New portraits
of a bygone era
Governors Bay Hotel owners Jeremy
and Clare Dyer have been depicted
as the founding father of Canterbury
John Robert Godley and his wife
Charlotte Godley as a part of Julia
Holden’s Lyttelton Redux exhibition.
Twenty-three well-known Lyttelton
Stable power supply pledged
• By Tom Doudney
ORION HAS promised Lyttelton
residents a more resilient power
supply by 2019, following a
recent outage which left 1600
homes without electricity for
about 13 hours.
The town and surrounding
bays are vulnerable to outages as
power is supplied via two lines
that sit on the same set of poles
running over the Port Hills
where they are exposed to the
elements.
If one line fails it can cause the
other to fail due to their proximity.
This is what happened on
November 5, with an outage
affecting Lyttelton, Corsair Bay,
Cass Bay, Rapaki, Governors Bay
and Pigeon Bay and Rapaki.
In a statement released following
that outage, Orion said
it had a plan to restore network
resilience and reliability to the
city, following the earthquakes,
by 2019. Improving the surety of
power supply in Lyttelton was a
priority it said.
“We appreciate Lyttelton has
suffered a number of outages in
recent years and we understand
the frustration that this has
caused for residents and the
business community,” the statement
said.
Orion has been in talks with
the NZ Transport Agency over a
$1.5m project to improve power
supply to the Lyttelton area by
installing a new and separate cable
running via the road tunnel.
Any agreement reached on a
tunnel route will take about 24
months to implement.
Orion’s statement said
that while these discussions
continued, it was focusing on
improving the reliability of the
two existing overhead lines that
serviced the area. Further work
on this would be undertaken in
early next year.
Lyttelton Coffee Culture owner
Leona Cooper said Orion’s plans
would be good for the town.
“I think they need to improve
the power here,” she said.
The November 5 power outage
had meant they weren’t able to
serve coffee until 11.30am on
that day.
The Banks Peninsula Community
Board received a briefing on
the work in August and board
chairwoman Christine Wilson
said she would be meeting with
Orion again to discuss the situation
following the recent outage.
“I personally felt quite excited
by the briefing we had earlier on
in the year and the work that is
taking place,” she said.
LIKE SO many of you, I was
perched up on the hills after being
evacuated due to the tsunami risk
on Monday morning.
Again, like the previous earthquakes,
I am always taken by the
wonderful folk we have in this city.
While I was perched up the top of
Egnot Heights in Redcliffs, the lads
in my car decided they would have
a nap, but I decided to have a wander
around. I found Nicki of North
New Brighton, who unknowingly
soothed me with her banter and
beaut two-year-old dog.
Then, Nicki and I found ourselves
invited into a stranger’s
home, who brewed us a cup of
dearly needed caffeine. In their
house were other refugees. The
family was so welcoming, so a big
thank you to them.
The earthquakes continue to
shake us, but they do not shake our
marvellous Christchurch spirit.
Chaos
by Patricia Cornwell
Fear is a force of nature. No. 1 New York Times bestselling author
Patricia Cornwell delivers the twenty-fourth engrossing thriller
in her high-stakes series starring medical examiner Dr. Kay
Scarpetta. In the quiet of twilight, on an early autumn day,
twenty-six-year-old Elisa Vandersteel is killed while riding her
bicycle along the Charles River. It appears she was struck by
lightning - except the weather is perfectly clear with not a cloud
in sight. Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the Cambridge Forensic Center’s
director and chief, decides at the scene that this is no accidental
Act of God. Her investigation becomes complicated when she begins
receiving a flurry of bizarre poems from an anonymous cyberbully who
calls himself Tailend Charlie. Though subsequent lab results support Scarpetta’s
conclusions, the threatening messages don’t stop. When the tenth poem arrives
exactly twenty-four hours after Elisa’s death, Scarpetta begins to suspect the harasser
is involved, and sounds the alarm to her investigative partner, Pete Marino, and her
husband, FBI analyst Benton Wesley. She also enlists the help of her niece, Lucy. But
to Scarpetta’s surprise, tracking the slippery Tailend Charlie is nearly impossible, even
for someone as brilliant as her niece. Also, Lucy can’t explain how this anonymous
nemesis could have access to private information. To make matters worse, a
venomous media is whipping the public into a frenzy, questioning the seasoned
forensics chief’s judgment and “a quack cause of death on a par with spontaneous
combustion”
Delay in kindergarten decision
• By Annabelle Dick
HEARING DELAYS mean that
Mt Pleasant residents will have
to wait a bit longer to see if a
kindergarten will be built on a
contentious McCormacks Bay
Rd site.
