An archway crafted from rustic
branches serves as an entrance to a
secret garden, rich with papaya and
guava trees, chaya bushes, lemon
grass, sugar cane and more than 100
other species of fruits and vegetables.
A waterfall trickles quietly through the
center of the rock-lined spot, while
Winnie the donkey brays noisily in
the background, keeping watch over
the goats. A greenhouse using aquaponic
technology produces catfish,
lettuce and herbs. This multifaceted
food forest in Winter Garden will
soon be open to the public.
“It’s kind of a botanical garden,
except it is all edible,” said Josh
Taylor, strolling through the garden
and stopping to sample a Surinam
spinach leaf.
Every foot of the 1.5-acre farm is
put to careful use, from the compost
bin that produces black soldier fly larvae
to feed the chickens to the fences
laden with true yams, passion fruit
and grapes.
Josh owns Do Good Farm with
his wife, Kelly, and a recent grant
has provided an opportunity for the
Taylors to open a store on the property.
It was originally slated to open in
mid-October, but Hurricane Irma put a
heavy hit on the garden. Josh is now
shooting for a mid-November grand
opening and plans to open to the public
one to two days a week initially.
Currently, Moringa leaves, fresh basil
and other produce make their way
into salads and smoothies at Axum
Market Cafe in Dr. Phillips, and,
once production allows, Josh plans to
supply a number of other area restaurants
with fresh produce. In the future,
he hopes to partner with local schools
to bring his farm-to-table produce into
the cafeterias.
“The goal is for this to be a place
where people can buy fresh fruits and
vegetables,” Josh said.
The farm chooses a diversified selection
of crops that are grown without
pesticides, chemicals or fertilizers.
“Growing food the way nature intended
is better for the earth and for
our bodies,” Josh said.
In addition to produce, the farm
store will sell edible plotted plants in
an effort to encourage people to shift
away from traditional landscaping
toward growing their own food. The
farm’s goats will provide milk and
cheese for sale.
Josh and Kelly started Do Good
Farm in 2012 in an effort to develop
a low-cost, low-tech, sustainable food
model that doesn’t require outside
input like fertilizers and extensive irrigation.
Planting a carefully selected
variety of fruits and vegetables increases
the quality of the soil and resulting
harvest, and protects against
losing the entire harvest if one crop
goes bad.
“The goal is to create long-lasting
solutions by putting this same system
down in the middle of Africa or India
or wherever, and have it continually
produce food,” Josh said.
By moving beyond shipping rice and
beans to developing countries, communities
are empowered to feed themselves
and take the surplus to market.
So far, Do Good Farm has planted
a sustainable farm at an orphanage
in Honduras and is working on starting
a large farm in Burundi, Africa.
It costs a lot of money to change the
world, Josh acknowledges. By opening
a store to the public, Do Good
Farm will be able to plow the proceeds
back into bringing sustainable
food systems to inner-city food deserts
and poverty-stricken nations.
“There is no reason that anyone on
this planet should go hungry,” Josh
www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x October 19 - November 1, 2017 x 5
said. “God has provided a way to
THOUGHT
grow food. We just need to teach people
how to do it.”
Veteran’s Vision to Become a Reality
Windermere’s Military Memorial
by Karen Nimetz
Ninety-two-year-old former U.S.
Navy Seabee and World War II
veteran Bill Criswell has spent
the past five years working toward
erecting a military monument in
downtown Windermere.
“I have long envisioned a memorial
that would honor both the veterans
and the active duty service men
and women of all five branches of
the military,” he said.
Criswell’s vision has become a
reality with the help of architect
Stephen Withers and designer
Stephen Fasen. All three men
are longtime Windermere residents,
and all have served as past
presidents of the Rotary Club of
Windermere. The three men donated
countless hours to creating the
impressive installation that will be
located on the outer edge of Town
Flag Plaza, in front of Windermere
Town Hall.
