SDEA BIRMINGHAM NETWORKING EVENING
On Wednesday 15th November almost 40 members,
retailers and industry professionals gathered
together for an enjoyable networking evening in the
centre of Birmingham at The Lost & Found on
Bennetts Hill.
The team from Retail Design Expo were on hand to
provide an update on the 2018 show including all
new breakfast networking and a new online exhibitor
portal (more details in article below).
SDEA provided drinks and a buffet for the evening,
with guests complimenting the relaxed nature of the
event in which many new contacts were created and
business cards shared.
Bob Garton,
Managing Director of
Glencourt Associates
stated that the
evening was:
“A good venue with
tasty food and great
company. Those members and guests who did not
attend missed a good event.”
SDEA Director, Antony Behiels, said of the evening:
“We realise that the Association cannot be totally
London centric. Our members are always pushed for
time and so we must hold events that are easily
accessible for those who are too far away from
London. Last year we held an event in Manchester,
so thought Birmingham would be the ideal location
this time. Feedback from the event has been
fantastic and we look forward to holding more events
like this in the future.”
Book now for our
Christmas Lunch
on 6th December.
BIG PLANS IN STORE FOR RETAIL DESIGN
EXPO 2018 FROM NEW OWNERS
Reed Exhibitions, organisers of Retail Design
Expo have announced plans for the 2018 show.
Since its launch three years ago the event has
had tremendous success, so now moving into its
fourth year, organisers plan to take it to the next
level.
2018 will be the first year the show is fully
organised by Reed Exhibitions: the world’s
largest event organiser. Significant investment
will be made in feature areas and the overall
look and feel of the show. The new layout of the
event means that visitors can easily navigate
around the show.
Developments
include a new
online
functionality
called My
Event. This is
an online
appointment
request and
diary tool and is accessed through the exhibitor
portal. It will give exhibitors and visitors the
ability to connect with each other and request
meetings before the show even opens.
This means exhibitors and visitors can then plan
their time more efficiently.
Exhibitors and visitors will also have the chance
to meet during breakfast on the second day of
the show. This will be an open networking event
at the venue and is an additional opportunity for
connections to be made during the event. Tea,
coffee and pastries will be available during this
session.
As well as the new initiatives, the ever popular
conference programme will return with over 75
conference sessions addressing the key topics,
issues and challenges facing the industry today.
The Innovation and Trail Awards return
highlighting new product launches within the
industry and, due to the overwhelming success
of the Visual Merchandising Awards in 2017,
they will be making a return in 2018. Other
features such as the Designer Pavilion
showcasing the best of the design consultancies,
and the stunning champagne bar will also be on
the show floor.
Sarah Adams, Event Manager for Retail Design
Expo said: “2018 is a very exciting year for Retail
Design Expo. We have listened to our audience
of suppliers and retailers to develop a show
offering for everyone. We will create an event
that visually represents the creativity that this
industry has to offer. Our audience will instantly
feel that they are part of a retail event. Our new
initiatives will provide additional opportunities to
meet at the show, whether it be through the
appointment system or face to face networking
at the show. We understand that time out of the
office must be productive, therefore we are
implementing the tools to ensure we meet this
objective”.
OAD DELIVER ON
TIGHT FITOUT TIMETABLE
In early 2017 the Imagine Group commissioned OAD to design, build and
deliver their fourth high street location in the centre of Hemel Hempstead
in a tight five week schedule.
The brief was to create an eye catching office that stood out and was like
no other estate agent office on the high street. With the use of bright LED
glass wall art panels and zebra wood laminated LED window poster units it
was an office you could not fail to notice. The cased chrome fascia
signage framed the office perfectly.
The Imagine directors were over the moon with their most iconic and
noticeable office, with the end result looking very much like the first
proposed 3d visual from OAD.
KAS Shopfittings are now holding Black SlatGrid system in stock. Popular
in the USA, SlatGrid wire panels can be used with most slatwall fittings as
well as many grid panel fittings.