An outcome was expected
on November 5 after a resource
consent hearing finished on
October 18, but commissioner
Justine Ashley wanted more
information on the landscaping
plan.
The hearing could not be
closed so the decision date has
been pushed back
to Friday.
Kidsfirst wants
to build a 248 sq
m kindergarten,
which is bigger
than their former
centre damaged
in the 2011 earthquake.
The childhood centre is
planned to be 30m west of the
former kindergarten and homeowners
are angry it will block
their view of the estuary.
The organisation applied to
the city council for resource
consent to build and operate a
centre in June but were declined
due to a city council mistake.
Nearby property owner
Margaret Evrard was meant to
UP IN THE AIR: Kidsfirst is still waiting to hear if they can establish a kindergarten on the
reserve on McCormacks Bay Rd.
notified about the application
but she wasn’t initially seen as a
property affected by the centre,
so Kidsfirst had to resubmit its
application.
When asked what the landscaping
plan amendments were
and if the setbacks have been
frustrating, Kidsfirst chief executive
Sherryll Wilson wouldn’t
comment.
“It would be inappropriate
for Kidsfirst to comment while
the resource consent process is
under way,” she said.
She said after the hearing
concluded it would make a
public statement.
The proposed centre will
run longer from 8am to 5pm
with an estimated 200 vehicles
expected to move in and out of
McCormacks Bay Rd.
Residents said the narrow
strip is a dangerous place for a
kindergarten as busy thoroughfare
Main Rd is only metres
away and McCormacks Bay Rd
has a blind corner.
“While the community centre
was being rebuilt there was
three accidents – one of them
had their door cleaned right off
its hinges,” Mr Graham Keats
said.
“It’s really bad from a safety
aspect as kids are going to be
loaded and unloaded during the
peak times for traffic.”
In Brief
QUAKE REPAIRS
Work is being done to repair
earthquake-damaged infrastructure
in Mt Pleasant, Redcliffs and
Heathcote Valley. Contractor
Downer started work on Monday to
fix roads, stormwater and wastewater
systems and the damaged pump
station on Port Hills Rd. A new
concrete wall will be constructed to
surround the existing pump station
and the repairs will take about two
weeks to complete. The walking
track between Flinders Rd and Port
Hills Rd will stay open during repair
work.
DEFIBRILLATOR FOR CLUB
The Redcliffs Mt Pleasant Bowling
Club has installed a defibrillator at
its clubrooms for the community
to access. It was funded through
a $3500 grant from the Westpac
Air Rescue Trust, and will be
stored on the wall of the verandah
at the clubrooms on 9 James
St, Redcliffs. A number of club
members have received training
from St John on how to use the
system. A defibrillator is used to
help treat people suffering from lifethreatening
heart problems.
HERITAGE GRANT
The city council will meet tomorrow
to decide if it will approve a $127,415
Pedestrian
crossing
confirmed
• By Annabelle Dick
A PEDESTRIAN crossing is
expected to be put in place on
Norwich Quay by Christmas.
The New Zealand Transport
Agency confirmed it would create
a crossing after a city council
panel approved the installation
of a bus shelter on Norwich
Quay in September.
NZTA has indicated that the
kerb, bus shelter and signals are
expected to be installed before
Christmas but full commissioning
of the signalised pedestrian
crossing may not occur until
February/March.
The bus stop and shelter will
be installed adjacent to 25 Norwich
Quay and will replace the
existing bus stop on Norwich
Quay opposite Dublin St.
“Work on the shelter itself
has begun off site, and it will be
transported to the site and lifted
in once new kerbs and footpaths
are ready,” city council team
leader traffic operations Ryan
Rolston said.
It will cost about $9000 to
build and install the shelter and
is intended to meet the demands
of the growing number of bus
users.
READY TO RELOCATE: Lyttelton chief fire officer Mark Buckley is excited to move into the new fire station on London St.
New fire station takes shape
• By Annabelle Dick
IT’S BEEN more than half a
decade since the Lyttelton’s
volunteer fire fighters have had
a permanent home but that will
soon change.
The brigade has begun the
shift into its new London St
station with an official opening
scheduled for early next year.
“We’ve already had two moves
since the earthquake and we
have settled into our present
location but now the guys have
had a look through the new
station, they’re getting a bit
excited,” chief fire officer Mark
Buckley said.