“Bill Criswell is a gentleman whom
Stephen Withers and I both mutually
respect,“ Fasen said. “Bill has organized
and participated in countless
projects that have benefited our community,
including Home At Last, a
program that builds homes for combat-wounded,
permanently disabled
veterans of the Iraq-Afghanistan
wars. Stephen and I knew this memorial
project was a dream of Bill’s
for many years, so we were determined
to come up with a way to get
it done.”
Together, the three men came up
with the idea of a monument made up
The Life Estate Deed
Protecting Your Home From Creditors And Probate
by: Kristen M. Jackson / Attorney
One of the most commonly asked questions by
those implementing their estate plan relates to how to
protect the family home. There are generally 2 main
concerns; avoiding Medicaid Claims for nursing
home costs, and avoiding Probate, the legal process
for the payment of debts and distribution of property
at death. One effective way to protect your home
from creditors and probate is through the use of a Life
Estate Deed, also known as a “Lady Bird Deed”. Let’s
examine how this strategy works.
If you or your spouse enters a nursing home
and applies for Medicaid benefits, there are limitations
on the amount of income and assets a married couple
can retain and still qualify for those benefits. If you are
single, or if both you and your spouse enter a nursing
home, even fewer assets can be retained. Essentially,
the Medicaid program is intended for use by those who are unable to pay for their care.
Certain assets are considered exempt from Medicaid claims such as your home
which is protected if your spouse or a dependent relative continues to reside in the home,
or if you (or, your designated representative) states an “intent to return” home. The
homestead will remain exempt during your lifetime if the above criteria is met, and
will not be subject to Medicaid claims at your death if you have a surviving spouse or a
dependent who is at home. However, if there is no healthy spouse or dependent living
in the home, or if the healthy spouse predeceases you, the home may become subject to
Medicaid claims at your death.
What happens if you are single, own a home, have children and are planning to
enter a nursing home? If you deed the home to your children in the hopes of protecting
it from Medicaid claims, you will have made an uncompensated transfer and a
penalty period will result, for example.
Edith transfers her home worth $99,000 by quitclaim deed to her daughter
so she can enter a nursing home and apply for Medicaid. Edith soon after applies
for Medicaid. Even though her daughter is now the owner of the home, under the
Medicaid rules, Edith will be disqualified from obtaining Medicaid benefits for 12
months based on the Florida penalty divisor of $8,862 per month and will need
to pay for her nursing home costs for that 12 month period. In addition, Edith loses
her property tax exemption and constitutional homestead protections because she
no longer owns the home. Furthermore, Edith loses all control over the home, she
cannot sell it or change the deed.
You can protect your home and still qualify for Medicaid benefits, for
example. Wanda is a widow, owns a home and has 2 children. Wanda is faced with
entering a nursing home but is afraid she will lose her home to Medicaid claims.
Wanda transfers her home, by Life Estate Deed, to her children, but reserves the right
to live in it for her lifetime and reserves other powers, including the right to sell the
home. Wanda retains her homestead creditor protection and property tax exemption.
In addition, the home is exempt from Medicaid claims during her lifetime, and her
children will receive the home free of Medicaid claims at Wanda’s death. As
an added bonus, the home will pass to them automatically, without the need for
Probate.
While the Life Estate Deed is not appropriate in every situation, if you transfer
your home by Life Estate Deed, you can retain control and use of the property
while at the same time protecting it from Medicaid claims and you can alter the deed
at any time or sell the property if you wish. In addition, the title to the property
automatically passes free and clear to those you have named on the deed avoiding
the need for Probate.
each of the first five pedestals will be
military. Atop the sixth pedestal will
be a plaque with the Great Seal of
the United States honoring all of the
men and women who have served
and continue to serve the U.S.
In order for Windermere Council
members to truly visualize the concept,
Withers built a 3-D model of
the monument and plaques.
“Initially, it was not easy to get the
memorial approved,” Withers said.
“It took a couple of months longer
than we hoped. In the end, we were
able to partner with the town of
Windermere and the [Rotary Club of
Windermere] to achieve our goal.”