BLACK SLATGRID SYSTEM NOW AVAILABLE
IN UK THROUGH KAS SHOPFITTINGS
'Our black slatgrid will appeal to those customers for whom the usual
chrome finish is unacceptable, either from a branding or environmental
impact standpoint. It will also suit those who find the smaller range of grid
fittings too restrictive.' says KAS MD Steve Brandon.
Panels come in 4 different sizes and can be wall-mounted or floor-standing
on legs. There is also a range of black slatwall fittings to compliment.
Great for pop-ups, exhibitions & trade shows, the black finish will also suit
retailers looking for a versatile urban or industrial look.
ARNO were challenged by WHSmith to create a more personalised solution
to attract consumers shopping for writing instruments in the pen
department. Using a mix of quality materials made to work with existing
instore displays, ARNO developed, manufactured and installed a new
concept by categorising the pen department to stand out in store. The new
department colour scheme gives the area its own identity within a very busy
multi category store.
ARNO CREATE A PERSONAL SOLUTION
Consultants will be at hand to assist on premium pens where there is a
the writing instruments. All the other products can easily be tried by
consumers to strengthen the customer engagement. Storage and security
has also been added to help in-store staff during busy opening hours.
More than 20 stores have been installed, with many more in the pipeline.
EXPERIENTIAL RETAIL DRIVING DEMAND
FOR MORE CHRISTMAS MAGIC
With consumers increasingly demanding more
from retailers, the industry is witnessing a move
towards the creation of more experiential in-store
environments.
However, the opportunity for brands to create
engaging, immersive and memorable
surroundings – which drive both sales and loyalty
– undeniably peaks around Christmas.
Retail design expert Michael Trevethan, from
graphic display specialist Leach Impact, explains:
“As Andy Williams famously sung – it’s the most
wonderful time of the year. And retailers, quite
rightly, tap into the opportunity to capitalise on
shoppers’ positive moods, to drive footfall, sales
and retention in the process.
Dynamic lighting that creates the illusion of movement,
such as snow falling or stars twinkling on a tree, will also be
big – usually such ‘movement’ is only achievable with an
expensive video wall.”
Contact:
t: 01484 551279
e: impact@weareleach.com
w: www.leachimpact.com
“But there’s more to creating magical displays
than just window dressing. I predict that a big
trend this winter will be the creation of dramatic
spatial areas, where ‘hero’ products and striking
graphics will take centre stage.
Movement solution specialists Movetech UK has highlighted its
commitment to advancing skilled engineers by recruiting another new
apprentice, increasing the total number of apprenticeships recruited to
four, in as many years.
NEW APPRENTICE BOOSTS
PRODUCTIVITY FOR MOVETECH
New apprentice Able Gadimoh, 19, had very little practical engineering
experience before joining Movetech UK, however his positive approach
and dedication to succeed is evident he is an extremely worthy candidate
to take on the role.
Able has enrolled with the Bolton based company on a formal engineering
apprenticeship scheme through Alliance Learning, Horwich. As part of his
hands-on apprenticeship, Able will attend Alliance Learning once a week to
further his knowledge and facilitate his awareness within the engineering
industry.
"We have a great relationship with Alliance Learning and we’re always very
impressed with the service they provide for both us as a company and our
new apprentices" says Movetech UK's Operations Director, Russell
Entwistle. "They have helped us hugely in formalising Able’s apprenticeship
scheme in advanced mechanical engineering, offering Able a structured
path that will lead to formal, universally recognised qualifications, serving
him, and us, better in the future."
Able was delighted when he was selected for the apprentice role at
Movetech UK. "I jumped at the chance to apply for the position because I
was keen to be part of a successful local company that knows all the ins
and outs when it comes to engineering and manufacturing” said Able.
He then went on to say: “Since starting a couple of weeks ago, everyone
has made me feel really welcome and I am looking forward to getting
hands on and achieving my goals, as well as helping the company to
continue to thrive along the way."