The brigade’s station was
badly damaged in the February
2011 earthquake and was later
demolished.
Immediately after the quake,
Mr Buckley and deputy chief
fire officer Dwayne Pool sent
their families away and worked
from the damaged station to
FACILITY:
Preparations
are being made
to move the
fire station from
its temporary
site in Norwich
Quay.
help support Lyttelton residents
through the turmoil.
They’ve been operating out of
temporary bases since.
The brigade moved to the port
company’s car park following
the quakes, before moving back
into temporary premises on
London St, and then into its current
site on Norwich Quay.
“Lyttelton, like other brigades
in the region, showed its dedication
to its community in the
aftermath of the Canterbury
earthquakes,” New Zealand Fire
Service region manager Steve
Turek said.
“Like many brigades in this
area, Lyttelton was virtually cut
off following the earthquake and
the brigade provided a lifeline
and emergency support for its
community.”
The new station is a part of a
$50 million investment by the
New Zealand Fire Service to
rebuild Christchurch facilities.
New life for harbour icon
• By Annabelle Dick
THE NAUTILUS was once a
long-time resident of Lyttelton
Harbour and now it has been
celebrated as a piece of maritime
history.
The World War 1 vessel was
relaunched last month in Auckland,
five years after it was gifted
to the New Zealand Maritime
Museum.
It belonged to retired Mt Pleasant
businessman Allan Williams,
who bought it in 1994 and
berthed it in Lyttelton Harbour.
“When I bought it, it was dilapidated.
It was covered in bird
droppings and it was unloved
and unwanted,” he said.
The Nautilus was used during
New Zealand’s Gallipoli campaign
in 1915.
The 103-year-old boat towed
injured soldiers off the hospital
ship Marama to hospitals in
Alexandria, Egypt.
It also did service in the
English Channel and returned
to Christchurch after the war to
work in the Avon River and Lyttelton
Harbour.
“Apart from its history in
the war, it’s had a lot to do
with Lyttelton. It was a part of
Lyttelton scenery for years,” Mr
Williams said.
He is a keen boatie and
snapped up the opportunity to
buy the vessel two decades ago.
He has invested big money
and man hours into restoring
the historic launch over the
years, cementing its place in the
harbour.
“Anyone involved in boating
in this area would know about
it,” he said.
In 2011, Mr Williams gifted
the Nautilus to the New Zealand
Maritime Museum so its history
could be preserved.
“It’s a priceless little boat and
I wanted to make sure it was
looked after. She’s a part of national
history,” he said.
The museum’s ‘Wednesday
old boys’ staff put 46,000 hours
of volunteer work and $200,000
into restoring the run-down
Nautilus.
“It’ll go another 100 years.”
It’s the newest member of the
museum and was re-launched
last month at the Royal New
Zealand Navy’s 75th anniversary.
It will be open for public
sailings from November 20.
Call to improve
evacuation process
• By Annabelle Dick
REFUGEES FROM suburbs
across the city, sought shelter
at Mt Pleasant school after
Monday morning’s tsunami
evacuation.
The school was opened by
the community response team
after tsunami sirens warned
people to move to higher ground
at 2am.
About 200 people from
Woolston, Southshore, New
Brighton, Brookhaven, Bromley
sought shelter at the school until
it was safe to go home.
Residents were evacuated
after the 7.5 magnitude earthquake,
centred in Waiau that
struck at 12.02am. Police went
street by street in vehicles
checking to ensure people had
evacuated.
About 20,000 residents live in
the evacuation area from Ferrymead
to Taylor’s Mistake, said
the city council yesterday.
Residents in Redcliffs and
Sumner also pulled together
after fleeing to the hills.
Many coastline residents spent
the morning in cars on the hills
surrounding Sumner, Redcliffs
and Moncks Bay with the all
clear finally given around 9am
that morning.
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board member
Darrell Latham said a lot of
Sumner residents stayed at home
after the shake because
no tsunami warning was put
out.
There was conflicting information
from the Ministry of Civil
Defence and Emergency Management
who said people should
go inland or seek refuge on hills,
while the city council said no
evacuations were required.
This changed at 2am when the
tsunami sirens sounded.
He’s written to Mayor Lianne
Dalziel on behalf of the board
and the Sumner Community
Residents Association to fix
processes before the next quake.
“This caused confusion
for residents. While the
ultimate responsibility rests
on individual residents to self
evacuate it was not in any way
helped by the obvious confusion
and mixed messages received,”
he said.
