3 ABOUT RGMVP Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojana (RGMVP) is a community-based flagship program that aims to reduce poverty and address social issues by activating the innate potential of women living in rural and marginalized sections of Uttar Pradesh, India. RGMVP has been operating in Uttar Pradesh since 2002, organizing women into Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to enhance their economic and social inclusion and also encourage them to demand their rights and entitlements from the government. RGMVP BELIEVES IN INNOVATION AND SCALE BY DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY. WE ARE TRYING TO INSPIRE PEOPLE TO CHANGE THEIR MINDSET BY CHANGING THE TIME HORIZON AND THE DIRECTION OF THEIR INNATE ENERGY IN ORDER TO HELP THEM OVERCOME POVERTY AND EXCLUSION. Sampath Kumar, CEO ABOUT THIS DOCUMENT Going beyond mere micro-finance schemes, RGMVP has innovated the conventional SHG Model to emerge as a vibrant and inclusive system of leadership and holistic empowerment. The following document aims to capture the unique designs and processes built behind the RGMVP model, as they are made evident through implementation of the Uttar Pradesh Community Mobilization Project (UPCMP). UPCMP is a project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in partnership with the Public Health Foundation of India, Population Council, Community Empowerment Lab and Boston University, Center for Global Health and Development. Through the activation of RGMVP’s SHG platforms, UPCMP has developed and successfully scaled-up a package of interventions to change health behaviors, improve delivery systems to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates. Since 2011, tremendous impacts have been felt across the state, in which hundreds of women have been able to turn life-saving knowledge into practice. The insights and data from this document seek to highlight these impacts, while also serving as a repository of information for development practitioners, researchers and academics who are interested in new approaches to large-scale health behavior change and improved service delivery.
