Asiago cheese

Quinoa zucchini quiche is a brain-power 

breakfast that packs a protein punch. 

Directions: 

Prepare quinoa according to directions 

on package. Cool slightly, and mix with 

remaining ingredients. Grease muffin tin 

with cooking spray and fill with mixture, 

topping each with a little cheese. Bake 

at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until 

quiche is set. Makes 8-10. 

Microwaved 

Oat Berry Muffins 

Ingredients: 

1 egg 

1/4 cup quick cooking oats 

1 tablespoon berries 

1 teaspoon brown sugar 

Dash of cinnamon 

Directions: 

Mix together egg, berries and 

oats, and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. 

Microwave for one minute 

or until set and firm to the touch. ª

Society, the colon cancer death rate in 

this country could be cut by more than 

one-half if Americans simply followed 

recommended screening guidelines. 

Early detection and treatment are critical. 

If caught early, colorectal cancer 

is 90 percent curable. If pre-cancerous 

polyps are found during screening, 

the disease is often altogether 

preventable. Because colorectal cancer 

can develop without any signs or 

symptoms, a colonoscopy could serve 

as a lifesaving test.

by removing precancerous polyps 

during the exam. For patients of average 

risk with no family history, it is widely 

recommended that screenings for colon 

cancer begin at age 50, with follow-up 

screenings every five to 10 years, even 

for people who feel perfectly healthy. 

If you have a family history of cancer, 

are experiencing pain or bleeding, or 

a previous screening revealed polyps, 

your doctor may recommend that you 

be screened earlier or more frequently. 

The colonoscopy is the gold standard 

of screening for colorectal cancer. You 

do not need to feel embarrassed or 

ashamed during a colonoscopy. It is 

your doctor’s job to perform this lifesaving 

screening, and every effort is 

made to help patients feel comfortable 

during the painless procedure. 

In preparation for the procedure, 

you’ll be asked to follow a clear liquid 

diet the day before. This means 

only water, clear broth, soda, tea, 

coffee (without milk/creamer), clear 

juice (without pulp), Jell-O, ice pops 

and other flavored drinks. You’ll be 

given instructions on using a laxative 

mixture to empty your bowel so that 

your colon can be viewed clearly 

during the test. 

During the colonoscopy, your doctor 

will look at the inner lining of your 

large intestine, which includes your 

rectum and colon. A thin, flexible tube 

called a colonoscope is inserted while 

you are semi-sedated. Most patients 

have very little awareness that the 

procedure is taking place. Generally, 

a colonoscopy is done within an hour. 

Along with functioning as a screening 

test to check for cancer or precancerous 

polyps in the colon or rectum, a 

colonoscopy can also help find ulcers, 

tumors and areas of inflammation or 

bleeding. It is important to be screened 

for colon cancer even if you are not 

currently experiencing symptoms or 

signs of polyps or cancers. ª

A House Divided 

Probate Disaster

Is it true that when my husband dies our home automatically 

transfers to me even though my name was never included on the property 

deed? There is no simple Yes or No answer. Florida Homestead Laws can be 

very complicated and problematic for intended heirs. Consider the following 

client example. 

When Mary married Joseph he owned his own home outright. It 

was Joseph’s second marriage. Mary and Joseph had two children together 

and he also had two children from a previous marriage. In the interest of 

their immediate family, Mary suggested that Joseph add her name on the deed 

to their house. Joseph told Mary that there is no need to spend money to 

change title to the deed because the state of Florida recognizes Mary’s right 

of survivorship, meaning she will automatically inherit the Joseph’s home 

outright upon his death. Joseph was completely wrong on Florida law and 

following his death, his mistaken belief complicated Mary’s and their children’s 

lives as well as the lives of the children of Joseph’s first marriage. 

It was never Joseph’s intention to divide the family home by 

unintentionally giving an interest of it to children of a previous marriage. It 

was always his intention for Mary and their 2 children to own the home should 

they survive him. For his failure to understand property law or having any 

estate planning documents that would transfer the home to Mary, the 

home would now be divided between Mary and their 2 children and the 

2 children of Joseph’s from a prior marriage. 

Mary had to make a decision on how to hold her household 

together. Because Joseph died without a Last Will & Testament, Mary was 

required to probate the family home by hiring an attorney to manage a 

Probate in court. This process took her almost a year to conclude the transfer 

of ownership. During the process Mary was required to choose one of the 

following options. Either option forced the condition of a House Divided. 