“A delay activating the tsunami
warning siren could have
been life threatening. We can do
better than this.”
Artist turns Lyttelton residents into
‘THE GOVERNOR’:
exhibition.
WELL-KNOWN residents,
including singer-songwriter
Marlon Williams, have been
transformed into early settlers
as part of the Lyttelton Redux
exhibition.
Lyttelton artist Julia Holden
painted 23 residents, including
Williams, Sergeant Dave
Knowles and former community
board chairwoman Paula Smith,
turning them into early Lyttelton
settlers.
“Using non-toxic, acrylic
house paints, I painted directly
onto the person using them
as the canvas and then photographed
the result bringing the
past into the present in a new,
contemporary portrait,” Ms
Holden said.
Clare and Jeremy Dyer, who
own Governors Bay Hotel, and
son Louis Dyer, who owns Civil
& Naval, all participated.
The Dyer family was one of the
first to arrive by ship in Lyttelton
Harbour and it’s believed Dyers
Pass Rd was also named after
them.
The couple were chosen to depict
‘The Governor: John Robert
Godley’ and ‘The Governor’s
Wife: Charlotte Godley.’
“The great reveal was the exhibition.
Seeing it up front . . . it’s
an amazing body of work. I was
pretty blown away, it was pretty
cool,” Mr Dyer said.
His son Louis Dyer was
painted as ‘The Colonist: Edward
Gibbon Wakefield.’
‘The Governor’ and ‘The Governor’s
Wife’ sit at Civil & Naval
and The Colonist is based in The
British Hotel.
‘It’s a nice context for us being
in our son’s bar,” Mr Dyer said.
The works are based on original
portraits of historic residents.
The portraits are spread
around different Lyttelton locations
for residents to visit.
All of the portraits are for sale
and limited edition prints are
also being sold.
The proceeds will go to the
Lyttelton Museum.
Lyttelton teen named dux,
earns varsity scholarships
• By Annabelle Dick
A LYTTELTON teenager has
been given a head start to a
science career after taking
away top honours at Linwood
College’s end of year awards.
Ruby Kerr, 18, was awarded
the top prize of dux, as well as
the Linwood College Literary
Cup and Victoria University
achiever’s scholarship at the
prize-giving last month.
Ruby was blown away to
hear she’d received the accolades,
which will pay for part
of her university tuition.
“It was very overwhelming.
I didn’t expect it. I’ve come
from a small school and never
thought I was very smart so
getting those awards was a
huge achievement,” she said.
The year 13 student attended
Lyttelton’s St Joseph’s School
until she was 11-years-old.
Ruby then moved to Lyttelton
Main School because St
Joseph’s closed due to its small
roll of 20 pupils.
“It was so small that we only
had two classrooms, so when
I moved to Lyttelton Main, I
was behind everybody else. I
had no idea what I was doing
and I used to get so stressed
out about school work that I
used to cry,” she said.
“So getting the dux award
ACHIEVER: Ruby Kerr received two scholarships that will
cover some of her tertiary study costs.
and my other awards was a big
deal to me because it showed
me I could do it and achieve
anything.”
As the daughter of an acupuncturist,
Ruby has always
been deeply interested in the
sciences.
While studying biology,
chemistry and physics at
Linwood College, she realised
how much she loved biology.
At the same time, she
became passionate about environmental
issues and wants to
combine those interests into a
career.
“It’s being able to know how
everything works. With science
you can figure out things
and you gain a bigger understanding
of the world around
you,” she said.
Ruby plans on studying a
Bachelor of Science with a
double major in environmental
studies and biology at Victoria
University of Wellington
next year. The achiever’s
scholarship will cover her first
year of tertiary study there.
She’s also considering Canterbury
University, as the dux
award comes with a scholarship
of a paid year of study at
a South Island university and
living costs. Ruby has several
more external exams to go before
graduating from Linwood
College later this year.
Mental health support needed
Green MP
Eugenie
Sage talks
about
Monday
morning’s
earthquakes
and where
to seek help
if you’re
feeling
stressed.
Well that was an unpleasant
start to the week. Big hugs to
everyone in Kaikoura, Marlborough,
North Canterbury and
Wellington, living through aftershocks,
dealing with damage and
loss, and grappling with how to
repair hearts, homes, businesses,
and infrastructure.
Well done to folk who helped
support Christchurch residents
who had to leave home as a result
of the tsunami warnings.
