We would like to welcome all of you to the Centerville City School District where athletics serves 

as yet another tool to prepare our students to excel in life when their high school experience ends. 

We pride ourselves in teaching our core values to our athletes which focuses on to helping them 

to always compete with a sense of humility, embrace and respond to adversity in an appropriate 

manner and continuously strive to reach excellence. These are very exciting times in the Centerville 

School District and for Centerville Athletics. We are continuously trying to improve our facilities and 

provide our athletes with all the resources they need to strive for excellence. These improvements 

are made possible by the tremendous support we receive from the Centerville Community and 

I want to personally thank all of you for your continued and unwavering support. We are proud 

members of the Greater Western Ohio Conference and this past school year won the GWOC 

Eastern Division All-Sports trophy for the 17th consecutive year. We would like to remind all of 

those in attendance we all share a role in the development of our student-athletes competing today 

and we ask you choose to behave in a manner which reflects the positive values we are expecting

Greetings from the 

GWOC Commissioner 

Greetings!! On behalf of the Greater Western Ohio conference I would like to welcome you to today’s 

event. The participants today have been working hard and preparing for the season. Needless to say 

they are thrilled to have you in attendance. 

This is a year of change for the GWOC as we transition to two divisions for the 2019-2020 school 

year. The divisions will be named American and National. While we are excited for the current setup 

of the GWOC this will be the final year that the GWOC offers a division format. The conference will 

be moving to an eight team membership setup beginning fall of 2020. This transition will allow the 

GWOC to meet the needs of membership and solidify the conference for the foreseeable future. 

The Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) has built a distinguished and proud history of 

academic and athletic excellence over the years. It offers students the best opportunities to compete 

in an elite academic and athletic conference. It also provides a forum for fans of the GWOC to 

support the best high schools, and competition, in the state. 

We recognize that competition can be fierce but we must strive to promote and encourage 

sportsmanship to the fullest degree in all of our athletic events. Proper conduct and respect for 

all are actions to be demonstrated before, during, and after all sporting events and activities. We 

ask for your support with this initiative by being a role model and positively supporting the event’s 

participants. Sportsmanship is everyone’s responsibility - please do your part.

Centerville Athletic Boosters 

Dear Elk Families, 

More than half of the high school and middle school student population in Centerville City Schools 

participate in one or more of the sports programs offered by the district; a strong indication our 

community values and supports the continuation of a strong sports program within Centerville City 

Schools. The benefits to students from participating in the sports programs range from being a part of 

a team, being physically fit, improving skills in a game, becoming a leader in an athletic program, and 

possibly earning a college scholarship as a result of the higher level of training and competition that 

our district enjoys. 

The Centerville Schools Athletic Booster Club is a charitable organization whose mission and purpose 

is to support the Centerville athletic programs. With the ever-changing funding landscape for school 

districts all over the country, it is now more important than ever for booster groups such as ours to 

generate funds to continue providing these opportunities for our students. For over 30 years, the 

Athletic Booster Club has enhanced the District’s athletic programs by providing supplemental funding 

and making substantial contributions to the capital improvements in all our sport facilities. We have 

contributed to the improvements in the weight room, the tennis courts, gymnasiums, the soccer/ 

lacrosse field, the baseball field, and the football field. The Centerville community must continue to 

help sustain these popular athletic programs.

CENTERVILLE BOYS BASKETBALL 

Welcome! 

Thank you for your support of Centerville Schools and the Boys Basketball program. We are happy 

to see you and hope you enjoy tonight’s game! 

Our guys have worked very hard this off-season to put themselves in a position for another exciting 

year of Centerville Basketball. Our schedule will be tough again with non-conference games 

against successful teams from last year that are returning some of their top players - including 

defending state champions Moeller, Trotwood, and Trinity Catholic, KY. This year, as in most, our 

league schedule will be as difficult as any in the state. Springfield and Wayne look to again be the 

top two teams in the conference, but could be challenged by a very talented Beavercreek team. 

Fairmont will also be in the mix, returning several players seeing significant playing time last season. 

Our guys are looking forward to the opportunity to compete at a high level against the best 

players that our schedule has to offer. 

The graduation of 9 seniors, who won 22 games a year ago before falling to eventual state champ 

Moeller in the Regional Finals, leaves a huge hole to fill. The graduating seniors will be missed 

both on the court and in the locker room. Seniors returning this year are Mo Njie (3rd), Drew 

Thompson, Andre Zimmerman. Mo is our only returning player that saw significant playing time last 

season. Juniors vying for varsity time this year will be Reese Clark, Max Knauer, Tre Johnson, and 

Jayson Hayes. Rich Rolf returns for his sophomore season after suffering a knee injury last year 

just as he was entering the varsity line-up. Other underclassmen that have a chance to contribute 

to the varsity team this year are kebba Njie (So), Ryan Keifer (So), Cam Smith (So), Quinn Hafner 

(So), Chase Harrison (So), Tom House (So), Gabe Cupps (Fr), and Emmanuel Deng (Fr). 

