Dear Elk Families,
Centerville Athletic Boosters
More than half of the high school and middle school student population in Centerville City Schools participate
in one or more of the sports programs offered by the district; a strong indication our community values and
supports the continuation of a strong sports program within Centerville City Schools. The value to the student
population from participating in the sports programs offered by the district ranges from being a part of a team,
being physically fit and improving skills in a game, becoming a leader in an athletic program to earning a
college scholarship as a result of the higher level of training and competition that our district enjoys.
The Centerville Schools Athletic Booster Club is a charitable organization whose mission and purpose is to
support the athletic programs offered by our district. With the ever-changing funding landscape for school
districts all over the country, it is now more important than ever for booster groups such as ours to work even
harder to continue providing these opportunities for our students. For over 30 years, the Athletic Booster
Club has worked to enhance the District’s athletic programs by providing supplemental funding and making
substantial contributions to the capital improvements in all our sport facilities. We have contributed to the
improvements in the weight room, the tennis courts, both gymnasiums, the soccer/lacrosse field, the baseball
field, and the football field. The Centerville community needs to continue its efforts now to help sustain these
popular athletic programs.
Please consider joining the Centerville Schools Athletic Booster Club if you have not already done so. It
is easy to join and there are a number of levels in which to participate. Visit the Booster Website at www.
elkboosters.com for membership information. Any support you can provide is greatly appreciated!
at all football games, the band competes locally and nationally in the Midstates Band Association
and the Bands of America circuits. Last year, the band was a Midstates Open Class Champion at
Centerville Boys Soccer
A Letter from Coach Monbeck...
As the 45th year of Soccer at Centerville
High School begins, we welcome three new
staff members. Centerville Soccer Alumni
Bradley Schulter and Slater Morgann will
take over the coaching duties of the JVB
team, while Wichert de Wit will lead the JVA
team. Their leadership, attention to detail and
commitment to development will help grow the
quality of players within the program.
The 2017 Varsity team is led by sixteen
seniors and eleven returning varsity players.
Competition for playing time will be fierce as
the junior class is eager to leave its mark on
this team.
After a heartbreaking loss to Mason in last
year’s tournament, this team is using that to
fuel their desire to get back to the top and
bring a District Title back to Centerville.
Our program motto, “A Winning Tradition,”
does not come without sacrifice. The boys
are working hard and pushing each other to
continue this tradition.
Good luck to all CHS Athletes!! GO ELKS!
Recapping the 2016 Season
The 2016 varsity squad finished the season 11-6-2
and repeated, for the third straight year, as GWOC
Conference Champions. The team fought hard as
a unit and battled through numerous injuries to
make it to the their third straight district finals.
Celebrating 40 Years of Elk Soccer
This year’s varsity squad will add eight new
players to the eleven returning ones who are eager
to play soccer well into November.
This year we are celebrating the 40th season of
Girls Soccer at CHS. All of the players recognize
the tradition of excellence that the program has
maintained during this span. Beginning with the
mantra TEAM FIRST, they have been working
hard to build upon last season’s success and to
maintain the strong sense of tradition.
The coaches have set high expectations for
excellence, both on and off the field, and they
will continually push the players to represent the
school and community proudly.
We look forward to the coming season, and we
are grateful for the support from the community.
2016 Girls Golf Season in Review
Centerville Girls Golf
The Lady Elks Golf Team won the GWOC National East Division and the GWOC Conference title for
the eleventh consecutive year. The Elks placed first in the Dayton Sectional, setting a school record
(296), to qualify for their 24th consecutive trip to the Southwest District Tournament. They went on
to place first at Districts/Regionals for the second year in a row to qualify for the State Tournament.
After a rainout on the first day, the Lady Elks went on to place 9th at the OHSAA Ohio State
Tournament in Columbus.
The team went 10-0 in head-to-head competitions and 113-12 in tournament play. The Lady Elks
set CHS records for Low Tournament Round and Low 9-hole Match Score. The girls won seven
school tournaments, placed second twice, third once, and 9th at State.
Individually, Centerville varsity players received several awards in the 2016 season. Four players
made First Team GWOC National League: Senior Amanda Hayes; Junior Megan Munn; Sophomores
Kayla Ramsey and Marissa Wenzler. Junior Molly Jasina made Second Team and Senior Lan-Anh
Doan was Special Mention. Hayes, Ramsey, and Wenzler were also named to the First Team GWOC
All-Conference. Hayes (1st Team), Wenzler (1st Team), Ramsey (1st team), and Munn (2nd team)
were named to the All-SW District Team. Amanda Hayes was named GWOC Conference Player of
the Year.
Looking forward to the 2017 Season
The Elks lost two seniors, Amanda Hayes and Lan-Anh Doan, from last years’ season. Amanda will
continue her golfing career at Ohio University in the fall.
