To compound the issue further, these security
systems (including fire detection) have advanced
beyond all recognition in the last decade. If you
went along to IFSEC International and FIREX in
London a few months ago, you will have seen the
diverse range of technologies on display such as
Video Surveillance Systems (VSS) with HDI, CVI
and TVI cameras, 4K and 8K monitors, cybertools,
drones, analytical software, biometric
access controls, wireless intruder alarms and
fully integrated systems controlled by a central
command and control point.
Am I eligible?
The criteria for being on the list includes: a recognised industry relevant
qualification at QCF level 3; a sound working knowledge of electrical
/electronic principles; a minimum of 12 months practical experience; be of
good character – without criminal convictions for dishonesty, assault or
sexual crimes. Two personal references are also required and registrants
must maintain a CPD record to demonstrate their ongoing learning and that
their knowledge is up to date.
As is common with registers of this nature, registrants will be subject to an
ethics code and disciplinary process.
As the security and fire sectors move
increasingly towards integration, competent and
demonstrably qualified and vetted systems
installers and engineers are needed to ensure
the design, installation, servicing and operation
are fit for purpose, comply with current
standards and meet the actual end user’s needs.
In response to this huge change in the
market and in the absence of any meaningful
regulation or code of conduct governing
installers and maintenance technicians, a
register has never been more necessary.
For many years, concerns have been
expressed, all too often within the industry’s own
ranks, of the absence of recognised professional
standards and protocols with regard to security
systems. This has led to the proliferation of
unqualified, and potentially unscrupulous
people operating in the field. Despite these
protestations, there has (until now) been no
change, or means to introduce minimum
standard setting for individual practitioners.
