Some say the idea of eating black eyed peas on New Year's started at the time of the Civil War. Peas were considered animal food and not fit for Union soldiers. That meant peas were the only food that was left for the Confederate forces and families to eat. These Southerners considered themselves lucky to have a meal of peas and salt pork in the dead of winter. Other sources trace the eating of peas back to the Egyptians. At the time of the Pharaohs it was considered a sign of humility before the gods to eat such a lowly food. What about Cabbage? Most people will tell you they eat cabbage or collard greens to insure prosperity. The green leaves represent money. The real truth is closer to this. Cabbage and collard greens are late crops. That means, especially in the south, they would be plentiful and ready for harvest in early January. Fresh veggies meant good nutrition. The ancient Egyptians, the Greeks, and the Romans ate cabbage. They ate it to ward off disease and aid digestion. Stir in onion and garlic; cook until onion is transparent, about 5 minutes. Stir in water, bouillon, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then stir in cabbage. Simmer until cabbage wilts, about 10 minutes. Stir in tomatoes. Return to a boil, then simmer 15 to 30 minutes, stirring often.

I was going to talk about choosing a Venue but decided to talk about choosing your Wedding Party. When looking at Venues, your wedding party can be a big help! Choosing your party can be a very difficult decision to make. Should I choose friends, family or a mixture of both? Whose feelings am I going to hurt? The last thing you want to do is hurt someone's feelings, however this isn't about others, this is your day. Those that truly care about you will understand how important this decision is to make. The wedding party usually consist of a Matron or Maid of Honor, she is the person that helps the bride. It's the maid/ matron of honor's (MOH) job to direct the other maids through their duties. Make sure everyone gets their bridesmaid dresses, go to dress fittings, and find the right jewelry. Some brides choose several brides maids, which can be very helpful. Here is a list of delegations for the bridesmaids. - Helps the bride with the planning of the wedding. - they help the bride with errands on the wedding day. - Helps decorate ceremony if necessary. - They help with organizing or assisting with hair and make-up. - Helps with or the making of table decorations and or wedding crafts. - Helps with arranging wedding favors. - Helpts maid or matron of honor with Bachelorette party and bridal shower. - Bridesmaids usually pay for their own gown and accessories. - Attend ceremony rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. The Groom will have to choose his Best Man and Groomsmen. The Best Man has responsibilities too. Here is a list of delegations for the Best Man and Groomsmen. - Assists with the tuxedos. - Organizes the Groomsmen's fittings. - Plans the Bachelor's Party. - Help the Groom get dressed. - Give a toast to the Couple. - Groomsmen and Best Man usually pay for their own tuxedo. - Attends ceremony rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. Choosing a flower girl and ring bearer is all that is left. It is important for the children to be age appropriate for them to follow directions; usually ages 4-8. Making this decision is no easy task however the sooner the better, this allows everyone time to buy what they need. Happy Planning!! Angela H.