I’m writing this on Monday
morning with little information
on the full extent of damage
further north. Here in Christchurch,
people’s emotional and
psychological wellbeing has
probably taken a bigger hit from
the long, rolling earthquake
than buildings, roads and other
infrastructure.
Wherever you are – kindness
is contagious. Reaching out to
friends, family and neighbours
for a cup of tea or coffee, contact
and conversation can help reduce
post-quake stress. So can sticking
to daily and weekly routines
and staying active – taking a
walk, enjoying nature.
The All Right? health promotion
campaign and the Mental
Health Foundation’s five ways
to wellbeing are good sources of
practical advice on how to stay
well.
But for some that won’t be
enough. There has been a major
increase in demand for mental
health services in Christchurch
after the 2011 quakes, especially
among young people. They seek
help for a range of issues, including
severe depression, anxiety,
self-harm and suicidal thoughts.
New figures show that young
people are facing unreasonably
long waiting times to receive
follow-up appointments after
seeking help. In the last year, up
to 3297 young people around
New Zealand had to wait longer
than eight weeks to have a
second face-to-face appointment
with a medical professional after
seeking help. Canterbury was
one of four areas with the longest
waiting times.
No one should not have to wait
weeks on end to get the medical
help they need. Our mental
health professionals do a fantastic
job but services are stretched
and struggling.
This is partly because Government
has cut the overall health
budget, scrapped the Mental
Health Commission and focused
resources on targets that don’t
include mental health.
We need better funding for
the Canterbury District Health
Board and community services.
And we need a nationwide inquiry
into mental health services
similar to the Mason Report in
the 90s, to ensure that New Zealanders
can access the support
they need.
Free help is available. Phone
Redcliffs School possibly
being located on a Maori
burial site at Redcliffs
Park.
Shanna Olsen-Reeder –
Who cares about property values?
I can’t believe that’s people’s
main concern rather than the
disrespectful act of building
over a cemetery.
Pamela Neil – I can not
believe all this carry on over
a school site. It will devalue
properties in the area if a school
is built on the park and if part of
it is a burial ground from many
years ago, Maori will take more
time to confirm this. Leave
the school where it is! Nearly
seven years have gone by and
a generation of children have
been deprived of attending the
school. Is there someone who
can make sensible and binding
decisions in Christchurch. I
am embarrassed to say I come
from this once beautiful city. It
is now a hotchpotch of cheaply
constructed, ugly housing and
bad town planning. Get on with
the rebuild before people die
waiting.
Trevor Walmsley – Loose
$300,000 to $400,000 in property
values – many people in
New Zealand can’t even afford
to own a house.
Karl Dean – People are so
selfish these days, honestly won’t
it increase your value being
within walking distance of the
school?
Market Comment with Craig Prier
October saw a slightly subdued market for us with sales numbers at lower levels than expected.
This seemed to be mirrored across other marketplaces around the country. Commentators
are suggesting it may be as a result of new LVR’s (loan value ratios) having an effect and the
number of loan pre-approvals slowing down. However, as always, good properties that are
well marketed still seem to attract the most interest. Time and again we see great results
being achieved for vendors who choose to make the effort of presenting their property and
investing in high profile marketing campaigns. Whether it is an auction or deadline sale the
general feeling among vendors is that marketing their property without a price avoids the risk
of underselling. Buyers are able to compete for the property either by bidding at auction or putting
their best offer forward in a deadline sale.
Brightening Christmas
with A Little Ray of Giving
At a time of year when the gift of giving is in the spotlight, the team
here at Ray White Ferrymead are doing our bit to help out families
who are in a less fortunate situation than others. It’s the second year
we are taking part in this national charity initiative ‘A Little Ray of
Giving’ and we’re aiming to making this year bigger and better than
last year!
“With the outstanding support from the beach, hill and harbour
suburbs last year our office collected the most gifts of any Ray White
office in New Zealand! This year we’re aiming to keep that top spot
and are once more calling on the local community to embrace the
giving season and dig deep for those who need it most” said Principal
Craig Prier.
To help spread the Christmas cheer, it’s as simple as bringing
something suitable for a child or teenager into the Ray White
Ferrymead office from 1-22 December, and stashing it under the
Christmas tree.
We will start collecting on Dec 1st through to Dec 22nd 2016.
BEACH EDUCATION: The Envirogroup lesson taught Sumner
Environment lesson for
pupils at Sumner Beach
SUMNER SCHOOL’S
Envirogroup pupils attended
a city council education
lesson to learn about Sumner
Beach’s sand dunes.
