The Eclipse and Albert Einstein<br />
What did the eclipse have to do with Albert Einstein?<br />
May 29, 1919<br />
Well it wasn’t the 2017<br />
eclipse, it was the 1919 eclipse<br />
98 years ago. In his 1915 general<br />
theory of relativity, Albert<br />
Einstein predicted that the sun’s<br />
gravity should distort spacetime<br />
in its vicinity. Stars behind the<br />
sun would appear in different<br />
positions with respect to each<br />
other during an eclipse, than<br />
they would on an ordinary night<br />
when the sun is nowhere in<br />
sight.<br />
This theory, as opposed to<br />
Newton’s static space theory,<br />
brought much debate among<br />
the scientific world. An eclipse<br />
would allow the scientist to see<br />
the stars and from a picture, see<br />

results of the stars behind the<br />
sun in different positions than<br />
normal, which would prove the<br />
theory.<br />
Astronomer Arthur Eddington<br />
set up two expeditions to photograph<br />
an eclipse, but due to<br />
World War I, he was delayed.<br />
After the war, Eddington travelled<br />
to the island of Príncipe<br />
off the west coast of Africa to<br />
watch the solar eclipse of May<br />
29th, 1919.<br />
Due to his photo, Einstein’s<br />
theory was confirmed and he<br />
became known to the general<br />
public, where before only scientist<br />
were aware of him and<br />
his theory. The theory has been<br />
confirmed several times since.<br />