Managing Director; Tim Entwistle, is enthusiastic about the added value
the new recruit will bring to the company. "We did have an immediate need
for more skilled hands to fulfil our existing order book and to boost
production," he says. "However just as important was the need to invest in
the future or our planned growth could not occur. There is a strong desire
by the company's management team and employees to grow the business,
and to do this we must build on existing strengths and expand our
capabilities."
"Our recruitment drive has focused on finding high calibre, motivated
people with the intelligence and aptitude to learn combined with a
positive, 'can-do' attitude. We take pride in the flexibility of our workforce,
which is vital if we are to provide the high quality service we sell.”
"Over the 58 years Movetech UK (British Turntable Company) has been
trading, the skills of the workforce have evolved, such that we now have
highly versatile, competent and adaptable people capable of dealing with
whatever opportunities and challenges they are presented with. We
believe that our investment in a flexible workforce has been key to our
remaining in business though more than one recession, including the most
recent, where we implemented a survival strategy that ensured we did not
compromise on our core strategic directional goals."
The customer chose to
have applied vinyl rather
than flat cut acrylic letters
so that they could easily
update logos and wording
in future.
Due to the General
Election the official launch
of Greenspace was
pushed back by about a
month but all props and
signs were delivered by
the original agreed date
and the customer
commented that “they
look amazing” and they were “proper chuffed”.
The concept was to produce a giant map pin that was capable of
freestanding and various handheld arrow-shaped signs that were fun and
interactive. All signage and props had to be lightweight yet robust as they
would be handled frequently by school children during the course of the
campaign and be travelling all across Britain.
Display-grade polystyrene containing a flame retarding additive was
selected as the ideal material to make the signage from due to its
lightweight properties, while the additional painted finish added to its
strength.
The arrow-shaped signs, which were 30cm tall and up to 2 metres in length,
were machine cut from blocks of polystyrene and shaped to have radius
corners making them safer for members of the public to handle. The
arrows had a matt emulsion paint finish and white, self-adhesive vinyl
lettering applied to one side.
The giant pin was an impressive 7ft tall and 1ft thick and had a hollow
centre with mini arrow signs inside which were held in place by a pole that
ran through the centre of the pin. The pole was fixed to an MDF base and
was stabilised by white wedges which helped the pin to free-stand. The
NEW LOOK VM SYSTEM FOR REGATTA
COMPLETED BY LEACH IMPACT
International outdoor leisure brand Regatta has
overhauled the visual merchandising strategy at its
Manchester headquarters, with the help of Huddersfield
-based display specialist Leach Impact.
Regatta’s showroom is a regular destination for
corporate customers, keen to be among the first to see
what could soon adorn their retail shelves. But with
footwear previously housed on a dark, permanent
wooden wall, the 180sqft space struggled to do the
hero products justice.
The brand has therefore invested in a 6.8m x 2.5m
state-of-the-art bespoke display from Leach’s Product
Wall Lite range. At only 65mm thick, the streamlined
wall-mounted system integrates eye-catching graphics
with ultra-bright LED illumination and slick magnetic
shelving, for maximum impact as soon as a customer
arrives.
“Following an initial design consultation, we knew the
team was interested in the flexibility of this graphics
display alternative,” elaborated Dale Broadhead, Leach’s project
lead. “However, to meet the exact requirements of this brief, our in-house
innovation team built a number of prototypes to evaluate how to best
showcase Regatta’s footwear range.”
Regatta’s marketing director Jo Hawkins expanded: “We were initially drawn
to the system because of its brightness and large-format photographic
quality. But the construction of Product Wall Lite now allows us to change
the graphics and products as often as we like, without any external input or
specialist shop-fitting expertise.
“This means we can refresh our showroom campaigns in line with the
changing seasons, which should deliver an ongoing wow factor and a
lasting impression, much more in-keeping with what we’re trying to achieve
as a brand.”
