Interview | Farah Al Humaidhi MASTERCLASS IN HOME DECORATION designing and now here I am as an Educator, perhaps teaching interior Design is what I am passionate about.” Farah Al-Humaidi talks to bizbahrain about her passion for creation and art that has somewhat serendipitously led her to teaching, in an effort to share her passion and craft with others. How did your interest in Interior Design begin? Last month Kuwait-based interior designer, Farah Al-Humaidhi conducted a series of workshops on “Design your home” and “Psychology of Colors” at Le Meriden, Bahrain. Organised by SRJ Events, the classes were an outstanding success as commended by all attending. An education in interior design from the American University of Sharjah, with years of experience, and an innate Farah Al Humaidhi Interior Designer 32 November 2016 passion for design and construction has led Al Humaidhi to pursue the creation of the brand, Pieces By Farah. The Pieces By Farah brand is a functional mix of pieces that allows you to customize them by individual taste. “Years of experience in design and a passion to create something functional and unique, led me to pursue the creation of my brand, “Pieces by Farah.” Over the years I found myself looking beyond Design is probably in the blood, I have a family that is into it entirely. My dad being an Engineer and my mom running a design publication company, could have been the source. And as I grew up I was nurtured in a design environment. I don’t believe in a single Idol concept, lot of things have influenced me over the years. I have been inspired by nature, by my surroundings, by success stories and anything that brings out positivity. Who has been the biggest inspiration and Motivator? Already mentioned. Yes like I stated I don’t believe in single Idol concept.
All my family, close friends have been my motivators and inspirations. I have learned a lot from them. I understand that no one is perfect and so I derive my strength from the diverse characteristics found in different people around me, plus from the world around me. Tell us about some of the designers and creative minds that have influenced your work. I am spurred by designs rather than by designers. It’s the design that ignites me. As designers, we are continuously changing in terms of preference. The change of your preference is a reflection of growth. I am purely inspired by the passion behind any kind of design. What brought you to Bahrain? Tell us about your work here? During my early career as a designer and then my move to create my very own brand "Pieces By Farah", I came to understand business in depth. With the MBA in hand, I now knew how to bring the idea to the marketplace. The emerging power of social media enabled me to impart my experience and knowledge to those who came seeking advices about designing but did not have time to choose it as a career. As time flew I moved on from being a designer to an entrepreneur and now finally to an educator. In fact, I believe that teaching interior design is the thing perhaps that I might be the most passionate about. As I started giving out more workshops the need to expand became inevitable and thus I now have workshops across GCC. Bahrain is one of the countries where I conduct such workshops biannually. What has been your experience with the workshops that you are conducting? What does someone who is attending take home from the experience? I have a positive vibe after the workshops, because design though essential to any society is not always attended to and so an average person tends to get confused as design could be quite abstract at times. Now for a person who attends this workshop the intention would not be probably to take it up as a career but rather continue it as a hobby. And that’s where I come in, my focus is on educating the untrained and uninitiated to intricacies of design without getting into the depth so that they can surface through it and yet comprehend the beauty of everything. They not only take home my vast experience but also the knowledge on how to get things right. Depending on each workshop they gain insight, but the basic stress is that now even a layman can confidently proceed with renovating a room, a floor or even their entire villa at their will. They not only learn how to renovate but also learn How to Do It Yourself. Do you find Bahrain an exciting market for a designer with enough potential for growth? Yes, Bahrain is definitely an exciting market for a designer moreover it’s also a hub to KSA market. As an emerging market Bahrain has high potentials. Are there enough educational courses and opportunities? In design field there are good Universities, however there are many who do not intend to take it up as a career, either they do not have that time to invest in or they do not want to make it a profession. My workshops are aimed at those who have the desire but don’t have the time or do not want to invest that much time. These workshop target such audiences who are interested in carrying it as a hobby or for professionals who are looking for further development. Our short courses are adaptable according to one's taste and preference. What next? What are your plans for the future? My desire for the near future is not to set up a college but rather an institute that’s an hub of short courses. Because in this world, people are multifaceted, they not only perform well on professional front but also accomplish spectacularly with their hobbies too. So for those who want to have their hobbies fine-tuned in design field this would be the ideal destination. The Person Behind the Event SHATHA RASHID AL JALAHMA SRJ Events Tell us a little about SRJ and what you do. SRJ started as an idea when I have attended few courses outside of Bahrain and thought it would be nice to be able to share the same learning experiences with my people in Bahrain, so i decided to bring to Bahrain courses, learning experiences and even artworks and artists, that I believe in and would like to share with others, and that is the way all has started. Who are some of your main clients? As I am very picky about whom should I bring to Bahrain and what value they are adding to the market, I have been slow, but steady in my choices, in the last 3 years i have organized the workshop of Eng. Farah Al Humaidhi 3 times and managed to get Mrs. Hala Kazim from UAE to do her first workshop ever in Bahrain in May 2016. I also organized 2 art exhibitions for 2 amazing artists (Kiki Bokassa from Lebanon and Zaman Jassim from KSA). in 2007 and 2008. as you can see, i have been doing this for sometime but on very slow basis, now I have decided to take it further and establish my own company SRJ) that caters for the same. How did you discover Farah Al Humaidi? Funnily enough, through Instagram! She had "Pieces by Farah" which is a home accessories line she has created and I fell in love with, and wanted to exhibit it in Bahrain at that time. That didn't happen for many reasons but we did manage to come up with the course idea and it has been doing amazing since then. What does SRJ have planned next? What are your plans for the future? Now that SRJ is becoming a more official set up, I have set a yearly plan of workshops, exhibitions and courses that I am hoping would add the value I was seeking from the beginning to the market and to my clients.