Even with all the pro bono efforts
of Fasen and Withers, the cost
for the project was estimated to be
around $25,000. Through fundraising
efforts and generous donations,
the team exceeded its financial goal.
“The [Rotary Club of Windermere]
is in charge of the funds,” Fasen
(L. to r.) Stephen Withers, Bill Criswell, Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn, and
Stephen Fasen stand at the future site of the Windermere Veterans Memorial.
said. “Any remaining money will be
allocated by the Rotary club to various
veterans charities.”
“This monument will not cost the
residents anything,” Criswell said. “It
is a gift to the town of Windermere.”
The official unveiling of the
Windermere Veterans Memorial
will take place on West Main Street
in front of town hall on Veteran’s Day,
Nov. 11. The dedication ceremony
will be at 11 a.m., in accordance
with the Armistice. Retired U.S. Army
Brig. Gen. George A. Landis will
be the special guest speaker, and
patriotic music will be provided by
the 45-member Orlando Concert
Ceremonial Band. The Rotary club
will provide coffee and doughnuts
at 8:30 a.m., and there will be a
community walk starting at 9:30
a.m. Military vehicles will be on
display, and there will be a variety
of activities taking place throughout
most of the day.
“We will have all five branches of
the military represented,” Criswell
said about the dedication. “There
will be a service man/woman of
each branch standing in front of one
of the monuments. [Windermere]
Mayor [Gary] Bruhn will talk
about Veterans Day and will speak
about each branch of military service
as each monument is unveiled.”
All three men acknowledged
Mayor Bruhn as an integral part of
the memorial project.
Withers said the mayor “worked
on the design, helped raise funds,
worked with the council and town
staff, and is a major contributor
himself.”
Mayor Bruhn said the memorial
“will be a wonderful addition to
our town. It is an honor to recognize
all the men and women who
have served and continue to serve
our country with honor.” ª
Strong. Leader. Powerful. Prior
to just a few decades ago, these
words were almost exclusively used
to describe men. Women in the
U.S. were relegated to the background,
left at home to take care
of the family while men made their
way in the world. Males were the
leaders; females were the caregivers.
Throughout history, there have
always been women who “broke
the mold.” Not all women were
born to be followers, after all; and
even in a repressed society, those
women stood out. However, among
the many steps women in America
have taken to wrangle their independence,
there are a few significant
events that paved the way for
all women to be free of the shackles
that chained them to the men in their
lives.
Voting Rights
As early as the 1800s in America,
women strained against the constrictions
put on them. They refused
to have their voices silenced and
made strides to be heard. The
Seneca Falls Convention in 1848
was proof of this, being the first
women’s rights convention to be
organized by women. Attended by
300 men and women, it featured
the signing of the Declaration of
Rights and Sentiments by 100 of
those present, men and women
alike.
In its closing remarks the document
declared “because women
do feel themselves aggrieved, oppressed,
and fraudulently deprived
of their most sacred rights, we insist
that they have immediate admission
to all the rights and privileges
which belong to them as citizens
of these United States.” It was too
controversial to gain much public
support; however, the groundwork
was set for those who would take
the sentiment of equal rights even
further.
The first female U.S. presidential
candidate was seen in 1872.
Victoria Claflin Woodhull ran
as a third-party candidate, elected
by the Equal Rights Party, against
Gen. Ulysses S. Grant (R) and
Horace Greenley (D). Her campaign
trail was riddled with intrigue,
eliciting a degree of scrutiny
that was unrivaled. She was even
arrested just a few days prior to the
election for publishing a series of
scandalous and accusatory articles
about prominent men in the newspaper
run by Woodhull and her sister,
Tennessee Claflin.
There is no way to tell how many
votes Woodhull ultimately received,
ballots bearing her name went uncounted,
and some districts eliminated
her from the ballots altogether.
This election saw another woman
step up. Susan B. Anthony chose
to challenge the 14th Amendment
to the Constitution, which stated
all persons born in the U.S. are
citizens, claiming that since women
passed the Senate and the House of
Representatives in 1972, it has yet to
be ratified in all states.
