Who’s what? from a neighbor’s roof. But the goal is for all the macaws to be as free-flying as Papi. Is that a parrot on that pirate’s shoulder? Aren’t Jimmy Buffett fans known as parrotheads? Well, yes, sort of, although both the buccaneer bird and the concert costume are more properly macaws. Nevertheless, it turns out that popular culture, which freely uses the word “parrot” for a wide range of birds including macaws, cockatiels, lories and cockatoos, has it right. Without getting into all the scientific names and niceties, here’s the rundown. Parrots are a very large and diverse group of birds. Think of “parrot” as your umbrella bird, covering more than 370 species and found in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. Under that umbrella are macaws, parakeets (those small, pretty birds in gilded cages), lovebirds, cockatiels, cockatoos and lories (birds, not English trucks, which are spelled with two r’s). Macaws are a group of parrots with large bodies and heavy bills that live in the Americas, mainly the tropical and subtropical regions. But just to confuse matters, there are some small, parakeet-sized macaws! Beyond flying Flight rehabilitation is only one part of the care that Patti and Howard provide for the macaws and their other birds: Buddy the parakeet; Gemma the Sun Conure; Bob the Quaker Parrot; and cockatiels Tilly and Tango (plus Chicklet, the parrot-perch chicken). The couple regularly orders seed in bulk from an outfit in Oregon, and their grocery list is larger than it might be because of sharing their fruits and vegetables with the birds. “They will eat most of what we eat,” says Patti, noting that they eat even meat and particularly like ramen noodles (without the seasoning) and beets. They are not supposed to have shellfish, though, and any treats of peanuts must be sparing, as they can have a moldy toxin. Tilly, a gray-and-white cockatiel that Patti and Howie brought with them from Texas, has had a baby, which they named Tango. Cockatoos are the relatives from Australia and nearby islands, and cockatiels are smaller members of the cockatoo family. Both are identified by their showy, expressive crests. Lories and lorikeets are colourful, small-to medium-sized parrots, also from the Australasian region. Our best advice? If it’s big and colourful, go ahead and call it either a macaw or a parrot. For everything else, you can’t go wrong with “pretty bird.” a Jody Rathgeb Gemma is a sun conure, a type of parrot. Caring for so many birds is difficult, but it is obvious that Patti and Howie love it and would like to expand their efforts. “My dream would be for this to be a sanctuary,” Patti says. “If anyone has birds they can’t take care of, 18 www.timespub.tc
