Marking the 68th birth
anniversary of Selim Al Deen, a
six-day festival titled, “Selim Al
Deen Utsab 2017” will commence
today. The drama doyen, who
made significant contribution to
Bengali drama in the post-Tagore
era, was born on August 18,
1949 in the Shenerkhil village of
Sonagazi Upazila, Feni.
The festival will be
inaugurated in the morning
through placing wreaths at the
resting place of the playwright at
Jahangirnagar University. With
Dr Salimullah Khan presenting
a paper, a seminar will also take
place at the Seminar Room of
National Theatre Hall today,
at 3pm. Afsar Ahmed, Lutfor
Rahman, and Sohel Hasan
Galib will also participate in the
seminar as speakers.
On August 19, an art
competition will be held at the
lobby of National Theatre Hall
starting from 4pm followed by
an inaugural ceremony, and
the Selim Al Deen Awards 2017
conferring occasion will start
from 6pm. Later, Dhaka Theatre’s
stage production, Dhaboman will
be staged.
On Sunday, Chandraboti
Kotha, a play by Bodhon
Theatre will be staged at the
National Theatre Hall, while a
discussion on Selim Al Deen’s
works and songs will take place
at the Studio Theatre Hall,
simultaneously. Later, Bangolok
will stage Rupchan Sundorir
Paala.
Dhaka Theatre’s
Nimojjan, Drama and
Dramatics Department of
Jahangirnagar University’s
Shopnoramonigon and Mahakaal
Natyasampradaya’s Neelakhyan
will be staged at the National
Theatre Hall on August 21, 22,
and 23, respectively.
Dhaka Theatre, Bangladesh
Gram Theatre and Selim Al
Deen Foundation have jointly
organised the festival in
cooperation with Bangladesh
Shilpakala Academy.•
Emma Stone named top
earner of 2017

Emma Stone has been named
the best paid female actor of
Hollywood in 2017, in the Forbes’
annual list of top earners.
The La La Land star made a
total of $26 million in the last 12
months, the majority of which
came from her Academy Awards
winning performance in La La
Land. The musical romance made
over $445 million, worldwide.
The 28 year-old star recently
spoke out against the pay
disparity of Hollywood, claiming
that her male co-stars had often
taken cuts to ensure equality.
Stone said, “In my career so far,
I’ve needed my male co-stars to
take a pay cut so that I may have
parity with them.”
“And that’s something they
do for me because they feel
it’s what’s right and fair. That’s
something that’s also not
discussed, necessarily: that our
getting equal pay is going to
require people to selflessly say,
‘That’s what’s fair,’” she added.
In the Forbes’ list, Emma Stone
was closely followed by Jennifer
Aniston with $25.5 million,
most of which came from her
endorsements.
The top earner from last year,
Jennifer Lawrence is currently in
the third place. With $24 million,
which is almost half of her
previous year’s earning, reflects
her participation in slightly smaller
films, such as Darren Aronofsky’s
horror movie – Mother! and the spy
thriller – Red Sparrow.
Melissa McCarthy and Mila
Kunis have made it to the top five
on the list, as well.
Emma Watson has secured
the sixth position on the list,
after her starring role in Beauty
and the Beast, even though
her performance in the cyberthriller,
The Circle wasn’t much
appreciated at the box office. The
Harry Potter star is followed by
Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett,
Julia Roberts, and Amy Adams in
the top ten.
Emma Stone will next be seen
alongside Steve Carell in Battle
of the Sexes, a true-life tennis
drama, and is currently filming
a dark Netflix comedy, Maniac,
along with Jonah Hill.•