With the many strides that had
been taken until this point, women
in the workforce were still a rarity.
“Housewife” continued to be the
dominant role for American women
throughout the ’50s and ’60s. They
were pretty much expected to marry
in their early 20s, immediately start
having babies, and spend the rest of
their lives taking care of their homes,
husbands and children.
The feminist movement of the ’60s
and ’70s began to alter the expectations
of women’s lives. Although, at
that time, women were still legally
bound to their husbands — not having
rights to their husbands’ earnings
or property, whereas men had access
to their wives’ money — and
were relegated to a limited choice
in careers. Women were most often
elections. Yet, it wasn’t until 1920
that, with the 19th Amendment to the
Constitution, women were granted
the right to vote in the U.S. This was
a crucial victory and a turning point
for women. However, women being
allowed to vote didn’t automatically
make them equals in the eyes of their
male counterparts. Just as the ending
of slavery didn’t abolish racism,
it was still a long road for women to
be seen as equal to men.
The first version of the Equal Rights
Amendment was introduced in
1923. It stated, “Men and women
shall have equal rights throughout
employed as secretaries, nurses or
teachers. Change came about slowly,
but steady progress was made as
more and more women joined the
workforce, giving rise to new challenges,
as well.
One of the more glaring grievances
became an inequality of pay.
Female workers were paid less than
men doing the same type of work.
In an effort to combat this disparity,
Congress passed the Equal Pay
Act of 1963. It promised equitable
wages regardless of the sex of the
worker. Although the EPA was an unequivocal
victory in women’s rights,
equal pay is a battle still being
waged in many places today.
The ’80s were a time of more
leaps in females taking leadership
career roles and asserting themselves
as not only capable of keeping
up with their male coworkers,
but oftentimes surpassing them and
rising to the tops of their fields. From
what was previously a minor number
of women in the workforce and
landing governmental roles, became
a surge of women who chose to pursue
careers.
A couple of notable pioneers
were Sandra Day O’Connor,
who became the first woman to
serve on the Supreme Court in 1981,
and Sally K. Ride, Ph.D., the first
American woman sent into space
in 1983.
Known as The Year of the
Woman, 1992 saw a record number
of women elected to Congress,
four winning Senate elections and
two dozen elected to first terms in
the House. One of these women,
Sen. Barbara Mikulski, regarded
the phrase with contempt.
“Calling 1992 the Year of the
Woman makes it sound like the Year
of the Caribou or the Year of the
Asparagus,” she said. “We’re not a
fad, a fancy or year.”
Modern Feminism
Mikulski was certainly correct in
her statement; “women in power”

Today, women are more involved than ever in politics, claiming 104 House seats and 21 Senate seats.
was not a fad. In fact, women’s roles
only grew throughout the end of
the 20th century, giving rise to the
modern feminism we have today.
A few key legislations have aided
the cause, such as the Lily Ledbetter
Fair Pay Restoration Act in 2009,
which allows victims — usually women
— of pay discrimination to file a complaint
against their employer within
180 days of their last paycheck.
In 2013, the ban against women
in military combat positions was
lifted. This year, a Marine lieutenant
became the first female to earn the
infantry officer military occupational
www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x October 19 - November 1, 2017 x 13
specialty, graduating Sept. 25. She
has chosen to remain unnamed.
Thirty-two other female officers had
previously attempted to complete the
13-week course since it first opened
to women in 2012.
Currently, Congress boasts a record
number of women, with 104
female House members and 21 female
Senators, including the chamber’s
first Latina, Nevada Sen.
Catherine Cortez Masto.
Today women are stronger than
they ever have been. American culture
does not silence female voices,
and there are more avenues than
ever from which they can be heard.
More women are forgoing marriage
and motherhood to pursue careers,
while others are simply waiting until
later in life to settle down in domesticity.
Their leadership roles in society
have become as important as
men’s roles.