Dunes are created by the
sand that blows down the
beach from onshore winds.
Sand dunes protect from
the sand that comes flying
out of the beach and into the
streets, by catching it. Pupils
found out about why they
are important and how they
can be protected.
They learnt that sand
dunes are an important part
of the beach for people, native
trees, and the animals
that live in them.
Car parking restrictions likely
near popular Port Hills track
• By Bridget Rutherford and
Caitlin Miles
USING A popular Port Hills
track could become more
difficult with a plan to install no
stopping restrictions on nearby
streets.
The city council is looking to
install yellow no stopping lines
on most of Rapaki Rd and part
of Montgomery Tce.
Rapaki Rd is the main access
way to Rapaki Track, which is
popular with walkers, runners
and mountain-bikers, especially
on the weekends.
However, residents say
track users parking on the
road made it narrow and
dangerous.
Rapaki Rd resident Mike
Smith said that even with
the yellow lines across
from his house it can be hard
for him to get in and out of his
driveway with people parking
over the lines.
He said the proposed changes
are a good way to tackle the
problem.
“It can not be tolerated
because people will get hurt if
something doesn’t change,” Mr
Smith said.
Mr Smith said he is concerned
about emergency services being
able to get to the top of the track
to assist people.
As a result, the city council
has put the plan out for public
consultation to get feedback
before it approves the changes.
The restrictions would run
along the left side of the road
from Centaurus Rd to Montgomery
Tce, and on the right
hand side on the top stretch of
the road.
Montgomery Tce would also
have restrictions on the left
hand side of the road leading to
Erewhon Tce.
The city council hopes the
changes would improve
safety, make more room
for vehicles to manoeuvre,
and improve access
to properties.
Councillor Tim
Scandrett (left) said
he doesn’t know why
people who plan to
walk Rapaki Track park at the
very start of the track when they
could park elsewhere and get
more exercise.
“It seems insane that people
drive up there to walk and be
fit but they won’t park at the
bottom (of Rapaki Rd),” Cr
Scandrett said.
He said it is welcome news for
residents along the road.
Mr Smith said he hopes this
will make the improvements
that many residents have wanted
for a long time.
Sumner snatch Challenge
Trophy in tight contest
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
SUMNER’S OPENING batsman
Marcus Thompson was the
difference in the side’s Senior
A Challenge Trophy winning
match on Saturday.
The 45-over match between
Sumner and Lancaster Park Addington
went down to the final
over after Sumner lost the toss
and were sent in to bat.
Thompson scored 14 boundaries
in his 95 runs off 133 deliveries. His
opening partner Ethan Vickery
managed 23 off 24 deliveries before
being trapped lbw.
Thompson batted on at St
Leonards Square and led the side
to a total of 221/8, when at one
point they were struggling at
57/4.
Addington lost wickets
regularly during its run
chase through the bowling
of Dan Vann, who took three
wickets.
The standout batsman for
Addington was also an opener.
Stewart van Zenten kept the
scores close throughout the
second innings with his 105 from
115 deliveries.
It was only after van Zenten
brought up his century with a six
In the final over, Addington
and Sumner won the match by
three runs.
Thompson said Sumner had to
Experts restore that
“winning smile”
MEETING PEOPLE for the first time,
interacting with others on social occasions,
going for a job interview - in all these
situations your smile is the most important
part of you.
Or perhaps, on a lighter note, you
might be scaring yourself with your ‘selfie’
because your smile is not as attractive as it
should be, due to missing or broken teeth.
Perhaps it’s time for a visit to Denture
South in Barrington, where the experts can
give you that winning smile back.
Clinical dental technician, Andrew
Johnson and associate Janice ling can
provide you with a highly personalised
experience. We have a lot of knowledge
and experience that can help guide you
through the process.
For people who have had dentures for a
while and are finding they frequently need
to buy denture adhesive to keep them in
place, Andrew advises having the dentures
relined so they will fit better. As he points
out, the money spent on denture adhesive
over 12 months would easily cover the cost
of having your dentures refitted.
Denture South has been providing a full
range of denture services for the residents
of Christchurch for over 13 years. These
services include first-time immediate
dentures, full replacement dentures, partial
plates and sports mouth-guards.
Many Denture South clients come
through word-of-mouth referral, an
indication of the level of satisfaction that’s
provided there. Coming into Christmas
we will be open and available for all
adjustments for our existing patients in the
final week, making for a great Christmas.
PAGE 25
Sticks and stones will
break our bones but
names will never hurt us?