On the back of positive feedback from visitors to the Manchester HQ,
Regatta now plans to roll the Product Wall Lite system out into its store
environments.
Established in 1981 with a 12-strong team, Regatta now has 200 stores
and concessions throughout the UK and operates in 55 countries
worldwide.
The finished solution was then installed in only one day, which included full
magnetic assembly, graphic installation and 180 shelves added and
aligned.
ECO MANNEQUIN VERSUS THE DRAGONS -
WHO WINS?
Global Display entered the
Dragons Den to present an
innovative solution for
sustainable visual
merchandising display.
As seen on BBC Two's
'Dragons’ Den', The Eco
Mannequin is truly a
revolution in mannequin
production and the Dragons
were wowed by an engaging
presentation by Group MD
Alan Pegram with an eye
catching display and an
innovative solution, featuring 'mini-me' versions of each of the Dragons -
showcasing the versatility of this product and the importance of visual
display.
Sustainability has been a focus for retailers and their merchandise for many
years, but up until now this has not been reflected in their visual
merchandising equipment and mannequins - something which Global
Display sought to change.
With major retailers having upwards of 200 mannequins per store there is a
clear need for retailers to act to improve the impact on the environment
which these products can have both before, during and after their lifetime
usage in retail interiors.
Up until now the options have been limited with solutions that limit
creativity, or require unacceptable levels of compromise in terms of the
visual aesthetics, weight or durability.
Conceiving a solution which
encourages creative thinking and
provides equivalent like-for-like
attributes to existing fibreglass
options, whilst also being
sustainable and inherently
biodegradable, not only solves the
critical challenges of sustainable
design - but begs the question as to
why retailers are not already using
these mannequins in their stores?
After facing up to a thorough grilling from the
Dragons, during which the importance of the
visual merchandising industry was called into
question - the Dragons chose not to invest in
the patented product, but clearly saw the
level of innovation that this invention
represents. Alan did not leave empty handed
however - with over 10 mannequins on
display there were plenty of spare hands to
hold onto!
The real winners ultimately will be those brands who value the sustainable
approach that customers are now demanding in their retail experiences,
with the opportunity to make a significant impact on their carbon footprint,
whilst at the same time providing customers with a more sustainable,
conscientious buying experience.
Alan Pegram, MD of Global Display
commented: "It was an amazing,
once in a lifetime experience,
which has given myself and the
team plenty to think about. On
reflection more focus should have
been placed on the importance of
making the instore experience
more inviting – and how
mannequins are intrinsic to this
for retailers and customers alike.
It’s so important that the VM
sector approaches this in a more environmentally conscious way - it’s not
often that you can build a successful business on the back of a cause and
purpose as worthy as this. The Dragons got it wrong this time....watch this
space!”
MEMBER NEWS
Superdry have reopened one of their most visited UK stores, in the
Trafford Centre, Manchester, with Unibox once again helping launch their
new store concept.
Currently in the midst of dramatic growth worldwide, Superdry are
continuing to refurbish their UK portfolio, incorporating elements of their
‘Store of the Future’ concept which debuted in the Manchester Arndale,
with Unibox developing a range of graphic displays to coincide with the
launch.
The Trafford Centre creates an annual footfall in excess of 30 million
visitors who browse the 200+ stores and 60+ restaurants, cafes and bars.
As a result this is a hugely important location for the team at Superdry, and
Unibox were trusted with delivering light boxes for a range of applications
throughout the store.
With Manchester-based
manufacturing/design
capabilities, Unibox were able
to meet Superdry’s tight
deadlines for the store launch,
followed by a dedicated
installation team mounting
each of the light boxes in
store.
The new Trafford Centre store
features a wide range of the
latest display technology - notably Uniboxʼs LED Lightboxes in multiple
shapes and sizes throughout the store, combining high quality LED
illumination and the latest UV print technology to draw the attention of
customers to featured products.
