Sumner strikes gold SPORTS
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
THREE NATIONAL records
were set by Sumner surf
lifesavers at the national pool
championships in Auckland.
Sumner Surf Lifesaving Club
sent 12 athletes to the competition,
which was held at the AUT
Millenium’s Sir Owen G. Glenn
National Aquatic Centre over
three days of competition in a
range of activities.
About 600 athletes from
New Zealand, and 10 from
New South Wales in Australia,
competed over the course of the
three days.
Sumner won 13 medals,
including six golds, and earned
a total of 36 points which
put them in eighth place
overall.
Sumner club captain Henry
Lawson said for some of the
athletes to return as national
record holders is a great achievement.
“The club is stoked with how
the competition went, we
had some really outstanding
results. We didn’t expect that
level of success at all, that was
definitely a little bit of a surprise,”
he said.
The competition was won by
the Mt Maunganui Lifeguard
Service with 162 points - more
than 50 ahead of second placed
Orewa.
The three national record
holders for Sumner were Cassie
Wright, who beat the women’s
under 19 swim with fins 50m
event record; Matthew Phillips
beat the men’s open swim with
fins 50m event record; and the
combined efforts of Brittany
Tucker, Wright, Olivia Mason,
and Courtney Quinn now hold
the record for the women’s open
4 x 25m manikin relay.
In Brief
YACHTING AWARD
Mt Pleasant Yacht Club’s Keith
Hays has been named one of this
year’s Volvo Excellence Service
Award winners. Mr Hays’ dedication
to junior sailors at the club in
the aftermath of the earthquakes
was recognised by Yachting New
Zealand recently. He has been
involved with the club since the
1980s. The awards evening will be
held in Auckland next month.
CRICKET COLLAPSE
Sumner Cricket Club’s senior side
collapsed on the final day of their
two-day match against Merivale-
Papanui on Saturday. Sumner
resumed the second day in a strong
position having taken a first innings
lead of 50 and, after a strong
bowling attack, left themselves with
103 runs to chase. Sumner managed
to reach 97/7 before losing all
three remaining wickets without
scoring again. The team will next
take on Heathcote at St Leonards
Square.
RUNNING SUCCESS
Sumner Running Club has tasted
success in two recent races. In the
36km Abel Tasman Classic, David
Fitch placed second overall with a
time of 2hr 37min 45secs. In the Mt
Cook half marathon on Saturday,
club member Danny Carmine took
home second place.
ALERT TO CHRISTCHURCH
HOMEOWNERS:
EQC is now asking homeowners
to assess own damage.
"Remedial works letters"
sent to those who've
complained about repair
work carried out by Fletchers
EQR
Ask yourself: Why after 6 years
does EQC give you just 30 days to
assess your own damage? We say
it's to reduce EQC's liabilities through
homeowners not really knowing full
quake or repair damage.
• Do you know anything about
foundation damage to your home?
• Can you determine any damage to
your slab under carpets?
• Or if your piles need replacing?
Do you know if your ring foundation
is cracked on the inside?
