Our newspaper inspires a
new generation of writers
The Weekly Times’ Assistant Editor and Sports Editor Chris Karas visited Meadowbank
Public School to talk about writing for a local newspaper.
Inspired by Chris’ talk, Year
Four student Bronte Haynes
penned these lines about
the visit...
“On Thursday, July 27
at Meadowbank Public
School, guest speaker Mr
Chris Karas visited from The
Weekly Times newspaper.
“Our student groups had
been asked to prepare three
questions for him.
“They were all very good
questions and Mr Karas answered
them all really well.
“We asked him how long
does it take to write an article,
how long has he been
writing articles for and how
did he get inspired to write
for the newspaper?”
Bronte Haynes was impressed
by the quantity of
the questions, as well as the
quality.
“When Mr Karas arrived
everybody burst out with
questions because all of the
groups had three questions
to ask and there were about
23 groups altogether.
“What is three times 23?
“It is 69! So there were 69
questions asked. Wow!
“It was very inspiring for
all of the students who were
there and everyone had lots
of fun!
“Near the end of our question
time he asked the students
if anyone would like to
have a photo taken for the
paper.
“Everyone was so eager
but only nine or 10 students
were chosen.”
Chris said that a love for
writing as well as knowledge
of the subject being written
about are essential.
“A good article should
also mention who it is about,
what happened, when it
happened, where it happened,
how it happened
and most importantly, why it
happened,” he said.
“Quotes are always good
because they put the story
in the person’s own words.”
Meadowbank Public
School recently won The
City of Ryde’s Event Of The
Year in partnership with The
Weekly Times and Ryde’s
Returned and Services
League for its commemoration
of the Centenary of
The Great War, which saw
the school community dress
in World War One era costumes.

Twenty one students
represented the College
at this year’s event with
team comprising Jarod
Baker, Harrison Gaskill

They were one of thirty
teams competing at the
university including Abbotsleigh,
St Patrick’s
Santa Sabina.
In teams of threes, students
had 90 minutes
to accurately determine
the concentrations of
various chemicals.
The young chemists
had to perform a series
of intricate procedures
which involved high precision,
followed by several
calculations.
Jarod, Harrison and
Lachlan achieved incredibly
accurate results
to clinch the top position.
In an exceptional performance
by the Holy
Cross Titration team,
the College also claimed
eighth place.
Runners up were Laurence
Kennedy, Guillaume
Stevelinck and
Matthew Carnevale with
Alexander Kennedy, Eric
Rodriguez and William
Terrence Darma, Daniel
Ianni and Jake Pap-
while Jai Coghlan, Anthony
Pirrello and Benedict
Tai came in eighth.
Victor Chan, Daniel
Keeling, Suphanpat
Makhala, Jeremy Parker,
Joshua Poole and
Darcy Van Der Zalm also
achieved commendable
results.
Special mention must
be made of Brother
Mark Ryan who mentored
and guided the
Holy Cross Titration
teams during countless
training sessions.
He was able to pass
on his passion, knowledge
and skill of titration
to the young scientists
of the College.