Lee Patten, Project Manager at Superdry commented: “With our recent
refurbished store, within one of the biggest shopping destinations in the
UK, it was key that every element of our Trafford Centre store was
perfect. We’re glad to say that Unibox delivered on this, manufacturing a
range of Lightboxes for different locations throughout the store on
incredibly tight deadlines, following which, their team installed each
lightbox ensuring we met critical timelines for opening. This is
another good example of Uniboxʼs ability to deliver quality, on time and as
always, the results speak for itself.”
Superdry are looking to
strengthen their
already solid position in
the UK high-street, with
sales across stores
open for more than a
year increasing 12.7%.
Another new store
format focusing solely
on Superdry’s Sports
range is planned,
reacting to the recent
boom in the ‘athleisure’
market.
“The growth predicted in the sports market is expected to exceed that of
the mainline fashion market” Euan Sutherland - Chief executive, Superdry.
With the aim of launching five Superdry Sport stores by the time Christmas
hits, it will be exciting to see how the next chapter in Superdry’s revolution
progresses.
STYLO CREATES LONDON LANDMARKS
FOR VODAFONE
Vodafone’s latest window features some of
London’s most famous landmarks. The
display features a multifaceted back wall
with a giant illuminated Vodafone logo.
The props were built in-house by Stylo using
fire retardant MDF and painted by hand.
Including a motorised miniature London Eye,
other landmarks such as Camden and Hyde Park are highlighted with LED
lights. Harrods is framed in festoon bulbs just like the landmark itself. The
display was constructed on site and installed by the Stylo team.
“I was thrilled with our latest Harrods installation. The illumination looks
amazing and the detail
on the props make it
feel more like a
miniature film set than
a window scheme.”
Global Display were commissioned by Topshop to create over 100
customised face masks and renovation of numerous mannequins in
celebration of this year’s Halloween promotion.
Working in conjunction with Vanessa Davis
(who is known as the Skultress) the artisans
at Global Display were able to bring her
makeup designs to life creating 2 styles of
masks from their existing mannequins so that
the masks could easily be removed without
damaging the mannequins. To achieve this a
mould was taken of the head, which was then
fabricated into a plastic mould for application
of the painstaking makeup detailing.
In total there were three different designs which were sent to stores in the
UK, US, Canada and the Far Fast for a multi-region combined launch.
In combination with the masks, the 14 mannequins were also hand
painted, with embellishments added to precise design layouts before
being installed at Topshop’s London flagship store on Oxford Street.
MEMBER FOCUS
During October, SDEA Director Antony Behiels
accepted an invitation to view first hand the
company’s services and facilities.
arken will be celebrating their 70th birthday next
year, having been established in 1948 and are
well known as being the creator of the ’snap
frame’ as well as their award winning POP
displays.
Their main site is an impressive 80,000 square
foot, two building location in Newmarket - just an
hour’s train journey from Central London. With
over 100 staff on site, the facilities are a hub of
activity: from filling forecourt sign bases with
concrete to meticulously assembling POP units
ready to ship direct to store.
Above: arken’s HQ in Newmarket
AN INSIGHT IN TO DESIGN
AGENCY ARKEN POP
arken have two divisions providing Poster Display
and Bespoke Display Solutions which includes
any Special Projects, each with a design led ethos
at their core. The past five years has seen strong
growth for the company, stemming from major
contracts with brands, retailers, cosmetics
houses, media companies and, of course, trade
customers.
The 360 degree process of design, artwork,
development, delivery and installation is
complemented by their new offering of the review
stage - whereby the whole process can be
subjectively looked upon and any concerns dealt
with. A constant progressive development for the
company.
Sustainability clearly
plays a key part in
arken’s business, with a
focus on the way their
staff view ‘green’ issues
and provide a
statement of intent on
reducing environmental
impacts. Their views on
sustainable design are certainly positive,
believing that a sustainable approach can provide
unique opportunities for creative expression. For
example: perhaps using alternative materials or
alternative construction solutions so they are
transported with a smaller footprint and are
simpler to construct on site.
