PAGE 10 BAY HARBOUR Wednesday February 1 2017 Your Local Views History provides strong future Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson talks about Lyttelton’s history How many times over the last six years have you heard someone (even yourself) ask – “What used to be there?” With the number of buildings that we have lost, I feel it’s really important to have easy and accessible information about what used to be in these now vacant or newly built on sites. And it’s the same with local identities – remembering them and their contribution is important too. It helps build a sense of place and community. I have seen so many visitors to Lyttelton look at the beautiful photos on London St, taken by Jae Renaut. Who would have imagined all those years ago when he took those photos that they would be some of the enduring images of buildings no longer there. Beautiful and significant buildings like the Harbour Light, the Salvation Army Barracks and the Lyttelton Council building. Likewise, it was really lovely to see the plaque unveiled to commemorate the 105 th anniversary of the founding of MEMORIES: Buildings such as the former Harbourlight Theatre and the Colletts Chemist site are of significant historical importance to Lyttelton. Colletts Chemist on the corner of London and Oxford Sts. The community board deserves our thanks for supporting this plaque and I certainly hope that it is the first of many to recognise other community leaders and contributors. Some of the plaques could be more beneficial if they had a story board with me, so that locals and visitors alike could read a bit of the history of the person or building. Perhaps other areas in the city could think about doing a similar project to Lyttelton? Very little of our history is accessible to the average visitor and I think that it would give us a positive point of difference to many other areas as we compete for the tourist visitors. As we head into election year, people will be considering whether they think New Zealand is heading in the right direction. To me the answer is a resounding yes. New Zealand tops the world rankings as the least corrupt country on earth, the most prosperous country and the easiest place to do business. The economy continues to grow, driving wage and job growth, and allowing us to lift the minimum wage ahead of inflation again. Tourism has grown by 8.4 per cent in Canterbury in the last year, and with the opening of major attractions such as the Christchurch Adventure Park, I expect that growth to increase. We have work under way on multiple cycleways throughout the Port Hills – in particular the Sumner to City cycleway will be enjoyed by commuters and recreational cyclists alike. But this year is not just about the election. There is plenty of work to do in the Port Hills. I will be continuing to monitor the situation with Redcliffs School, as the Ministry of Education works to get construction of the new school under way, and advocate to lower the speed in school zones. I have been involved with the Heathcote River, but there is more work to be done on this, and other environmental issues within the Port Hills. The issues caused by Christchurch City Council’s handling of Coastal Hazards have not gone away, and I will continue to advocate for an outcome that is satisfactory to coastal residents. We also need to keep working on bringing cruise ships back to Lyttelton. It is really important that we take a regional approach to this issue, acknowledging not just the benefits to the Port Company and to Lyttelton, but to all of Christchurch. And as always, I am available to help with constituent issues and concerns, whether it be dealing with Government departments, EQC issues, or hearing your ideas on how we can make our communities even better.