Not that the war against inequality
is won — there are yet many
battles to wage. Pay gap is still a
critical point of contention, as is
women’s education and sexual harassment,
among others. However,
thanks to the women of the past, who
achieved the unthinkable in their
times, the girls of today will grow
up with the knowledge that they are
as worthy as boys to possess the attributes
of strength, leadership and
power. ª
Balancing Act
Keeping Hormones in Check
John C. Carrozzella, M.D.,
MSMS, ABAARM, FAARFM, was a
successful orthopedic surgeon for
more than 25 years when, in 2007,
his life and career path changed
dramatically.
“My wife, Sheryl, went through
a sudden and dramatic menopause
following neck surgery. Doctors told
us nothing could be done to help
her, because this was just a natural
part of life. We simply could not
accept that.”
In searching for answers, the
couple learned about the benefits
of hormone replacement therapy.
Ultimately, they found a doctor specializing
in hormone therapy. The
treatments Sheryl received were lifechanging.
Dr. Carrozzella was so
inspired by his wife’s positive physical
and emotional transformation
that he became an advanced fellow
with the American Academy of Anti-
Aging and Aesthetic Medicine. He
then went on to receive a master’s in
metabolic and nutritional medicine
from the University of South Florida.
He also received certificates in advanced
endocrinology and sexual
wellness and health.
In 2015, Dr. Carrozzella founded
Florida Center for Hormones
& Wellness in Dr. Phillips.
“My core business is hormone balancing
in men and women, aged
45-60. Patients come in for a variety
of reasons such as fatigue, declining
libido or they simply just don’t feel
right but have been told by their doctors
that they are fine and should be
accepting of the changes in their
aging body.
“Menopause itself is a state of hormonal
imbalance,” he said. “The average
age of menopause for women
in the U.S. is about age 51, though
tonyrappa@capturevideo-photo.com
John C. Carrozzella, M.D., MSMS, ABAARM, FAARFM, develops a personalized plan
for each of his patients to address issues of hormone imbalance, sexual wellness and cosmetic
rejuvenation.
many women will experience some
form of hormonal changes in their
30s and 40s. Those changes have
a negative effect on the body’s biochemistry,
and the physiology starts
to go bad. There is medical literature
showing that bioidentical hormones
are extremely helpful and beneficial,
particularly to women. When
women are rich in estrogen, they
are significantly protected from cardiovascular
disease. There is also
medical research that suggests that
testosterone may decrease the rate
of breast cancer among postmenopausal
women by up to 60 percent.”
PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
Some people are initially reluctant
to try hormone therapy because of
the stigma associated with it.
“There are countless published studies
that are somewhat biased against
hormone therapy,” Dr. Carrozzella
said. “Part of that comes from the fact
that everyday medicine and pharmaceutical
companies don’t profit when
people are well. That’s not health care
to me. Bioidentical hormones are pretty
much standard care in Europe and
Australia. In terms of health care, they
are years ahead of us.”
One major health concern for
older women is osteoporosis.
“Traditional treatments and
medicines don’t stop osteoporosis,
they merely slow the rate of decline
down,” Dr. Carrozzella said.
“Bioidentical hormone replacement
therapy can actually increase
bone density by 3 to 5 percent
per year. The BHRT treatment also
works as a preventative treatment.
The problem is those traditional
treatments are FDA-approved and,
therefore, are covered by most insurance
companies. Most hormone
replacement therapies are not covered
by insurance. Some patients
choose a less effective treatment
plan simply because of cost. I try
to educate my patients by telling
them this is an investment in their
long-term health.”
He noted that Florida Center
for Hormones & Wellness offers a
variety of affordable payment plans.
All of Dr. Carrozzella’s patients
receive individualized and personalized
care. Treatments vary, and
exact formulations depend upon
the patient’s personal health and
individual needs. Results are usually
achieved in four to eight weeks.
However, Dr. Carrozzella noted “the
challenge is getting patients to understand
that you are trying to finetune
their specific physiology, and
that takes time.”