The Lady Elks continue to play their home matches at Yankee Trace and again will host the annual
Lady Elk Invitational in August, which draws some of the top teams in Ohio. The Lady Elks bring
back four varsity starters from last season. There will be several players battling to fill out the varsity
roster and we hope to be highly competitive in the GWOC, SW District, and at State .
Centerville Boys Cross Country
2016 Cross Country Season in Review
The Boys Cross Country team had a great 2016 season. The team opened their season at the
OHSAA Pre State Invitational where they gained valuable race experience earning third place. The
team earned several third place finishes throughout the season, but their 5th place finish (out of 39
teams) at the prestigious Spartan Invitational marked a turning point. Two weeks later the team won
the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
With a strong core of returning lettermen, the team went on to win the Divisional GWOC title and
the District Championship. The team’s return to the Regional Championships marked the program’s
28th consecutive appearance where they finished in 3rd place out of 20 teams, qualifying to the Ohio
State Meet. The team went on to finish 11th at the State Championships.
Looking Ahead to 2017
This 2017 Cross Country season marks the 53rd edition of our Boys XC program. This year’s team will be
led by captains Matt Hall, Matt Nerlinger, and Jack Welsh.
The 2017 team returns all members from last year’s State Qualifying team: Ben Burkett, Adrian Bostwick,
Andrew Craig, Jeremy Davidson, Connor Downs, Matt Nerlinger, and Jack Welsh.
Issaac Einstein, Kyle Bucklew, Andrew Cameron, Austin Kick, Lucas Eggert, and Matt Dickson will be
adding strength, experience, and even further depth to the already strong ranks as the team sets their
sights on another trip to the State Meet. The team will be traveling out of state to the competitive Trinity
Invitational held at Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, KY and to the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh
University.
The Centerville Boys & Girls Cross Country Teams are hosting the Saturday Night Lights Invitational on
September 23th and the GWOC Championship on October 14th at Centerville High School. Please come
out and show your support!
Centerville Girls Cross Country
The harriers of CGXC wrapped up their 2016
campaign in dramatic fashion following a strong
season of top finishes in large races in Michigan,
Ohio, and Pennsylvania. During the championship
portion of the season, the team was able to capture
a divisional GWOC Championship, a Regional
Championship, and the team’s third consecutive
State Championship. The State Championship
team included Grace Kilroy, Savannah Lowe,
Rachel Whitehead, Kerri Walsh, Kelli Walsh, Dalia
Einstein, and Sophie Hippenmeyer. Grace Kilroy
was awarded All-Ohio recognition for her 19th place
finish (18:29). Additionally, six of these athletes
were eligible (freshman are not eligible) for the Ohio
Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches’
Academic All-Ohio award. These athletes must
have a 3.5 GPA or higher and compete at the State
Championships. All six athletes obtained this
recognition and hold a 3.95 GPA or higher! We are
so proud of these athletes’ hard work and dedication
both on and off the course.
Looking Forward to the 2017 Season
The outlook for the team in 2017 looks bright as
all seven of last year’s State Championship Team
return. In addition to the Top 7, the team is led by
six outstanding senior captains: Megan Clements,
Emily Horwath, Megan Kafka, Megan Knauer,
Maddie Shooter, and Kelli Walsh. These leaders
have led a consistent group of athletes through
their summer training and are anxiously awaiting
the opportunity to begin racing near the end of
August. The captains successfully chose a theme to
accompany and guide their season.
BE THE CHANGE will be a driving force for the team
throughout the fall as they embrace the three Core
Values of CGXC: PASSION, UNITY, and COURAGE.
The team, seventy-one athletes strong, will work this
season to strive to be a strong example of Elk Pride
while representing our outstanding high school and
supportive community.
We encourage everyone to support us by following
us on Twitter @CHSGirlsXC, through our website at
www.centervillegirlsxc.com, and by attending the
meets on our schedule.
this year. Being in my 3rd year of coaching at
Centerville, our family has been close and now
with only 4 returners we will have mountains to
climb, but with the talent of these young ladies
those mountains will be little bumps in the road.
The Elks Coaches are pleased to see six out of
eight of last year’s seniors are now playing college
Volleyball. Centerville is proud to announce
two of the current Varsity girls have College
commitments, MacKenzie Conner-Cleveland State
(DI) and Scottee Johnson-University of Michigan
(DI).
West Alabama, we see the JV team having a very
successful season. A quote that we are using this
year is “Giving everything you have is the only way
you will get everything you want”-Author Unkown
Go Elks!! EPND!!
Centerville Sports Medicine
The sports medicine program at Centerville High School allows our students to gain
valuable hands-on experience with our athletes. Students in this program volunteer in
the athletic training room under the guidance of our full-time trainers. They take care
of the basic needs of practice, game, and competition preparations for the athletes.
Each student is assigned to one sport and follows that team to home and away
games.