This has always been a common
saying that adults have offered to
children in situations where they have
received hurtful comments or been
called hurtful names. We all know the
concept behind such a saying, and if
a child is strong enough to hear this
and soldier on then good on them.
The reality though for most of us (not
just our children) is that words can
hurt (a lot).
Social communications have
developed significantly since I was
a child at school. Back then (which
was actually not too long ago) there
were no cell phones and there was
no internet . Communications were
face-to-face in the playground, over
the phone (which had a cord) in
the hallway before bedtime, written
on notes and passed around a
classroom, or by snail mail. Now,
our communication methods can be
summarised in two succinct words –
‘social media’.
As a result of the ever increasing
social media, and specifically
following the “roastbusters” scandal
in 2013, a new piece of legislation
was enacted in July 2015 - the
Harmful Digital Communications
Act 2015 (the Act). The Act aims to
provide victims of hurtful facebook
posts, text messages or other digital
communications quick and efficient
resolution or remedy. In addition it
creates new criminal offences.
Although some of the provisions of
the Act came into force in 2015, it
will not be until Monday 21 November
2016 that it will be fully operational.
Under the Act, a government
approved agency, Netsafe, will be the
organisation responsible for receiving
and investigating complaints brought
under the Act. Although Netsafe
will not have any real enforcement
powers, its purpose is of a civil nature
to investigate complaints and use
negotiation and mediation to try to
resolve the complaints efficiently.
Applications may also be made to
the District Court for orders such as
requiring the defendant to take down
the content or refrain from posting
content, making a correction or
providing an apology. Applications
can be made by an individual, a
parent or guardian of the individual,
the police and even the individual’s
school. Not complying with such an
order will constitute an offence.
The Court can also find a defendant
guilty of a criminal offence if their
online posting or texting:
1. was made with the intent to cause
harm, and
2. would cause harm to a reasonable
person in the same position as
their victim, and
3. harm was actually caused to the
victim.
The penalties for such a conviction
are up to two years in prison, or a fine
of up to $50,000 (for an individual).
The Act also sets out 10
‘Communication Principles’ which
both Netsafe and the District Court
are required to consider when
exercising their roles under the Act.
These Communication Principles are
fairly broad and provide that a digital
communication should not:
1. Disclose sensitive personal facts
about someone.
2. Be threatening, intimidating or
menacing.
3. Be grossly offensive to a
reasonable person in the position
of the individual affected.
4. Be indecent or obscene.
5. Be used to harass an individual.
6. Make a false allegation.
7. Contain a matter that is published
in breach of confidence.
8. Incite or encourage anyone to send
a message to an individual for the
purpose of causing harm to the
individual.
9. Incite or encourage an individual to
commit suicide.
10. Denigrate an individual by reason
of his or her colour, race, ethnic or
national origins, religion, gender,
sexual orientation, or disability.
There have already been a number of
convictions under the Act including
an 18 year old convicted of sending
Skype messages to his ex-girlfriend
threatening to send pictures of her
naked to her mother; and a 28 year
ADVERTORIAL
old was imprisoned for 11 months
after sending a disturbing video to
someone through Facebook.
My children are still young and not
yet subject to such harmful digital
communications (although of course
even now they object to my facebook
posts of them with half their meals on
their faces or running under a hose in
their undies). However, I know the day
will come when I need to tell them
that “sticks and stones will break
their bones but names will never hurt
them”. The thing is though, everyone
has a breaking point, and to have
the possibility of recourse through
Netsafe may be a very helpful avenue
for individuals, parents and schools.
It waits to be seen how many
complaints Netsafe receive going
forward and how efficient they are
in handling them, but providing this
avenue of redress is a positive move
forward. With more awareness too,
this Act will hopefully deter harmful
behaviour in the realm of social
media.
New Hope For Long Term
Back Pain Sufferers
After more than eight years in
New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups
have now gained a reputation
for success with long-term
sufferers of Back pain. Inversion
New Zealand was started
eight years ago by Dave and
Nancy Hare, Dave had
suffered over twenty years of
back pain from Degenerated
Discs and had basically given
up and decided to just live
with it. “To me surgery was
never an option” he said “as
long as I still could walk, there
was hope”.
Dave had tried everything;
every time he was overseas
he would search for anything
that could possibly help.
While on one of these
overseas trips eight years ago,
Dave discovered the Teeter
Hang-Ups. “The first time I
tried it, the pain disappeared
and I was completely pain
free for about 30 minutes,
nothing had done that” he
told me. Dave never believed
it would fix him, “as specialists
had told me it was irreversible,
I now knew I had a place
to go every time I wanted
some serious relief”.