Aside from hormonal balancing,
Florida Center for Hormones &
Wellness offers a variety of services
and treatments for erectile dysfunction
correction, sexual wellness and
cosmetic procedures, such as Botox
Cosmetic, Vampire Facelifts, Vampire
Breast Lifts and Vampire Wing Lifts.
Florida Center for Hormones & Wellness is located
in Suite 370 at 7575 Dr. Phillips Blvd. in Orlando.
n SeaWorld rescues stranded
animals
Following Hurricane Irma in
Florida, SeaWorld Orlando’s rescue
team assisted with stranded, displaced
and injured animals.
A manatee calf was found orphaned
or abandoned in southwest
Florida, presumably as a result of the
storm. Manatee calves and moms
have tight bonds, and if a calf is
seen without a mom around for several
hours, it’s very likely that calf
has been orphaned. Since manatees
Maggie Mariolis, SeaWorld Orlando
animal care specialist, cares for a rescued
manatee calf.
nurse for one to two years, a calf
on its own has very little chance of
survival.
The Florida Fish & Wildlife
Conservation Commission rescued the
calf and transported it to SeaWorld
Orlando. Upon arrival, the animal
care team provided fluids to the calf,
as it was suffering from dehydration.
Then it was transitioned to a nutritional
formula created by SeaWorld that replicates
mother’s milk. An animal care
specialist will give the calf a bottle
every three hours for the next several
months. Orphaned calves are typically
rehabilitated until they are at least 600
pounds, which usually takes about two
to three years. At that time, if they are
deemed healthy, they will be returned
to their natural environments.
The team also assisted in successfully
rescuing and relocating six manatees
that stranded in Melbourne,
and SeaWorld Orlando aviculturists
cared for several birds blown inland
by the storm.
Prior to the hurricane, five dolphins
Connection in the Florida Keys, and
they continue to thrive. SeaWorld’s
animal experts have helped more
than 31,000 animals in need — ill,
injured, orphaned and abandoned
— for more than 50 years.
Orlando Magic President
director. One of Major League
Soccer’s most respected and progressive
minds in sports science, Tenney
joins the Magic after spending nine
years with the Seattle Sounders FC.
He served as high performance director
for the 2017 season after previous
seasons as sports science and
performance manager (2015-16) and
head fitness coach (2009-14). While
SOUTHWEST SPORTS
David Tenney
joins the Orlando
Magic as the
high performance
director.
with Seattle, the Sounders were MLS
Cup Champions in 2016, won the
U.S. Open Cup for four consecutive
years, and made the playoffs eight
consecutive years. Prior to joining the
Sounders, Tenney served as both a
fitness and goalkeeper coach with
Sporting Kansas City for two seasons.
Dr. Phillips High School’s women’s
golf team scored a runner-up
finish at the Metro West Conference
compiled by Lauren Salinero
Championship. Jennifer Jung
had the low round of the match for
the Panthers at 1-over-par-73. Skai
Emma Hallson shot a 7-over-par-79.
High School came in third with 367.
Two soccer coaches — Joe
“Coach Joe” Gitto and Scott
Green — are making a huge impact
on the Winter Garden community.
Gitto was a coach for the
city of Winter Garden’s Parks and
Recreation Department for several
years, coaching both fall and spring
seasons. The children who played
on his teams grew up together, playing
season after season until they
“outgrew” the city’s soccer league.
The city league only admits players
under age 13.
After the city declined coach Joe’s
plea to add a U-15 league, he decided
to build a new nonprofit league on
his own. Coach Joe recruited enough
players to form, not one, but four
U-15 soccer teams. He is assisted by
coach Scott, who coached alongside
coach Joe in the city league for more
than four seasons. The two men secured
a playing and practice field,
referees and additional coaches for
the league’s first season. The players
are also equipped with uniforms and
a new team logo and will receive trophies
at the end of the season.
“Joe Gitto and Scott Green are two
of the most caring, selfless men I have
ever met,” said Bonnie Dooley,
whose son plays in the new league.
“They truly, genuinely care about our
children and our community. These
men are a blessing to our youth and
an asset to our community. The world
needs more people like them.”
