From Treviso to Sumner SPORTS

A PROFESSIONAL rugby coach
who formerly plied his trade in
Italy will look to turn Sumner
into a “champion” club.

Treviso, a Pro12
competition side,
where over that
time he was the
club’s academy
manager, skills
and performance coach, and assistant
coach.
Pro12 is a European competition,
contested by the top Italian,
Irish, Welsh and Scottish teams.
In previous years, All Blacks
such as John Kirwan and Craig
Green have played for the club.
Prior to his work in Italy, Field-
Dodgson worked for Queensland
Rugby Union and coached the
Brothers club in Brisbane, where
in 2005, the club won a national
title.
He made the move back to
Christchurch after a conversation
with now Crusaders and
Canterbury coach Scott Robertson,
who suggested he should
lead the seaside suburb.
“I’m originally from Christchurch,
in the Cashmere hills area.
I went to secondary school here
but with the old man’s job we
moved around a bit, but I always
considered here home. I enjoyed
the beach and that kind of thing.
“I’d been in touch [with Robertson]
for a while, he said after
looking at my CV ‘you’ve done a
lot of assistant coaching, but you
need to run your own ship, get
involved in club rugby’,” Field-
Dodgson said.
When he touched down in
the city, Robertson took him
to a Sumner team training and
watched videos of previous
matches.
“. . . there are lots of good individuals
involved with the club,
but I saw some small things that
I could change that would have a
good effect,” he said.
After only a few weeks in
charge, the new coach has selfproclaimed
“lofty” ideas and
goals for the club.
“[My goal is] without getting
too specific, to turn Sumner into
a champion club. That might not
mean we end up lifting the trophy
at the end of the season, but
everything we do as a club we do
as if we are the champions. That
means champion training sessions,
and getting that mentality
into every single drill,” he said.