Establishing consistent expectations and holding teammates accountable will be an important part 

of this group’s season. If our leadership approaches the season with a sense of urgency and can 

develop the trust we need to challenge each other daily in practice, we have a chance to be competitive 

with everyone on our schedule.

GIRLS BASKETBALL 

Welcome to the 2019-2020 Lady Elks Basketball Season. This season presents many challenges. 

Each opponent we face has quality players and coaches, which will provide excellent competition 

every game night. We welcome you to all our games as we hope to provide excitement in 

each game. We pride ourselves in playing hard on the floor and look to make it an exciting season. 

Our schedule is year in and year out is one of the most difficult in the entire state. We play each 

team in our division of the GWOC two times this season along with five crossover games against 

other GWOC opponents. We will also play state powers in Gahanna Lincoln, Mount Notre Dame, 

Newark and Toledo Notre Dame. We also travel to Delaware to participate in the Diamond State 

Classic. Each game will provide a test and coming ready to play is essential for success this season. 

The Lady Elks return seven letter winners from last season: Gabby Rittinger, Emma Stanley, 

Grace Stoller, Kenzie Smith, Amy Velasco, Cotie McMahon, and Molly Scott. The team continues 

to work hard to integrate the players new to varsity this year with the experience of returning 

players those players include Ashley Ballard, Audrey Albro, Quinn Watercutter, Megan Taylor, and 

Kendal George. This team should provide excitement to the Elk Fans. 

We wish all of the Centerville Teams good luck this winter and we hope to see you at a game this

The Centerville Jazz Band is Centerville High School’s nationally recognized and award winning Marching Band. Their unique 

sound and visual design have been entertaining audiences and adjudicators year after year. With over 180 members, the 

Centerville Jazz Band is one of the largest student organizations on campus. This past summer the students began working on 

their 2019 competition show entitled, “Rhapsodic”. The show features familiar and exciting music from George Gershwin’s 

“Rhapsody in Blue”, and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”, with several other themes mixed in. 

In addition to performances at football games, the band travels locally and nationally in a variety of competitive circuits. Last 

year, the band was a 2nd place finalist at the Bands of America Oxford Regional, and was a 12th place finalist at the Bands of 

America Indianapolis Super Regional. At Bands of America Grand Nationals, the Centerville Jazz Band advanced to semi-finals 

competition finishing 26th among a field of over 100 bands. The Centerville Jazz Band was recently selected to perform 

nationally in front of an audience of MILLIONS in New York City in the 2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!

CENTERVILLE ICE HOCKEY 

Centerville Hockey Again welcomes a new Head Coach and New 

Assistant Coaches. 

Coach Dylan Abood is no stranger to the Centerville Elks. Last year 

Dylan assisted on the bench and behind the scenes with the Elks where 

he built strong bonds and rapport with the team. This year he steps into 

the head coach position as Aaron Quick had to continue on in his Air 

Force career. Dylan comes with a rich hockey history, having played 

22 years of competitive hockey, 3 years of Junior Hockey in the North 

American Hockey League (NAHL), and 4 years of Division 1 College 

Hockey at USAF Academy. 

Coach Abood’s Message to the team: 

It’s my first year coaching here at Centerville HIgh School but I am 

looking forward to watching the team grow not only in the sport of 

hockey but off the ice as individuals as well. My hope for the team is to 

create a fun, passionate, and competitive team-centric environment. My 

goal for each player is to develop their skills and character both on and 

off the ice through discipline, hard work, sacrifice, and teamwork. 

Assistant Coach Ryan Wagner is excited to be back in the world of 

High School Hockey. He is a Centerville resident with a growing family 

and love for the sport of hockey. He played hockey on travel and 

house leagues until he finally enjoyed his high school years on his high 

school’s Varsity Hockey team at North Olmsted. 

Assistant Volunteer Coach Paul Weisgarber is another U.S. Air Force 

Academy grad who not only lettered every year at the academy but also 

volunteer assistant coached with them. He is excited to be able to help 

with the Elks this year and make it their best year yet.

ELKS HOCKEY HISTORY 

A Rich Tradition of Success 

The Centerville High School Varsity Hockey Team has 

a rich history of success. Founded and recognized 

in 1973 as an OHSAA sanctioned varsity sport, 

CHS Hockey quickly established its name in Ohio 

by winning a State Title in 1979 under Coach Keith 

Harring. In the years that followed, Centerville 

continued its standard of excellence. 

The Tim Evans Years 

In 1988, Tim Evans took over the program and in his 

16-year tenure established one of the most respected 

and dominate varsity teams in Ohio. Under Coach 

Evans, the Elks won 10 League Titles, 9 trips to the 

Elite Eight of State, and 2 Final Four appearances. 

