The other main difficulty security installers
previously faced when installing analogue
systems was having to run both a coax cable to
transport the images back to the recorder and a
power cable to provide power to the camera.
With the recent introduction of Power over Coax
(PoC) this problem is removed and only one
cable is required for both images and power;
something which hasn’t previously been
possible with legacy analogue systems.
I’m not surprised that
analogue camera sales are up,
given that many camera
manufacturers have added HD
analogue technology into their
product offering. The
introduction of this
technology, along with availability of a full suite
of cameras, has provided a means for
organisations to upgrade their cameras to HD
without needing to re-work the architecture of
their video systems.
Many UK sites have been faced with the very
high cost of converting to an IP topology which
would have meant replacing all of the existing
cabling, cameras and recorders. However, by
retrofitting their current system with HD
analogue cameras they can use the existing
infrastructure and still attain much better video
quality than they’d had previously using
traditional analogue cameras.
There are differing views about the impact
this will have in the long run for the video
market. Some studies have indicated that it will
be just that - a spike in analogue sales until the
analogue retrofit market is fully realised.
While it is not anticipated that this
technology will be used for many new
installations, I think retrofitting will keep the
analogue camera alive and well for many years
to come.
HD analogue systems are go!
Around two years ago if you
had asked me whether or not
HD over analogue would of
taken off to the extent it has,
then I would have given you a
very different answer than
asking me today!.
In the last two years we’ve seen a huge
investment in technologies, that allow HD
images over coax infrastructure leading to
breath taking results, while using cutting edge
technology that is being continuingly improved,
developed and expanded.
We are now at the stage where UHD images
can be captured using cost effective devices at
low installation costs, making this a very
attractive option if an IP system is not needed or
the site is legacy fit out where the cost of recabling
would be costly, disruptive or
impractical.
In the UK we still have a high proportion of
sites that have been cabled, using traditional
methods such as coax and twisted pair cabling.
Using Balun devices or a HD analogue system
allows the installer to swap the front and back
end devices out, while seeing fantastic results
with powerful back end devices that can support
functions such as analytics to give installers
more flexibility.
Units today are based around Penta-brid
technologies, where a mixture of signals can be
inputted into the system allowing the users to
mix and match and stage the upgrades as
needed. This is also a great way for installers to
keep systems up to date, without the need for in
depth knowledge of IP systems that traditionally
would need to be deployed for higher end
applications. So the less tech savvy amongst us
still have a chance to compete in today’s market
place. I can clearly see why HD analogue
continues to grow without any signs of slowing
down.
Alastair McLeod –
Veracity UK
When IP cameras first arrived,
they were expensive and the
complexities of networking
were beyond many traditional
installers. However, the
images provided by the higher
resolution devices were compelling and prices