New product development is also a fundamental
belief in the company. Staying in touch with
retailer’s needs is essential when looking for new
products. This year alone has seen four new lines
in the company’s portfolio:
Magboard, an interchangeable pavement

sign.
Free standing six-sheet lightbox, available
single or double sided for media
messages.
Bannerview, an impactful 7m x 1m
banner display for forecourts and retail
parks.
Move-it lockable, a locking poster case
forecourt sign.
During the overview it was clear the passion Paul
Smart, Business Development Director, has for
the business and its customers, especially trade
clients who rely on arken to provide the complete
package from design to manufacture and usually
with challenging lead times.
Paul says, “Flexibility is key and we have the
processes in place that allows us to scale up or
down depending on customer needs”. In winning
contracts he continues “tell me the budget you
have in mind and we will do our level best to meet
the cost by value engineering the product design.
arken are fortunate to have existing clients that
provide the nucleus of our business, however we
wish to continue our growth plan and win new
business based on new product development,
service levels and turnaround.”
FOCUS ON GDPR - THE BASICS
The EU 2016/679 regulation (also known as the
General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR)
covers the protection of people with regard to
the processing of personal data, and the free
movement of such data. It applies to both
personal data and sensitive personal data –
known as Special Categories of Personal Data
under the new regulation. Personal data
includes information such as an employee’s
name, email address or ID number. Sensitive
data could be an employee’s racial origin,
political opinion, or religious belief, for example.
It will come into force in May 2018 and will give
citizens of EU countries greater rights over their
personal information, and place greater
obligations on organisations to protect this data
that they hold. It includes the right to be
forgotten, the right to know when personal data
falls into the wrong hands (e.g. hackers) and the
need for explicit consent (in certain cases) prior
to processing personal information.
There has been much written about GDPR, but
here is some basic guidance:
The new data-protection regulation — like the
current Data Protection Directive — affects all
industries and organisations that process
personal data. It’s also applicable to both public
and private sectors.
In the event of a compliance breach, supervisory
authorities can impose fines of up to four per
cent of an organisation’s worldwide annual
turnover, or €20 million — whichever is higher.
Organisations have to notify their supervisory
authority within 72 hours of any data breach,
and they may also have to notify their customers.
Organisations with more than 250 employees, or
whose core operations employ systematic data
monitoring, have to designate a Data Protection
Officer. This person reports directly to
management, but also requires a guarantee of
independence to have the confidence to
highlight any issues.
Individuals will legally be allowed to view any of
the personal data that an organisation stores on
them in entirety, as well as making it clear on the
levels of profiling or direct marketing they will
permit. Individuals can also request deletion of
all data contained upon them, with organisation
procedures and processes altered to ensure this
is adhered to post-GDPR enforcement.
As per existing regulations, organisations have to
ensure they have technical and organisational
security controls in place to guarantee the safety
of any data they process.
Organisations must look at their entire security
landscape, because it underpins their efforts to
understand and protect their data, and to
comply with various legal, regulatory and
industry requirements. Without a successful
security strategy in place, organisations will
suffer the financial, regulatory and reputational
consequences that follow a serious data-security
breach.
Consent is a major topic for GDPR - ensure that
your policies are in full compliance with new
GDPR laws on granting clear consent for
individuals to access their data. The “opt-in” or
“opt-out” of marketing debate is set to continue
when the GDPR comes into force. Most Data
Protection authorities and privacy activists want
“opt-in”; most controllers are very content with
“opt-out”. Added to this divergence of views, the
GDPR states in Recital 47 that direct marketing
can be possible under the “legitimate interest”
criteria whilst Recital 32 states that “pre-ticked
boxes” cannot constitute data subject consent.
The implementation of GDPR is a very wide
ranging topic and as such, every company
should undertake their due diligence to ensure
they comply with the legal requirements. SDEA
associate company Citation have created a
guide to GDPR available online via:
http://bit.ly/2jf4UJ0 or by calling 0345 234
0404.