The Andy Sloan Years 

In 2003, the closing of South Metro (then called 

“The Stick”) for one year caused the team to move 

afternoon practices to Hara Arena. This change in 

time and location caused Coach Evans to choose 

to retire. Former Elk player Andy Sloan took over as 

head coach. Under Coach Sloan the Elks remained 

competitive in the SWOHSHL 

Adam Frank Years 

In 2007, Adam Frank, a former player under Coach 

Tim Evans, was named Head Coach. In Coach 

Frank’s second season, the 2009 Centerville Elks 

went to the State Final Four for the first time in 12 

years and only the 4th time in the program’s long 

history. Under Coach Frank, the Elks won 1 League 

Title, 2 Division Titles, 2 trips to the Elite Eight of 

State, and 1 Final Four appearance. 

Simon Excoffon Years 

In 2013, Simon Excoffon was named Head Coach 

of the Elks Hockey team. Excoffon led the team to a 

record of 36-19-4 during his time as coach. During his 

second and final season as coach, Excoffon’s team 

set a team record for shorthanded goals and tied the 

record for shutouts in a season, a record that had 

gone unmatched for 18 years. Centerville finished the 

2014-15 season ranked 9th in the District and 27th in 

State but made an early exit in the District tournament 

losing to top-seeded Dublin Jerome in the second 

round. 

The Chabut Years 

The Elks, coached by Craig Chabut, competed in 

the Southwest Ohio High School Hockey League 

(SWOHSHL), which included teams from Dayton, 

Cincinnati, and the surrounding areas. In the State 

Tournament the Elks competed against SWOHSHL 

and Columbus teams to earn a birth in the Final Four. 

A Year of Mathis 

As Craig Chabut retired to raise his two new beautiful 

daughters, Centerville welcomes Scott Mathis as 

our head coach. Prior to assuming his current 

position, Scott served as an assistant coach for the 

Beavercreek High School varsity hockey team (2016- 

2017). Having a rich and in-depth experience in 

hockey from his own youth to beyond the collegiate 

level, Scott hopes to bring the program to a new level 

of intensity, excellence, and excitement. 

A Quick Year 

Coach Scott had a permanent change of station in 

his Air Force career and we said goodbye to one 

Academy grad and hello to another. Coach Aaron 

Quick comes to us from Montana where he coached 

Varsity High School Hockey at Great Falls Americans 

from 2014-2017. Coach Scott is excited to watch 

the Centerville boys mature, grow, and develop into 

a strong team of both excellence on the ice and in 

character. 

Abood’s Year 

As Coach Quick followed his Air Force career as 

did his predecessor, he left behind him a legacy of 

excellence and determination. Stepping into the role 

of head coach is Dylan Abood. Dylan also comes to 

us by way of the United States Air Force Academy. 

He not only brings a hope to grow the program with 

excellence, but a desire to set it up as a team that 

gives back to its community while playing great 

hockey.

Terry Wielend Sportsmanship Award / Hobey Baker High School Character Award 2019 

Dominik DelGhingaro 

At the conclusion of each year’s hockey season, the Centerville Hockey Association has presented 

the Terry Wieland Sportsmanship Award in the memory of Terry. Terry Wieland was a student at 

Centerville High School from 1978-1980. He was an excellent student and a goalie for the CHS 

hockey program. In July 1980, Terry was struck by lightning. In his memory, from 1983-2007, the 

Terry Wieland Sportsmanship award has been given to the Senior Varsity hockey player who has 

best represented the outstanding qualities that were exemplified by Terry. 

Beginning in 2008, the memory of Terry’s character and sportsmanship are reflected in the State’s 

Hobey Baker High School Character Award. In memory of All-American hockey and football athlete 

and WWII hero, Hobey Baker, the Ohio High School Athletic Association, in cooperation with the

finished in fourth place at the 

2019 OASSA State Championship 

in the Division 1 Non- 

Mount category. Going strong 

for over a decade now, competition 

cheerleading has earned 7 

UCA National titles, 14 GWOC 

Central division titles, 4 Overall 

GWOC Champion titles and 

a number of notable top-five 

placements at the OASSA State

The Centerville Coeds Dance Team is entering their 60th year with 28 talented dancer 

athletes. The high school program consists of a JV and Varsity team, under the direction of 

CHS Dance Program Director Tenille Redmond. The Coeds are led by Sarah Izor (Hip Hop 

Coach) & Rachel Feldmeyer (Pom Coach), both which are Centerville Coeds alumna. 

The Coeds compete at regional, state, and national level dance competitions.

The Centerville Athletic Booster Club is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to supporting 

the athletic programs and athletes in the Centerville School System. 

The Booster organization helps out where our tax dollars and school budgets fall short. In the 

past decade, we have funded over $750,000 in additional athletic programming for the young 

people in our middle and high schools.