To Dave’s surprise the more
he used the table the longer
the pain stayed away, until
after nearly three months he
was completely pain free, “I
couldn’t believe it’ he told me
“I had spent large amounts of
money on every form of treatment
available and here
was something I had never
heard of sorting it out for
me in a very short period of
time” It was then Dave
decided to introduce Teeter
into New Zealand and Inversion
NZ was born.
Over the years INZ have
helped thousands of people
get some serious relief and
have seen results in not only
backs, but necks, hips,
knees, posture, circulation,
increased height, blood
pressure and lots more.
“We have testimonials from
people with over fifty years
of back problems and even
have them in a number of
schools in New Zealand for
their special needs children”
he told me, “the blood to the
brain helps these kids and
the results are excellent”
What this means for the
aging population is that it
helps maintain the health of
the brain as we all get older.
Dave told me that he
realised that, had he not
tried the Teeter for himself
he would still be suffering, “I
would still be a miserable
grumpy bugger, living with
pain, that is why we do the
shows, people need to try it
for themselves” he told me
“most people actually get
off with the pain either gone
or considerably less” he said
“we let the tables do the
talking”
IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW
THE TEETER TABLE WORKS
Discs: It uses gravity to apply traction,
the traction gently opens the discs and as
they open up they create suction, this
suction draws fluid from the surrounding
tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating
them. This is the key! Discs do not have
their own blood supply, they rely on
transfer of fluid from the surrounding
tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated
and over the years as discs get thinner with
age, they lose the ability to take on fluid
(just like squeezing a sponge) and they
start to de-hydrate.
De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are
harder, more prone to injury, they interfere
with nerve roots creating pain and
ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration.
The Teeter Inversion table slowly
and gently brings the hydration back into
the discs, plumping them up. This brings
back lost height (most people will regain
around 2 CM of height), it separates the
nerve roots far more effectively and returns
quality of life
Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when
muscles are stressed they become tight
which restricts the flow of blood and lymph
through the muscles so toxins build up,
Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the
muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle
rocking motion that stimulates circulation
and encourages blood flow through the
muscles, which clears the lactic acid into
your lymph system where it stimulates
lymph flow and deals with it. Most people
with serious neck issues see a large
improvement after only one treatment.
5th & 6th November
10am to 4pm
Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been
Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young
Posture: Poor posture is one of the
major cases of pain and is a major contributor
to the deterioration of the body with
age. A difference in leg length causes most
of the hip and knee issues, as they continue
to place uneven loads on the joints;
similar to the wheels out of alignment on
your car.
Trying to correct posture is extremely
difficult due to muscle memory, as it
constantly pulls the muscles back to where
they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more
on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up
and eventually come back into alignment,
using the table daily, does not allow the
muscle memory to pull them back out of
alignment and slowly the muscles start to
lose their memory and go with the flow,
allowing the body to come back into
correct posture. Then using the table once a
day will ensure it is kept there.
This is pure logic, if a machine is out of
alignment it does not last long, the only
difference between the body and a
machine is that the body is constantly
repairing itself, however if the wear and
tear on the body is greater than the body’s
ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline.
The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its
decline and allows the body to repair itself,
resulting in a far healthier life.
If you are serious about investing in your
health and really sorting your issues out,
come see us at one of our local roadshows,
you have nothing to lose and chances are, a
lot to gain.
pleasantly surprised.
TESTIMONIAL
DEAR DAVE AND NANCY
In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for
many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and
was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of
$48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle
changes including changing my profession, which was not
practical as I own my own business.
At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration
on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me
the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious
relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told that the
relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table
regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time,
having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter.
Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is
as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am
still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and
most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the
purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest
investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and
costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has
brought my health back.
Thank you very much for the opportunity.
Very best regards
Here in New Zealand,
Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most
respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on
how humans experience pain and then
researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your
Back" and then spent a few years researching
neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote
"Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine",
both books are in most bookstores.
Dr Kanji discovered in his research that the disc
is the most likely source of low back pain and
Inversion showed the best results of all the trials
conducted. Three studies showed a 60%
reduction in pain and one showed a 75%
reduction in surgery for people with disc
prolapse.
Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter
Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has
Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in
Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has
had such success that he is now conducting the
largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy.
In his own words, "these things are gold and
inversion should be a first line treatment for low
back pain”.