Option One was to accept a life estate interest in the home which 

would allow Mary to live in the home until her death but the house would be 

titled in the names of her children and the children from Joseph’s first marriage. 

Mary would neither be able to sell the home nor refinance it because she 

would not own it. Furthermore, if Mary were to move out of the home she 

would give up her right to the life estate. 

Option Two was to receive partial ownership together the Joseph’s 

4 children from both marriages. Although Mary would be entitled to own a 

50% interest, any of the children, hers or those from Joseph’s first marriage, 

could attempt by law to force the sale of the property. Unless a court order 

states otherwise, any final decision to sell the property would require the 

consensus of all 5 owners. 

Had Joseph simply added Mary’s name to the deed, there would 

have been no need for Probate and Mary would have owned the family home 

outright without sharing it with the children of Joseph’s previous marriage. 

Before you unintentionally impact the 

inheritance of your family home by causing a 

House Divided, consult with an estate planning 

attorney to prepare a will, trust, life estate deed 

or some other type of estate protection.

• All classified employees will receive 

an average of a 2.2 percent 

(or a minimum of 31 cents) increase 

added to their hourly rate of pay. 

• During the 2015-16 and 2016-17 

increases, the new OCPS minimum 

was raised to $10 per hour with no 

experience credit given. As part of this 

year’s tentative agreement, employees 

will be moved to the same years of experience 

credit, up to five years, that 

they were at before these increases 

occurred. 

• With the combination of the raise 

and the experience credit adjustment, 

this year’s increase will range between 

31 cents and 81 cents per hour. 

• Employees must have worked at 

least one day over half of the 2016- 

17 work year to be eligible for this 

increase. 

• A $500 one-time-only bonus will 

be paid to all classified employees. 

• Employees must be in an active 

employment status as of the day of 

payout to receive the salary increase 

and/or the bonus.

at work locations on or about Aug.

n WOCC building getting 

revamped 

West Orange Chamber of 

Commerce officials announced 

that its board of directors approved 

plans to revamp the chamber’s 

headquarters in its central location 

on State Road 50 in Winter 

Garden. The improvements to the 

chamber building, which was last 

renovated in 1998, will help the 

organization lead the west Orange 

business community in meeting the 

challenges of a dynamic business 

environment. 

In anticipation of the continued 

strong growth of the business community, 

the organization is seeking 

to create a state-of-the-art interior 

with expanded meeting areas, newmember 

service stations, upgrades 

to the building’s exterior, and accommodations 

for a growing staff to 

meet members’ needs. The cost of 

the expansion is $450,000, which 

will be funded through community 

support, along with a significant 

contribution of the organization’s 

own funds. To date, WOCC has 

lead gifts of $125,000 toward 

the “Growth Matters” capital 

campaign.

this renovation as we celebrate 45 

years of facilitating opportunity in 

west Orange County,” said Stina

n Valencia students 

and staff rides free 

Valencia College and Lynx signed 

an agreement that allows the college’s 

students and employees to ride the 

Lynx bus system for free. Currently, approximately 

650 passengers ride the 

bus to and from Valencia’s campuses 

each school day, riders who might 

not otherwise have transportation to 

classes and work. Under the agreement, 

Valencia will provide funding 

for bus service for its students and 

employees, to include all Lynx routes 

and NeighborLink routes during times 

Lynx is in service. Lynx will also add 

a bus route to Valencia’s Lake Nona 

Campus, rerouting the existing Link 

406 from downtown Orlando to Lake 

Nona. Previously, there was no bus 

stop at the Lake Nona Campus. 

To ride the bus, all students and 

employees have to do is show their 

Valencia ID card, which will have a 

sticker provided by the college that’s 

good for one academic year. Stickers 

will be available beginning Aug. 23 at 

any Valencia campus security office.

n Record-breaking pet 

adoption month 

Orange County Animal Services officials 

announced that 922 adoptions 

— 473 dogs and 449 cats — took 

place in the month of July, the highest 

number of pet adoptions during 

one month in the agency’s 48-year 

history. The record was especially 

rewarding since the shelter reached 

capacity in early July with more than 

500 animals in its care at once. The 

spike in population prompted officials 

to place an urgent call for adoptive 

homes to the community and rescue 

partners, which was clearly heard. 

“Nine hundred twenty adoptions in 

one month is an incredible milestone 

to have achieved,” said Southwest 

resident and Orange County Mayor 

Teresa Jacobs. “This record-breaking
